So today I was doing deadlifts and i was working my way up in weight and on one of the sets (that was not anywhere near max) as I began to pull it off the floor i heard/felt a pop in my lower back. I immediatly dropped the weight and was on the floor. I took a couple of aleve and let the water run on my back in the shower. Anyways its been a couple of hours and its bearable when i am standing or walking but if i sit down the pain is terrible. I don't have any pins and needles or pain down my legs so I don't think I slipped a disk.
Anyone have any suggestions for dealing with this?

can't diagnose you without you letting us know what the amount of weight you were deadlifting first

Its just a Muscle Strain. Take a Tennis ball and put it on the ground. Then position yourself on the floor with the spot on your back right on the Tennis Ball and roll on it pretty vigorously for about 15 minutes or any time. You probably will feel your lymph nodes swell up a bit. It will take you probably about 2-4 weeks to recover totally, but you will be as good as new.

I did this once during deadlifts and had to lie down in the gym before I could finally get up and hobble out.
I went to the doc and he said I'd be better in a week. The pain I was in, I didn't believe him. But he was right!

I did the same thing about 13 years ago. Kept pushing and pushing and finally heard the pop and could barely walk out. I didn't rupture the disc but at least once a year it will swell and put me just about completely out of commission.

Itīs acute lumbago, probably the quadratus lumborum. Forget about heavy lifting for a while, do not try to `train around it` to soon. Taking antiinflammatories is a good idea, but be carefull with `a few aleves`, itīs bad to take more than the max. dosage. Some antispasmolytics like valium can be good as well. Itīs better to stay moving with painkillers than to stay immobile without them.
Heat-cold showers may feel good but wonīt do anything to speed up the healing. Massage wonīt help either, shitting around with tennisballs is oke if you want to look like an idiot, but are useless too.

Stretch,stretch,stretch.. ! Don't sit there and let it get soar.. I had my kids walk on my back and pull my arms back,stretching me .. Then lie on your back,raise your legs,and then fall to the side,while your shoulders are flat on the ground.. It'll hurt for a few days,but it'll start to loosen up..

Simliar thing happened to my dad when he was lifting a stone - loud noise and pain.
Took a good 2 months to heal.

Ice, anti-imflammatories, stim. Go see doc. From DL, possible SI strain but since you heard and felt a "pop" who knows. If you feel it low on either side of your lumbar going up the side check for QL strain. Either way you're not dead lifting for awhile.

BTW, TA suggested a tennis ball, for this type of injury its too soon for trigger point (we do a ton of trigger point therapy) if anything start with a foam roller (black one) and even that maybe too much right now.

Is that what its called? I had a bit of a pull about 2 months ago doing bent over rows. The interesting thing was I was going VERY LIGHT and focus on squeezing the muscle deep with a deep arch in the back. Usually I try to go as heavy as I possibly can with form being a bit looser as the weight increases.
The Perfect Form, Arch in the back and the light weight did me in, but the Heavy Weight never has? ???
I immediately did the Tennis Ball thing and did it for a few days until I felt the knots break up. 2 weeks later or so and it was finally done. Too soon for that you say?

I had the same thing once or twice.
Good to hear from the other responses in this thread it doesn't seem like it's anything too serious. I always imagine I ruined a nerve or something which led to less muscle activation. Hopefully just my imagination.

Stay away from the gym, when you can start to stretch, don't take any days off from stretching, and start to put moderate strain on your back by doing things such as cardio on the stationary bike. This is how I am rehabing my back.

you can do dead lifts from morning to night and only thin you will get is injuries and strong bones,, look at matt c for god sake lol it is straight out walking joke ,, matt c development is a walking joke and he does so much heavy dead lift...
i ask you here to evaluate what you do ,, you want to be bodybuild? or you want to do balonie for the whores to look at you and then out their arms on your gut when they take pictures with you,,
we dont play with those balonie exercises you do ,, we may do it for camera once in a while but we dont develop ourself with that ,, we work around it ,, we are dragged and letargic who the fuck will do dead lifts when drug and letargic ,, we work smart and heavy but more importantly SMART!

lately ive been focusing on pulldowns with very strict form and light weight, squeezing the muscle. but the past couple workouts ive felt like i can get a better contraction by leaning back slightly as opposed to staying verticle. thoughts?

I believe Deadlifts are one of the best exercises if you are a Lifetime Natural.

Destroyed back!? Been there. Done that.
First week:
1) Ibuprofen. As much as needed.
2) Stay as active as possible. Your back will rehab/respond better and faster to low-level stimulation than immobilization. Do what you can.

And btw I feel for you man, this whole time I've been posting every day on getbig, it's cuz I hurt my back and can't work, you can see a doctor, but what are they gonna do? What is there to do for disk problems? Pretty much nothing. The worst thing you can do is lay around because that will atrophy your back muscles, you gotta not do anything gym related and then when you can start to stretch every day, that's how you exercise a muscle after the injury threshold has been lowered, stretch stretch stretch

I have to agree with Dr Chimps once again unless something is broken. If I knew ya and if you rusted me, I'd take you out a mile or so and throw you overboard and make you swim to shore.
The fear and the long distance swim seems to be a great remedy for friends who suffer serious back problems. ANd I do mean "serious".
But if you can't swim, you're up Shit Creek.

A similar thing happened to me recently while deadlifting 135 (shut up). It went away completely after like week or two tops. Is the pain off to one side or in the middle?

yeah sounds a bit like a back spasm, I've had them a couple of times, they take a few days to a week to subside and you have to keep moving to loosen the muscles up - you should see a doctor to confirm - he may also give you pain meds and something to relax the muscles at night

Deadlifts may be one of the greatest exercises for putting on muscle mass (as they utilize nearly every muscle in your body at some point during the lift) ~ but, I don't care how perfect and "tight" your form is, they will eventually wreak havoc on your lower lumbar spine.
There is no getting around it.

t bar ,, hammers,, pull downs and chin ups ,, good mornings ,, many great back exercises,, dead lift is good too its just not something that you care much for as bodybuild,,you do it yes mainly at the beggining of your bodybuild,,
generaly speaking a lower back wil develop and show detail when water is minimal... ofcourse you can develop those muscle but lower and middle back is a mater of hormones and sheding the water,, some genetically are fucked but still can get lowerr and middle back to be hard and dry ,, youll be surprized how much 10lb of water can change when it comes to middle back and lower back detail ,, it is night and day ,,
today fellas with insulina at high dose just dont have much lower back and middle back ,, the less insulina you use the better detailed lower back and middle back will be ,, and when i say detailed i mean fibericious,, dry ,, because detail can come out when you are sub 6 % even when you are on lots of insulina ,, it is the condition of the detailed musscle im talking about,,insulina at high doses ruin it

I never hurt my lower back with regular deadlifts, I did hurt it with SLDL and Tbar rows and cheat curls.

you know before gh15 you posted in support of deadlifts. you said sometimes you loved to just go in the gym and do 12 sets of deadlifts then leave,, very productive day,,great workout itself. So at least one of you likes deadlifts

even now i say dead lifts are ok ,, dont confuse my words,, i just say notice what i say! i just say we do it mainly at beggining!,, when i said i went to gym to do deadlifts 12 sets and go home,,it ws earlier in my career ,, the more advanced bodybuild you become the less you need it ,, the more you realize you can go around it

I suppose I should rephrase then. Being short like I am, SLDL's are what I used for many years. Great traps, etc., with good form, but my LB is effed for life.

I actually never feel deadlifts in my lower back. All glutes maybe some traps and lats. Anyone else the same way?
