More from Marketwatch:
New applications for U.S. unemployment compensation rose by 5,000 last week to 417,000, boosted in part by thousands of claims by striking phone workers, the Labor Department said Thursday. Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 412,000 from an original reading of 408,000. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected new requests for jobless benefits to total 410,000 in the week of Aug 20. At least 8,500 workers at Verizon Communications filed claims last week and at least 12,500 filed claims the week before, the government said. The average of new claims over the past four weeks, meanwhile, increased by 4,000 to 407,500. The monthly average is seen as a more accurate gauge of labor trends because it smoothes out volatility in the week-to-week data. Continuing claims, which reflect people already receiving unemployment checks, fell by 80,000 to 3.64 million in the week ended Aug. 13. A total of 7.29 million people received some kind of state or federal benefit in the week of Aug. 6, down 45,989 from the prior week.

But get ready to see the UE to stay at 9.1%. The UE should be at way over 9%.
-
I'm sure that this was completely unexpected

Shocking that this thread is already getting pushed off the first page while a thread about Romney expanding his house is now 3+ pages. ::)
-
And the economic misery keeps rolling on and on and on.
But hey - let's extend ue and food stamps. That will get us out of the hole. Welfare for all - a food stamp in every pot!

Perhaps you forgot about the Verizon strike..... ::)
Just like the stock market, it goes up and it goes down

400k stil at this point is a freaking disaster and shows we are still losing jobs and the labor participation rate is still plunging.
Mind you - the labor force is millions less than when obastard took office, so the 400k number is that much worse as a matter of scale.

Very true. The Verizon strikers were only allowed to collect UE benefits in NY, only, by the way.
Anything even remotely close t0 400-405k is awful. Going down to 375k is still terrible. We've been around 400k for a year or more.
Stop trying to spin. The indicators are bad, real bad.
