Pentagon Warns China's Military Is Growing Rapidly

WASHINGTON – Bolstered by the development of a new stealth fighter, an aircraft carrier and a record number of space launches over the past year, China is on pace to achieve its goal of building a modern, regionally focused military by 2020, according to the Pentagon.
In a report released Wednesday, the Pentagon said Beijing has closed critical technological gaps and is rapidly modernizing its military equipment, all with an eye toward preventing possible U.S. and allied intervention in a conflict with Taiwan. It also warns that the military expansion could increasingly stretch to the western Pacific in a move to deny U.S. and allies' access or movement there.
"The pace and scope of China's sustained military investments have allowed China to pursue capabilities that we believe are potentially destabilizing to regional military balances, increase the risk of misunderstanding and miscalculation and may contribute to regional tensions and anxieties," said Michael Schiffer, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia.
The report comes as the U.S. and Beijing struggle to restore their strained and volatile relations amid ongoing concerns about the largely unexplained military build-up, America's continuing support for Taiwan and persistent fractures over what are believed to be China-based cyber intrusions into American government and defense-related networks.
China froze military contacts with the U.S. last year to protest an arms sale to Taiwan worth more than $6 b nations in the region.
Republican House Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said Beijing's "increasing assertiveness," including its effort to deny access to the western Pacific is a growing concern and "has significant consequences for the security and stability of the region."
And he warned that security in the Pacific could be jeopardized if allies believe that the U.S. will scale back its military presence in the region in order to cut defense spending.
China's cyber activities have also been an increasing point of tension.
In 2010, the report said, a number of computer systems, including U.S. networks, were the target of intrusions that appeared to originate in China. The breaches were aimed at stealing data, but they exhibit the same skills needed for more destructive network attacks.
The Pentagon estimates that China spent more than $160 billion for its military in 2010. U.S. defense spending for that year was about $550 billion, not including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Defense officials have repeatedly called for China to be more transparent about its intentions surrounding the military build-up, but the report also notes that Beijing continues to profess that the growth is peaceful.

First of all China has no means to transport their massive army over the ocean, unless you think they have developed a technology to walk on water.
Second they have a massive army that is poorly trained and equipped, maybe human wave attacks worked in Korea, but no in this day and age.
Third the Chinese have been manipulating there currency and playing the same game the rest of the world has, in the not to distant future China is no going to be in such great financial shape.

I don't know...we pretty much kicked the ever living shit out of them every chance we got. But u saw first hand didn't you. Come on 240 you know better then that. China, even in 10 years, wouldn't be a match for us militarily and it probably wouldn't be close. Numbers really don't matter, especially infantry or even massed tank assaults.
China lacks the technology, the transport assets, a blue water navy, true ability for proper force projection and the ability to sustain said projection. Even with them possibly getting a sample of the stealth Blackhawk it doesn't mean they will be able to do anything with it. It's one thing to steal and counterfeit Ipads and old Russion engine tech(which the Chinese are really, really good at)but it's a whole a different galaxy when it comes to actual large scale production of highly complex equipment that requires precision, attention to detail and quality control. That "stealth" fighter they showed off a few months ago is probably fitted with dirty, unreliable, outdated and poor performing Chinese built engines and won't see actual production in 10 years, if ever. Take a look at it this way, the Chinese make a huge deal about launching their first carrier, which isn't even close in size or capability to any U.S. carrier and is an old Russian design they bought at auction, as a show of force...when they don't even have proper supporting vessels to form a true carrier battle group. It's a sitting duck at best. After they show it off DARPA goes and shows off a hyper-sonic craft that, even without a warhead, could sink that carrier if launched from Vandenburg. That's the gap, it's wide.
I'd argue that they aren't even a true regional military power. Plus they will probably need all those soldiers to quell the social unrest in 10 years or earlier rather than invading Taiwan or starting another scuffle somewhere else. They will rattle the saber and force a conflict with someone only if (in my opinion) The Party feels as if they are losing control. This is something that is likely as China is smoke and mirrors and cooked books when it comes to economics.
Oh, and China imports more than 50% of their grain/wheat etc because they lack arable land and have too many mouths to feed...keep that in mind.
Chinese isn't very capitalist, they are still very, very centrally managed, they are still Communist...please remember that. Most of their people still live in squalor, they cook their books with the best of them, their banks are poor and their inflation is creeping up. 240, your simplistic and idiotic and continuous claims about "China cutting off the money.." is dumb, they need us to buy their shit and they can't unpeg their currency and Europe won't be able to fill the void b/c they're totally fucked.
