You could try this one- http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/CalRequire.html . That site is very good.

I've always just used weight x 12 or 14, and adjusted up or down after a week or 2 from there.

Trial and error = empirical data.

What are your stats? Maybe we can get you a head start.

200 pounds
5'7
activity level.. moderate I guess.
bf around 10% maybe 12%? I dont know.

Well I was trying to figure out how many cals we really need...it seems you can estimate them only by experience since the "15 x bw" etc crap methods doesnt suit for all people, maybe for regular people.

I'm 12 stone 7 all year round, if I go to work and come home I'm 12 stone 7. For the last.3 months I've been cycling 3-5 hours  4 days a week and eat the same. I'm now 12 stone7 and look the same.  I don't buy the calorie thing. If I want to loose weight I stop eating carbohydrates.

I do think calories matter more than that, but I'm the same. Carbs are a huge part of it for me.

add 1000 cals a day 7days = 7000 cals = 2lb gain it's not rocket science.
