Some college kids get summer internships. Others just play Xbox until fall.

UCLA math major Chris Jeon wanted "a sick vacation" - so he went to go fight in the Libyan revolution.

"I thought it would be cool to join the rebels," he said. "I just thought I'd come check it out."

Jeon, 21, doesn't speak any Arabic. He couldn't work the AK-47 he was handed.

But when reporters from The National and the Christian Science Monitor found him Thursday at Al Nawfaliyah, near the front lines of the battle with Moammar Khadafy's loyalists, he seemed to be doing okay.

Dressed in fatigues, Converse sneakers and a bright blue basketball jersey emblazoned "Los Angeles," Jeon was both a curiosity and something of a mascot for the rebels.

"I haven't spent a dollar in weeks," Jeon said, saying he's being housed and fed by random revolutionaries.

The rebels gave him a shotgun to carry and an honorary Libyan name: Ahmed El Maghrabi Saidi Barga.

Every time he said it, the rebels around him roared in approval.

Jeon said the batteries for his camera and phone have both died, but "I have great footage."

About two weeks ago, Jeon bought an $800 one-way ticket from L.A. to Cairo, then traveled by land across the border into Libya, he told reporters.

He plans to go back to California before school starts at the end of September.

The Christian Science Monitor asked him if he worried about his safety, caught up in a chaotic civil war in which thousands have died.

Not really, he said: "I believe in destiny."

Fumbling with his AK-47, Jeon located the safety and awkwardly fired a few rounds into the air.

His fellow fighters cheered and laughed.

Then they took the gun away before he could do any harm.

"Whatever you do, don't tell my parents," he begged reporters. "They don't know I'm here."

That was before Jeon became a hero to slacker students everywhere.

Meanwhile in Paris, Secretary of State Clinton met with senior members of Libya's opposition National Transitional Council.

She told them the United States believed dying Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset al-Megrahi should never have been freed from a Scottish prison and should be locked up now.

But she did not link his imprisonment to the unfreezing of Libyan assets, as New York Sen. Chuck Schumer had urged.
