Post by: Dos Equis on September 05, 2011, 09:08:10 AM
Heard (and read) that no Republican in modern times has won the nomination without winning South Carolina.

Here are the 2008 results:

McCain 147,686, 33%
Huckabee 132,943, 30%
Thompson 69,651, 16%
Romney 68,142, 15%
Paul 16,154, 4%
Giuliani 9,557, 2%
Hunter 1,051, 0%

Not sure what the current polling is?

Perry's up 15 or 17 there at the moment.

Romney and NEWT have both led there, this year.  Trump and bachmann both had solid 2nd's, too didn't they?

Where SC is today matters not.  Perry's enjoying the same "I just announced!" BUMP that mitt and bachmann enjoyed.  Once he does his first debate and has to defend the  9+ nutbag things he said i his book, his numbers will drop.  He's the flavor of the week.

SC primary takes place pretty late - feb 28th.  by then, GOP voters have 1 or 2 viable options to choose from.

if perry loses the first 5 primaries, and isn't top 2 by then, nobody will waste their SC vote on him.
