Title: Smith Machine - what does the bar weigh?
Post by: wild willie on September 07, 2011, 09:57:05 AM
How do we truly know what a Smith machine bar weighs???

In other words....if we have 2 plates on each side.....is it less than 225??? I know the olympic bar weighs 45 pounds.....but how about the Smith machine??? I thought that I had heard each machine is a little different.....some 15 pounds....others are heavier......let's discuss.

15 lbs usually... I've seen some where the counterweights are a bit lighter and the bar is 25 lbs unweighted but those are the only two weights I've ever heard or know of.

Depends on the smith machine, some of the older smith machines are heavier than 45lbs.

Some shitty ones do indeed seem heavier than just free weights. Terrible angles, shit maintenance in some cases, etc. I always liked the Flex smith's where you could alter the position of the bench in so many ways, hit good lines to get a great pump, and feel 100% sure of being able to lock it out training alone. Smooth, the actually weight doesn't matter if you make it a challenge Could do most presses on it and feel the muscle work better than Hammer stuff to me, and I like Hammer stuff.

So Smith machine with proper bar is shitty? Show me one which has lighter bar than proper olympic bar? I think builders all around want to know what they are lifting, and there fore machine builders use standard components, like olympic bars when building these machines. Any other way would be silly, so try to gain some strength and you don't have to mind those things so much...

Usually 15 pounds. So, no, when you have two 45s on each side, it's not 225, but rather 195.

Different machines have different weights. All that matters is that you compare A to A and B to B.
