Attack Watch Snitch Site a Focus of Internet Fun

Back when the Obama administration was young, the White House set up what amounted to a snitch line, an email address where people were invited to report on other people bad-mouthing the president of the United States on health care.
The snitch line was soon taken down. However, it has now been resurrected in the form of a website called Attack Watch. People are invited to use the website to report on other people who are running down President Obama. In this way the Obama campaign for reelection would gather information to "fight smears."
According to the Washington Post, the reaction has not been as the Obama people have expected.
It seems Attack Watch has become the figure of fun for people on the Internet, particularly conservative bloggers who are flooding the website to turn themselves in. The site has backfired in a spectacular fashion, causing Obama to seem like a paranoid, Nixon-like figure on steroids.
The problem is one of the unstated job descriptions for president is to catch flack from people who don't like the executive. This can be galling, especially when the attacks get personal or are perceived to be unfair. Various presidents have reacted differently to the chatter of their enemies.
Nixon, for example, compiled an enemies list and plotted against unfriendly reporters. Clinton would constantly complain about the then-nascent talk radio sector, especially Rush Limbaugh, and had a war room-style operation during the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
By contrast, Reagan and both Bushes dealt with attacks either with good humor in the former case or by ignoring them in the latter. One criticism of President George W. Bush is that he ignored attacks a little too much, allowing some of the accusations to take hold without a response.

A source within the Obama campaign has told Mediaite, that in just the first day, the user-generated research tool has been nothing short of an enormous success. “In less than 24 hours we’ve had over 100,000 people sign up at the website, which indicates significant interest from supporters.”
While the volume of conservative critiques speaks to the intensity of the opposition’s feelings towards the Obama administration, at the very least this digital effort did it’s job bit perhaps instilling a little fear in the GOP campaign efforts. It’s not difficult to imagine social media staffers at the RNC scratching their heads and saying “why didn’t we think of that?”
The essence of AttackWatch is the Obama campaign outsourcing of opposition media research to its army of loyal supporters. Among the critiques leveled at this interactive effort is the notion that this is some vestige of “Big Brother” keeping an eye on citizens opposed to the White House politics. This would be a fairer analysis if it were made before the advent of social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. In the brave new world that is oppo research and political smear campaigns, leveraging the passion of one’s political base is not something that we should fear, but rather a smart and savvy political move.

Barack Obama's "Obama for America" group has launched a website called AttackWatch. And what this site is supposed to do, ostensibly, it is to provide a place for Americans to snitch on their fellow Americans. Well, to be honest, if I report that Barack Obama is the worst president ever because of his economic, military, constitutional rights, energy, immigration, healthcare policies, then little Obamaites can run to AttackWatch.com and report me. AttackWatch will kindly then provide them all the facts and figures to counter my "attack." Because to Barack Obama, facts are not acceptable, they are ATTACKS! (His emphasis, not mine.)
Then they decided it would be a brilliant idea to create a Twitter account called @AttackWatch and a hashtag called #AttackWatch. I do believe that's where their biggest mistake was made.
New York Magazine calls it "Obama assuming a fighting stance with AttackWatch.com website," I call it the height of ridculousness in an already farcical campaign. And you should have seen it hit the Twitterworld Tuesday night. If Barack Obama thought anyone with an iota of common sense would take this site seriously, he was dead wrong.

A new Twitter hashtag designed to help fight misinformation against President Obama appears to have backfired in early use on Wednesday.
President Obama's Twitter feed, which is run by his campaign staff, on Tuesday evening started promoting the new website AttackWatch.com and hashtag #AttackWatch, designed to fight misinformation against the president.
The hashtag was already in heavy rotation by Twitter users by Wednesday morning, but many users are conservatives such as columnist Michelle Malkin, who offered up her own daily column as an example of an Obama "attack."

The push, which includes a website and a Twitter feed, received instant ridicule from conservatives and inspired a satirical introduction video that quickly went viral. The whole thing brought back memories of the Obama White House searching for "fishy" emails about Obamacare.
But it looks like the false attacks either aren't coming in or haven't been a priority. The Twitter feed has been silent now for nearly three weeks, and the website hasn't been updated for the same amount of time.
