Should we continue our government funding scientific research or leave it 100% to the private sector?

In an atmosphere of cutting spending should we cut scientific research funding?  Maintain it? Or cut it completely? Or increase it?

The 70's and 80's saw innovations that were in large part born from the space race.  A lot of the nifty shit we see today is now probably hand me downs from kill-em-all science funded for military applications.  Even the internet, Gore didn't invent it, the military did.

This.

A lot of the stuff we take for granted today was born out of military research. I can think of other things to cut spending on first.

No, scientific research should be considered a "corner stone" of a nation.

Not only should we not fund science, we should discard it altogether.

It's only making God mad and driving Him to start more earthquakes. That and the gays.

If anything, increase it (so long as it is put to relatively good use).  The endowments granted to the various universities across the US have made a great many contributions such as the University of Florida to agriculture down here.

If anything, cut Defense spending by a significant amount.....there is no reason for us to be maintaining hundreds of bases overseas where there is no threat(Germany, Japan, Italy, S. Korea).  Make Social Security a personal, low-interest government bank....what you, as a person puts in, is what you get out of it when you hit the retirement age.  Cut social services by a significant amount......there is no reason at all for able-bodied people to collect welfare, free housing, free cell phones, EBT cards, and free electricity/energy to their free homes. Reduce or eliminate wasteful foreign aid, especially to hostile nations.

Tax the shit out of soda, candy, chips, all junk food on top of fast food....implement taxes on strip bars(Gentleman Clubs my ass)...give nice, scary warnings on junk food and fast food as they do on cigarettes.

Woops....sorry.....Rant Off

So what are examples of good things we fund?  What are examples, like this ball washing thing, of bad things we fund?

So what are examples of good things we fund?  What are examples, like this ball washing thing, of bad things we fund?

Some great examples are from the University of Pittsburgh, which receives over $600 million annually in research grants.  The University itself is one of the nation's top hospitals and its primary research focus is in clinical medicine and engineering.  Rutgers has one of the most extensive studies for genetic disorders and diseases and a multitude of others.

Overall, scientific research endowments to our universities is absolutely crucial and must not be reduced.  This is what makes our nation great.

However, for shits and giggles, here are a couple of really bad ones:

- Scientists discovered castrated hamsters can still get it up.
- Scientists say "Do Not Castrate Your Children"
- Big Tittied Hitchhikers get picked up more often
- Fat Kids Get Bullied
- A Pig's Orgasm lasts 30 minutes

Yes we should continue.  Good investment.

If history has shown us anything,...Basic scientific research will always pay off eventually.

Yes, we should fund a serious manned mission to Mars to give this country some hope and re-vitalize Americans interest in science and space.  Just think what we could have done had that 800 billion stimulus waste been given to NASA or funded a private mission to Mars.  Our space program is an embarrassment right now.

You mean making it our top priority to reach out to muslims and make trhem feel good about themselves has not panned out too well?

Well, if having to use Russian rockets to get our astronauts into space because we decommissioned our own space shuttle with no replacement in sight is a measure of success, then I guess the muslim outreach priority has worked out pretty well.  At this rate, China or India will get to Mars faster than we will.

Government funded scientific research is absolutely necessary.

Private sector funding is a joke.  Remember how "scientists" and "doctors" would talk about the virtues of smoking?

Agreed, well said.

Are you out of your goddamn mind?  If pigs actually have 30 minute orgasms, I wanna know exactly how, and what can be done to apply it to humans.

We should be throwing money at this shit hand over fist.

Right. Jesus hated the poor and was always telling them to go fvck themselves.

You're a complete idiot.
