Title: Should the Yankees job to the Rays, to get rid of the Red Sox?
Post by: MCWAY on September 28, 2011, 08:02:02 AM
Notwithstanding the fact that I'm from the Tampa Bay area and would love to see the Rays make the playoffs, it make sense to me for the Yanks to lay down.

They have home-field advantage. If they roll over, they get their guys some rest. And, in doing so, they can also get rid of those pesky Red Sox, in the process. If the Orioles beat the Sox, THEY ARE DONE.

If I'm the Yankees, I take the night off.

What say you?

The Yankees have said last week that the last game of the regular season would be a mix of bullpen guys and AAA players.  It's more about setting up their team for the playoffs than trying to have an impact on their opponent.  The Yankees had a chance to really hurt Boston in their extra innings game the other night, but refused to pinch hit Jeter, Arod, etc in key situations.

It's actually beneficial the for NY that the sox and Tampa extend themselves in a one game playoff, thus weakening them for the ALDS.

Then, they need to let the Rays win. That forces the Red Sox to dig deep, just to make it to that wildcard round.

I agree, but you can only do so much.  You can't tell players to mess up on purpose, especially the kids who are getting their first experience in the big leagues.

I am still stunned over the turn of events last night.

Look at what happened in the Sox' 8th inning, 9th innning,  Yanks 8th-9th-12th, etc....

Couldn't have scripted it.

Couldn't have scripted the Braves doing the same thing...or the rain delay that made all this stuff happen minutes apart.

Almost makes me wish I still watched the game.

Yup.  It's being touted as the greatest night in regular season baseball history.   So many games that had regular season impact, and so many events within those games that were unbelievable.

I'm glad the Phillies didn't tank the game to Atlanta.  I can see the Cards doing some damage.

Maybe.....Philly is a beast.  They're the odds on favorite until they lose.  Halladay/Lee/Hamels/Halladay/Lee is almost impossible to beat in a five game series.

no doubt it will be a very tough series but I am banking on the fact that St. Louis plays the elite teams tough but seem to let the bad teams beat them.  Houston, Cubs, Pittsburgh.

Yeah, but that's just how baseball is.  When the elite of the sport don't reach base 6 out of 10 times, there's going to be an unpredictable ebb and flow.
