Title: The Asian & European horror movies thread
Post by: kiwiol on October 11, 2011, 05:36:30 PM
Anyone here into Asian horrors? Could be anything - Chinese, Korean, Japanese, whatever...

Some of them are very well done and quite different from the standard Hollywood horrors, which is why they get remade in English. Thought we could have a thread just for these.

Some of the good ones I've seen so far:

The Ringu series - Japanese and has 3 parts, including 1 prequel. Was remade into the The Ring, which was pretty good and Ring 2, which sucked.

Ju' on or The Grudge - Another Japanese trilogy that's been remade in Hollywood, with just the first one being good. The 2nd was so-so and the 3rd one sucked.

Chakushin ari aka One Missed Call. Good Japanese horror that's been remade in HW. Haven't seen the latter yet.

Will add more to this list. Horror fans unite!

I'm afraid not. I did see a couple of Korean movies that were dubbed and it was horrible, lmao :-X I'd rather have subtitles than english audio badly dubbed, even though the former is also quite annoying.

If you can overlook the subs issue, there are some really good movies out there.

Some more that I recommend:

A Tale of Two Sisters aka Janghwa, Hongryeon - Korean movie that is more of a thriller than horror, even though it's about ghosts. Very good atmosphere.

Dark Water aka Honogurai mizu no soko kara - Japanese flick that was remade in Hollywood with Jennifer Connelly (haven't seen it yet). Fairly creepy with decent atmosphere.

Shutter - Thai movie that is pretty creepy with some good scenes and a great ending.

The Orphanage - Spanish horror movie with some excellent scenes and a very haunting atmosphere. Very well done.

Saint Ange aka House of Voices - French movie that is slightly similar to The Orphanage and not as good, but worth a watch.

I will check to see if Netflix stocks these titles and add them, thx. Horror is my favorite genre.
