Wasn't he also very light body weight wise for that contest, like 160ish.. great shape and insertions for bb.
-
and some people on this board still don't understand the concept of foundation.
they don't see how phil and jay are bloated compared to that.
-
Well, it's Danny or Tom. Franco's win was just another IFFB abomination. :-\

Tom Platz was better that year, he made Danny look small. But danny was def. 2nd.
-
Tom Platz was great but he just had oversized legs. Danny had the overall package. Great upper and lower body, great back, superb conditioning.
Franco only had a good conditioned upper body. his legs and lower half were shit. don't forget the gyno.
Danny #1
-
Danny was a miniature Arnold. He should have won in '81.
-
How about Chris Dickerson? Many may disagree with me here. In my opinion, he should be Mr O in 80 and 81. Chris muscle maturity was out of this world. Not forgetting his symmetry and proportion. Great Legs and back. A well deserved win at the 82 'O'. I still have one of the very old muscle mag 'Muscle Training Illustrated' had a report on the 82 Mr.O. My brother brought it back from Canada for his summer college break. I was only 12. ;D
-
Midgets cant be Mr O.. ;D

nope Chris was not as good as the others in 1981.
Arnold was the clear winner in 1980. It wasn't a prime Arnold it was enough to crush the rest of the competition. Anyone who ever tries to argue 1980 in favor of anyone but Arnold is an idiot.
-
Tom Platz was better that year, he made Danny look small. But danny was def. 2nd.
I agree! I was there that year and Platz was the winner all the way. Either Roy Callendar or Padilla should have been 2nd, Dickerson was 4th and Franco was 5th.
-
He barely has any height? Everybody knows, in most cases the shorter limbs, the thicker the muscles!
-
I don't think anybody would have complained if it went to either Platz or Padilla. Just not Franco. The worse Mr. Olympia in it's history. Smooth bow legs, glaring gyno. But being Arnold's Sardinian side kick the fix was in.
-
it's a shame that the video footage from 1981 is utter shit. Pretty much any of the footage after Arnold's retirement is garbage. Even some years there are few pictures it sucks.
-
Can't disagree - Danny would have been a worthy winner in 1981. He was almost as big as Franco's bitch tit.
-
dany looks great in all poses!!..
-
In the pictures he looks great, but next to normal sized people he's a muscular dwarf, and that looks very stupid..
-

dickerson deserved a mr o win, but 82 was samirs, chris wasnt at his best anymore, souldve won it in 80, it was gonna be his, but arnold threw a spanner in the works
-
In the pictures he looks great, but next to normal sized people he's a muscular dwarf, and that looks very stupid..
but beside franco colombo the winner of the 81 mr. olympia i dont think dany looked that short!!..
-
but beside franco colombo the winner of the 81 mr. olympia i dont think dany looked that short!!..
correct
between dickerson, danny, franco it was land of the hobbits, platz not much taller
-
Tom Platz was better that year, he made Danny look small. But danny was def. 2nd.
Yeh, Platz should have edged it and Danny 2nd - 1980 and 1981 were both Weider Gift years to Arnold & Franco.
-
You decide ;D
-
franco should have come 4th or lower!!.. no legs, gyno, not the best shape overall too!!..
-
Yeh, Platz should have edged it and Danny 2nd - 1980 and 1981 were both Weider Gift years to Arnold & Franco.
Yeah, that was my pick. I think he really improved his upper body a lot and his back looked great. He also had a different over all looked. Like he took his body to hell and back for the show. There was a certain polish and gleam to his physique and overall presentation. Padilla was sheer perfection with no weak points but Platz had a certain freakiness about him. I had Callendar third. He also had bow legs like Franco and it really distracts from his overall presences. But at least his quads had cuts unlike Franco.
It was that year, I was around 21 at time, that I stopped following bodybuilding. I thought 1980 was fixed but '81 was just a travesty. I concluded it was just all politics and not a legit sport. I saw it kind of like WWE wrestling. Just a prearrange show. I missed the whole Haney and Dorain era and caught the tail end of Coleman and only started following it again I think in 2004 when I saw "Unbelievable" at a friend's house. Going from Franco to a prime Coleman was a shock. So much had changed. And being on this board keeps me current. In fact, if it wasn't for this board I probably wouldn't follow the sport. The fact that we get to discuss so many different and varied issues with people all over the world keeps me here. I've tried other bodybuilding boards and it's gets old. I can only talk bodybuilding for so long.
-
if any of the judges who juged this contest is still alive he must be killed!!..
-
Franco's tits were just short of hanging low enough to hide his non existing legs. What a sham. PLatz, Padilla or Callendar were all good enough to take it; just a matter of perspective. Arnold's win in 80 wasn't even as bad (though he "crushed" no one and nothing at all that year).
-
Based on the above pics, i still think Chris Dickerson looked the best (at least in the front double bicep shot). I like his quads shape and separation and v-taper. How did Chris fare in 81? ???
-
yes danny got robbed they said he looked over-dieted-lol. he was super shredded and he only weighed 160pds that night. so it is possible to be short and be light yet still have the illusion that you weigh 200pds. alot of people idolize danny and franco I know I do being 5-6. I am going for that kind of look right now I am 188pds 6% getting there! Franco was way stronger and just a weider brown noser. although franco is my favorite he did get a gift that year
-

2nd and he had a much better case then Mentzer to be pissed off that year. From what I remember, Arnold really looked terrible, his legs (rarely one of his strong points already) were just non existing. Chris was the only one who was actually in shape (Zane was comming back from an injury and was nowhere near his best, Mentzer looked like shit compared to the year before and not even the same guy who won Mr Universe) '81 was actually a much more competitive edition then '80 though.
-

how come with his left injured bicep?!..
-
how come with his left injured bicep?!..
i cant really tell from the pix that he had a torn left bicep. Its not a very bad torn like Dorian's so it didnt affect that pose much. :)
-

Judges ought to be placing the best physique as the winner.
-

Dickerson should have won in 1980. That night, Zane was a bit light but his balance and conditioning were light years above everyone else so placing behind Dickerson was a fair call.
It's impressive that Arnold was even able to be competitive with only 8 weeks of training for the show but that doesn't mean he deserved to win.
Franco winning in 1981 was just a complete and utter joke. Padilla, Platz, Dickerson and Callendar were all so much better than him. Based on physique alone, Padilla deserved to win that night but I could have accepted Platz winning.
Samir should have won in 1982 with Viator in second and Makkawy or Dickerson in third. Frank Zane is probably my favourite bodybuilder but he didn't look all that great in 1982.
-
This is the irony between today and back them, realistically they should of had a 1 win limit on how many times a person can place first to allow all the other talent floating around to get some credit. In todays age it'd be better if they only a differ winner every second decade. :-\
-

You look very stupid, you annoying asshole.
-
I was at both the prejudging and night show at the '81 Olympia and everyone in the audience thought the top three were Platz, Callendar and Padilla. Dickerson looked good and had a complete physique but those other three were great. Padilla looks unbeatable in pictures but in person on stage, he almost looked a little too flat. Callendar was very aggressive onstage and ripped with great thickness. I could have seen him in 2nd place. Platz had it all that year. He looked 15 pounds heavier than the year before but he was ripped with great charisma onstage, perfect tan, he had it all. He outsized most of the guys in the upper body, not to mention the legs. When the judges asked for a comparison of the abs-thigh pose, he was standing right next to Franco. Franco hit his abs and was twisting his legs to try and show some separation but he had none. Platz just smiled and then flexed his right leg and it exploded in striations. The crowd went nuts! Franco actually had a great upper body. He was super thick in the pecs, back and delts and even his arms looked great. His abs were rock hard. However, you can't have a missing bodypart like legs and place 1st. Not with guys like Platz, Callendar, Padilla and Dickerson in the line-up. All those guys had incredible leg development, especially in the early 1980's.

Good one. ::)

Franco Columbu = Worst Mr. O EVER gifted by being Arnold's friend.
How about anyone in the top 5 BUT Franco

I prefer front squats
not everyone can go deep, not everyone can keep back straight, some cant even squat

Yes, people don't realize how good he was.

I remember that. But according to Danny when he spoke with the judges they commenting on his face. They'd say stuff, "I could tell by your face that you looked drawn and over dieted." That's bullshit because his physique was not only rock hard but full. Not drawn at all. True his face very lean and a bit drawn. Very different to what we were use to seeing but so what? I just remember and article where Danny said that he didn't know that they also judge the condition of someone's face.
-
You decide ;D
Anybody but Columbu. Not to knock Franco. He was a great BB, but he shouldn't have won the O that year.
-
:o
-
:)

:D

Chris Dickerson did not deserve 1980. Get a fucking clue you lunatic. He looked great, but Arnold was the BEST that night. Arnold was just not prime, but it was enough to crush the others. His legs were basically the weak part of his 1980 physique.
Now Mike Mentzer was SHIT that night. Anyone who defends this shitty bodybuilder must be related to him or his gay lover. Mentzer was NARROW and looked like baby compared to Arnold. His GUT stuck out more than his chest LOL. This was in the era where there was no insulin gut. He had a small ass chest and his legs were not well conditioned just like Arnold.
Frank Zane got a gift that night as well. Shouldn't have been in top 5. That was one of his worst showings.
Arnold deserved every Olympia he won.
-
1980 should have been boyer coe,1981 up for grabs between callendar platz and padilla and 1982 should have been casey viator.
-
1980 should have been boyer coe
rofl no

I'm not a lunatic. Just insane.
Arnold didn't look bad at all, especially in his signature poses like the 3/4 shots. In some of the mandatories however, he looked way out of balance. Guys like Dickerson, Zane and Coe all had a more polished and professional look to their physiques.
Chris was incredible - full muscles, detail, poise and all class. Given the way the judging had been the previous few years, what Dickerson presented was well worth an Olympia title.
Zane was a little light but that was his only weakpoint. His balance, conditioning and posing were so far ahead of the others that placing behind Dickerson seemed a fair reward.
Watch Zane's posing routine and then compare it to Arnold's. Arnold is good but he simply repeats the same poses over and over. I'm hard-pressed to recall Zane hitting the same pose more than once in his routine.
When your physique lacks balance, there are only a few poses you can do that make you look good. Zane didn't have that problem and deserved, in my opinion, to place ahead of Arnold.

Back in the 80's THE BEEF wanted to bring Chris to Halifax, Nova Scotia to guest pose. His rates were reasonable however he insisted on travel expenses, food and lodging for his partner ( why do two lovers need separate rooms?) No profit to be made so THE BEEF passed.
THE BEEF

Arnold crushing Zane at the 1980 Mr Olympia. Nice twig legs.
That's what you get when your only things to prepare for Mr Olympia is a Shakeweight and swimming a few laps.

Arnold crushing Zane at the 1980 Mr Olympia. Nice twig legs.
Arnold crushing him with just genetics and structure alone. Zane was an athletes bodybuilder, not what a Mr. Olympia should look like.

Platz all the way..

fixed..

zane didnt do too bad considering he was hospitalized and almost died a few weeks before the show, days out he couldnt even walk, so excuse his muscle-loss
shouldnt have entered, but had he been in shape, things couldve been different, the fix would still have been in for arnold, but it wouldve been more obvious
-

Yes, that's right.
Of course that doesn't justify him winning (or not winning). It just explains why he looked the way he did. It just so happened that he looked fantastic.
And Arnold too, with only 8 weeks training, looked very good. Better than most on stage that night. But not better than all.
-

arnold did not train only 8 weeks, or 6 weeks or whatever different story they came up with then.. ::) ;D
typical arnold propaganda and larger than life shit he excelled at, he used the excuse of training for conan, and delays in production, and deciding last minute to compete. bullshit, he started training well in advance, and entered in less than stellar shape, with the last minute excuse in back pocket, just in case he failed to win
he played it well, arnold is a master at manipulation, this topic on training for 80 mr o is elaborated on in biography "fantastic"
-
Midgets cant be Mr O.. ;D
Agreed. Can't take short people serious.
-
I've seen the competition from '80 and Arnold won. Zane is a personal favorite of mine and Arnold bests him and the rest. Chris Dickerson is nothing compared to the Oak and isn't as good as Mentzer that year. 1981 was an entirely differenct story...
Padilla wasn't just robbed, he was fucking robbed. Franco against a vastly superior small man (Padilla) was gifted the Olympia that year. Platz is good but not complete in that he is pretty much a one trick pony (legs). As I said before, Padilla is a miniature Arnold or as close to it as we'll ever see. He and Makkawy are what a small in stature bodybuilder should look like. Franco was great, but not in '81.

zane wasnt good enough in 80 for obvious reasons
danny was fantastic, but like he himself said in his comeback: "at 5'2" 180lbs, how do I stand next to lee haney? aint gonna happen.." and in 80 he was under 170 next to a 6"2" 230 -240lb arnold. and the arnold name..

I can see why you think the way you do it's just that I disagree.
No worries.

I agree a million percent.
Franco was gifted and if he truly believes he desered to win that night, he is as delusioned as Zane says he is.
Padilla was incredible. In my view, the only thing that held him back in other contests was his conditioning.
Also, if he was overlooked because of his height, then the judges should be shot. Any fool can 'assess' height but I would have thought that a judge would know how to assess a physique...
Stupid judges.
