Rich was a smart guy and good writer. I think his head was too big for his body and made him look smaller than he was. Ray Mentzer had that problem, too. Maybe we can say that about Shawn Ray?

Do you think judges marked him down b/c of the size of his head?

There is a famous case back in 1971 at the NABBA Professional Mr Universe contest where Bill Pearl was placed ahead of Sergio Oliva.

The French judge who was a respected Physical Culture professor put Sergio second because his head was too small for his body!!!

Guys like Ray and Ricky were huge guys. Arthur Jones measured Ray's arm at 20 1/4 inches. Only Sergio was up there over 20 according to Arthur.

Judges don't put you down but you just don't look as big because of that larger head.

The best example of that was a guy named Billy Parker from those days. Good build but never placed high.

Here is what Billy would have looked like if his head was more in proportion. Makes a big difference to his overall appearance.

Almost had to do a double take, that looked like Richard Jones...Also Rick Wayne was 5'7, so that may have to do with the scale...

so thats the next step in bbing, finding a way to shrink heads to make body appear bigger!

sergio oliva had a small head, that explains his success

I wouldn't be surprised if gurus told competitors to shave their heads. Makes the head look smaller. Anything that helps you win is important.

Study the photo of my Photoshop of Ray and see how big his arms were. He was bigger than Arnold pound for pound.

yeah, ricky waynes afro made his head look bigger, much like robby in the early days

ray mentzer was a big man, no doubt, he had huge tris, 20in arms accurately measured by jones and darden, problem is never got in serious shape, and didnt have his brothers structure and flow. When youre not blessed with shape you need hard size

This is why back in the old days some guys would wait until the day of the show to get their hair cut.  It would give the appearance of being larger, wider if you will.  Illusion?  Yup, but then much of what bodybuilding is about is illusion.

vince,

did you train with him/know him well?
Title: Re: Anyone remember Rick Wayne?
Post by: Vince B on October 15, 2011, 07:33:01 AM
Ray stayed with my family for almost a year back in 87-88. So did his partner and baby. He worked at our gym for a while, too. I can't say I trained with Ray. I attended his seminars and training camps so know what he advocated. Very hard training but most guys couldn't stick with it. Essentially bodyparts twice a week. One directly and once indirectly.

I got to know Ray quite well. I introduced him the gal he married. That was on a NYEve. Yeah, his gal was at our place! Naughty boys.

If I'm not mistaken, Ray's arms were even bigger than Mikes.

I don't know if anyone's head was bigger than Mikes though... (that was a funny)

Isn't Sergio Olivas' tiny (not that one) head part of the reason he looked so big too?

Yep!   His arm at one point got bigger than his head.  Try to achieve THAT RATIO.

^....Regardless of Sergios head (witch was small in relation to his Physique) his Arms were Massive make no mistake in the year 1971 along with Arnold more than likely the Most massive muscular arms of the day @ a BW of 230-240lbs witch was absolutely HUGE for a BBer back in that day and age.

I have three accounts. The Timea one has almost reached its bandwidth. Photobucket is changing their policy also. Ive got so much of her stuff in there, I don't know if she still wants me to keep it, or if she is done with it. She still has me work on her stuff, so there is no sense really in closing it down. I would overload my hard-drive if I had to keep her stuff on my computer. When I log on, the Timea one is the first one to come up....

I originally opened the account for her way back when I started doing her Myspace graphics (which are still up BTW)

You should consider it a priveledge, Steve!! I know you two are buds.   Ha ha. If you want to be moved to one of my other accounts, I can do that, just don't expect me to keep you on my personal hard drive!

(BTW, I know you don't really care) ~ you know, that pic took a lot of work to make it look believable. Give me some props bro!

Another thing, where in the hell is she these days? She must be back in Hungary or New York. She's not spending a lot of time in So Cal anymore. I used to hear from her all the time. Hope she's O.K.

I take what he says with a grain of salt. True, his articles were entertaining, but he either took credit for something he shouldn't have or he embellishes stories.
