Title: Cro Cop: "I was shaking for five minutes"
Post by: 240 is Back on October 21, 2011, 12:23:15 PM
Mirko Filipovic is convinced that his career nearly came to an end on Thursday morning. Forget the fights. Forget the bloody battles he's been in, the knockouts he's suffered, the countless training sessions he's suffered through. This was serious.

The Croatian heavyweight, the Pride legend and veteran of nearly 40 MMA bouts, the great "Cro Cop" was nearly done in by a couple of stairs.

In his defense, the stairs were wet. It was raining out and he was headed off to training, but as he bounded down the stairs his foot hit a wet spot and he almost went down hard.

"I can't believe I didn't fall. I cannot remember when I was so scared," he said. "I could have broken my spine just like that. My foot slipped on the stairs because it was wet, and I was shaking for five minutes because I was so close, and I was so happy."

For Filipovic, the lesson in all this was clear right away. He's known his whole career that, in this sport, it could all be over in an instant. But it's one thing to know it intellectually or theoretically, and another to feel that fluttering fear that comes when your feet slide out from under you -- that irrational, trembling panic. He got the message: you're on borrowed time, pal.

For the 37-year-old Cro Cop, it won't necessarily take a freak injury to push him the rest of the way out of the sport. It could be as simple as getting beat by Roy Nelson at UFC 137 next Saturday night, and he knows it.

He was a very very good fighter in "PRIDE", even got close at beating fedor ffs.
I wish him the best at his recovery, but i sadly think hes time has passed.

Is there a chance of crokop winning?

At this stage in his career, absolutely none. His striking has deteriorated to that of a small show mid-carder, his killer instinct has been replaced by that of a man that thinks its better to hug and smile during a fight & his hit resistance is barely a notch above Chucks.

Nelson by brutal KO.  :'(

I don't understand - of course you can't peak forever but a "maintanence fight mode" should be somehow achievable.

Seems like he was the fighter most affected by the UFC drug testing.......

He was an animal in Pride (albeit younger).

CroCop belongs to the Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva school of MMA fighters: guys who are awesome on steroids but mediocre without them. Most fighters become only a little better on steroids than without them, but others are vastly superior on them. I think the UFC should make an exception for Wandy and CroCop and let them get back on the sauce for their last fights. The fans deserve to see these two in "animal mode" again for their last fights.

No one in mma over 155 lbs is off steroids, also pride was a mix of fighting and pro wrestling, mirko was never ever a good fighter, always a mediocre to bad fighter no matter what he did or who he beat

Cro cop is 37 ffs! What the hell do you think! Ofcourse he could go out more honorably, like stepping down but this is what it is!

Secondly even the 155 pounders use steroids in mma, atleast I t hink so. Why wouldn't they.

rofly, yeah, the one "equipose" would really give an extra effect that we could notice after all that other shit!

Why not? They have lost a ton of fights at this point and they will never be champions of their divisions again. They are also old and almost retiring. Why not let the fans see them in animal mode for a few last times before they retire? I want to see the CroCop that demolished Aleksander Emelianenko and Josh Barnett. I want to see the Wandy that kneed Rampage into a coma. I want to see them at their bests for a few last times. They could make it non-valid fights, just a "parting gift" for their fans.

yes, god damn I remember seeing that match  the first time, freaking legendary!

Tournaments like these should come back!  The whole video game atmosphere and dragonball z attitudes are so much better than some ufc's. It's like watching olympics. Makes me inspirational actually..

I would like to know how these guys pass test if they do juice. If I was a fighter I would go on hrt. I would go hard in the offseason and then time the esters to get things back to normal before the test. I think Chael does that.

Anderson Silva has insulin in his house, but it could be just someone in his house is a diabetic. He also had a couple of supplements, like "Dark Rage" and "T-Bomb II" http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/news/291394/Items-purportedly-in-Silva-Cribs-background-not-as-implied/

When Cro Cop got knocked the F out from a kick to the head in his first UFC fight, that was the Mike Tyson/Buster Douglas moment in his career. He was/is never the same. Some may even say he has no heart.

see mirko looked so fresh there, and had that killer look in his eyes, now he is just a shadow of those times, mma really undermines your body after some years damn, that mirko could easily be the ufc champ nowadays

why would a fighter use insulin? doesn't make any sense. there are more suitable drugs.

Athletes are using every drug under the sun. People STILL inject creatine and B vitamins daily for whatever edge they can get.

People just figured him out, particularly in the UFC all he would do/does is circle around and look for the the left high kick. Its a shame as he was one of the greats back in the Pride days.

Re : Wanderlei one of my favourite ever moments of his was actually not a fight but when Rampage called him out after just winning a tournament fight against Randleman. Rampage  had the mike and said "I want you next boy" or whatever, and Wandy just went psycho and got into the ring and it all went off. mayhem with about 30 odd people holding him back. It was so great because I think Rampage was only doing it for the theatre/hype but he clearly had no idea of the huge pride(no pun) and just sheer animal instincts Silva had back then.

No, CroCop got old and slow.

Well there is not a single fighter on earth this won't happen to. He was top 3 with Fedor and Noguera when Pride was in its heyday, the best fighting there's been probably and Mirko was right up there!

CroCop was never the same after the Gabriel Gonzaga knockout. Roy Nelson will tire him out and submit him in the 2nd round - and it should be the last of Mirko we ever see in an UFC ring.

Sadly, he'll probably fight again.

So he basically broke his mental spine?
Maybe a psychologist could help.

After a couple feints and some ducking and weaving, that's what Fedor looks like lol

Sad to see him and Cro Cop on the decline. Bike Nut's right. After the head kick from Gonzaga he had defeated himself. He won't recover. :(

In related news, Roy "Chubby" Nelson nearly trod in some blueberry syrup while leaving the IHOP

A source close to the fighter confirmed his training program was put back on track when he soaked up the syrup with a leftover twinkie he found under his armpit.
