yes he was
great arms, and very good back and calves
-
Impressive! I wonder why so few photos capture him with flexed abs.
-
I think it was mostly genetic..but what if he trained them heavy with weights? Would they improve as in "pop"?
-
i never did like his build always looked kinda weird

Wonder when that pic was published and if it is somehow touched up.

Don Youngblood was a trucker earlier in his life so that may have contributed to his ill health. FLEX published a photo of him at age 28 before he started training and he was overweight. He had gone through angioplasty a little while before he died and was still considering a comeback at the 2006 New York Pro, but died a year prior to that.
Although I would agree that with a business that most likely did millions a year in sales, that bodybuilding was not necessarily a wise idea given the health risks it entails. Why consider pro bodybuilding after angioplasty? Who knows, but obviously Don loved it, for whatever reason.

always figured that Boyer would be the guy to go to for ab training. If he could get abs with his bad ab genetics, you'd have to think the guy knew what worked and what didn't.

A GREAT GUY A GREAT POSER . . IF HIS BUILD WAS WEIRD . then dickerson was even more so . small arms and what else . i think boyer should have won olympia at least once .
-
Just Nature, he did train hard but at the end of the Day you canīt change the shape of your abs. Some have straight abs others unsymmetrical abs. I liked Pierre Vandensteen from Belgium. Not a big guy but showed impressive abs.
-
Lots of people ragged on Boyers lack of ab development over the years, but he was proportionate, had a tiny ass waist,(unlike the blobs of todays),insane calves, split biceps peaks, great quads (not balloonlike mind you,but impressive).......he more than makes up for his absent abs by being one of the guys who won just about every title in the galaxy and can be rightfully described as a pioneer and a living legend.
Anyone that disputes the above can take a hike!!

Anyone has his training routine?
^^
Before listing Boyer's training routine for the 1980 Mr. Olympia, I would like to give you his feelings on diet. Boyer is a heavy eater, having between four and five large meals a day. Boyer believes in using additional protein in the form of a good protein supplement with each meal. He also takes a good vitamin and mineral food supplement and wheat germ oil with every meal. His meals consist of meats of all kinds, (beef being his favorite), eggs, cheese, and cottage cheese. To balance out this high-protein meal, Boyer eats fresh fruit and vegetables. He avoids all high carbohydrates, such as bread, cakes, candy, ice cream, and gravies. He uses milk in large quantities during the year, but avoids it completely the last 4 to 6 weeks before a contest.
The following is the exact training routine Boyer used two months before the 1980 Mr. Olympia.
The workout was divided into three separate workouts. Monday and Thursday we worked chest, shoulders, triceps; Tuesday and Friday, thighs, back, and biceps; Wednesday and Saturday, trapezius and lower back. The abdominal section and calves were worked every day. We did about fifteen minutes of many different abdominal exercises, such as sit.ups, leg raises, and all sorts of twisting exercises. For the calves, we did 15 sets of 15 repetitions of toe raises.
The rest of our program, then, looks like this:
MONDAY AND THURSDAY
Exercise Sets Reps
Bench Press 4 6
Inclined Bench Press 4 8
Dips 4 8
Press Behind Neck 4 6

This pic circa 1970 or so... Boyer was unparalleled in having such plain raw genetics coupled with a classic physique... Who has these clean lines today? No one... He was an amazing bodybuilder...

he once blasted frank zane . telling some hard truths about the man physique . boyer always been one of my fave . a great poser . too . this is overlooked

back in '82 he threw a pig skin a quarter mile

5'8" and 210 pounds. What's most amazing about that era of bodybuilding is that every single bodybuilder had a unique physique and each had standout bodyparts, while still being the complete package.

Decent walking around physique

he had an amazing 1st timer's response to steroids
still had his real hair back then too but not for long
-
He had some heart surgeries too, didn't he..
-
The lack of abs was completely genetic. I'm sure he trained them as hard, if not harder, than did other bbers of that era. Everyone gets short changed genetically, in some area. I always wanted to have that Steve Reeves perfectly straight lower pec line but regardless of how much I focused on training my outer pecs, genetics wouldn't let me have it. Such is life.

no shit though the guy benched something ridiculous like 400 while he was still a teen.. somebody can verify that.. he was one strong MFer (not by GB standards, I understand)

Abs are like calfs. All genetic sure you can train a weak body part but if you don't got it you don't got it. I never trained abs and in contest shape mine are like bricks
-
if true its discouraging . in a few contests coe abs did show . in 1980 they showed contrary to popular belief
