I know Kennedy kicked him out og MMI because he was addicted to Nubain or something. Anyone knows what's he been doing the last few years? I really respect his columns and articles in the 90s......
-
I'm guessing your not refering to the columns where every second question pushed Husslefuck
-
I just remember his writings as less bullshit than the others.....
-
By the time I joined the MMI team ('93), Greg had already left and was only a sometime contributor. Him and I never much spoke. I think he thought I had taken his gig. Anyway ...
I grew up reading the guy's articles and think he's a talented guy. However, he had/has some major health issues that I won't detail out of respect for his privacy.
It's been quite some time since I last saw Greg. A friend saw him perhaps two years ago and said he was not doing well. Again, I won't elaborate.
I wish him the best. He never did anything against me.

Not nice to hear this. I really liked his writings. Any getbiggers that knows more please respond to this thread..

He looked like John Denver...
I wonder if he sang?

He looked like John Denver...
That's true.... ;D

Musclemag was the one publication I really read, back in the day. I remember Zulak saying that in his op/eds he was gonna be transparent and open about all aspects of BB'ing, read: drug use. He just danced around it, like the rest of them.
-
MMI early 90s was still the best mag to read, Ironman was 2nd...

Are you saying he is a politician such as Bill Clinton maybe knows how to escape with words of choice when the time is right?

'I did not have sex with that woman.' ;D

Anyroad he's the one writer from that era that I remember so he must have had something at least a bit different...

Were alot of his articles "rehashed" then , as a large chunk of the training articles were all Gregs through to about 97.. he used to be the editer (I beleive) in the 80s to maybe 90 - 91 then it was more articles till Bob gave him a Q & O which was great if you could look past MuscleTech promotion which in turn went against everything he had bashed over the years eg: supplements turning average joes into muscular gods when it was in fact steroids and he was always honest with this and rubbish claims of supplement companys till MT came along..
Greg had Crohns disorder and had written about it and the ill health it caused him quite a few times over the years so Im assuming this is still what his health issue is , if not then yes I dont want to know :D

I wrote a great many of the articles/profiles/editorials/interviews/Q&As that appeared during my -'93-'96 run at MMI. A lot of Greg's pieces were already written and ready to go. He was quite prolific.
His health woes are basically what you have heard/read. Poor guy was hit with some harsh realities.
MuscleTech, began by the then-manager of the flagship MuscleMag store, Paul Gardiner (he was mid-20s at the time, I would guess), made Paul a multi-multi millionaire and began to disolve much of what made MMI what it once was. The bullshit with that company and its products is beyond imagination. I was there for it all, too. A TOTAL sham.
Gardiner made millions off the backs of the ignorant and gullible. In my estimation, it's equal to blood money. I don't wish him well.

Did they have a backstock of articles from Greg? I began buying MMI back in 99 or so and continued for a few years, with every issue having a Q & A article and more articles written by him through the magazine.

Yes I remember , he was the first test study "lol" for hydroxycut, with a clearly photoshopped stomach..
In alot of the earlier mags there was an advert for MMI franchise stores and he is there as a skinny kid reading one of the magazines in one of the stores pretending to be a customer..The Guys a fraud and the only thing MT has done in my eyes is ruin the best BB mag ever.
I know who you are now - just put your user name and surname togeather plus first name *click*
One of your peices was a trip to the mecca and getting to train with Tom platz plus others etc etc :) 8) - those mags are the only ones I have ever kept, have boxes of them.. the rest were full of shit and got chucked ;D
-

As I say, yes.

Yep, that was Paul in that first ad. He was on the gas and had to get out of shape, so he'd go every day to Wendy's down the street and eat tonnes of shit food. I was with him for many of these jaunts. Guy'd borrow money from me. Once he got fat and hadn't lifted for weeks ... and he put cotton in his cheeks and jammed out his stomach ... he shot those pics.
Then he immediately went back on the gas/Clen and began lifting again. Then the "after" pics were taken.
(A lot of folks like that piece I wrote about my first trip to Venice. Glad you like it, too. Cool.)
MuscleTech and Paul have been the worst thing to have ever happened to Bob and MMI, in my opinion. Gardiner holds his ad money as bait and makes Bob give more and more for no gain to MMI and Kennedy. I am always a friend to Bob and HATE what that slimeball Paul does. Without Bob and MMI, MuscleTech would have amounted to NOTHING.
Paul should cut Bob a cheque for 10 million, no questions asked, and be thankful the man believed in him.
When all those ads were written there was no product. NONE. Kovacs, as well, should be written a cheque for a few million.
Gardiner's an ungrateful jackass. Last time I saw him he acted like I was a flea and not worthy of his time.
Pure trash.
-
As I say, yes.
I just remember YEARS, very numerous in quantity, of articles. Just seems like a lot from the time period you gave till the time I started collecting/finished collecting.

The BEEF thinks Greg died.
THE BEEF

zulak was a great writer, the reason why many bought MMI
he once wrote an article on his own illness, if I'm not mistaken, it was the same as Francois' ailment, collitis..? I believe he wrote it due to Francois' diagnosis, and to explain how difficult it is to live with
Fortress, thanks for your insight into the matter, why did Bob Kennedy allow his magazine to be owned by MT? it became one big ad for MT, with even zulak selling out/being exploited in his fake q&a
I realize all mags went that direction, with weider pushing his stuff in his mags, MD pushing their company - twinlab, even ironman became a catalogue, but MMI was the one mag everyone knew to stand their ground

MuscleTech doesn't and never did "own" MMI. But I get what you're saying. My guess is Bob was tired of fighting to keep his magazine alive and saw MT as a chance to feed into the growing supplement market that was seeing new millionaires every day. Also, for some reason he seemed to like Gardiner a great deal. Like he viewed him as a golden child or some shit.
MuscleTech was really gaining momentum at MMI headquarters towards the end of my first run at the mag. Paul even used my office computer afterhours to write those initial ads. It was all so sickening. The experience is one of the defining moments of my now-deteriorated view on the bodybuilding media/subculture.
I was asked soon after my firing (because of a misunderstanding that was later cleared up. It's a long story and involves one of the more slimy individuals to have ever crossed my path ... and this is saying a lot, trust me) to write advertorials for MuscleTech. I very emphatically said NO.
It also wasn't long after I left that Kennedy's son was gravely injured in a car accident and, shortly after that, that his wife committed suicide. Horrible, horrible thing.
Paul Gardiner now, as I say, is a bigtime ungrateful arsehole who uses his financial clout to manipulate things at MMI to his advantage, seemingly forgetting all that Bob has done for him. It's disgraceful. And what with the editorial now basically run by those ex-Weider knobs, the magazine has become just another faceless "professional" bodybuilding publication.
Kennedy and Johnny Fitness, the awesome one-time editor-in-chief, are awesome guys, despite Bob's peculiar ways ( ;D ), and deserve a lot of recognition for all they've done for bodybuilding. Of course, the "sport" is now going to hell in a handbasket, but ... yeah.
Bob and I have had our differences, but I also know there is a mutual respect there, and I will always consider him a friend. I think he knows that, if he needs something, all he has to do is ask. He has always been a champion of my talents and abilitities. And Mr. Fitness is a true original, as well, who I ALWAYS have time for. One of the most intelligent, funny and honest men I will ever meet.
When it was on top, NOTHING in the print bodybuilding media could touch MuscleMag International. It might not have been as, again, "professional", but it was the best and most original voice in the culture.
The modern supplement industry has all but destroyed what once was. I really believe this with all my heart. In so many ways.
Paul Gardiner and his SHIT products can fuck off to hell.
Hey, Paul! Cut a cheque to Bob, Johnny and Kovacs, right now, asswipe! It's the LEAST you can do. Make them out for millions, you prick.
-
Fuck I didn't know all this stuff...I stopped buying MMI late 90s. Can't get them over here anyway. Plus these mags are extremely expensive here. A MD costs 12,50 euro's I think at the stand, that's over 17 bucks...
-
Fortress... Are you the MMI guy who had couple of squatting pics in there back then?
If i remember it was in one of those gossip pages and sometimes mentioned " their own gym rat "
or something along those lines?
-

Probably. Bob put some of me lifting in there from time to time.

Fort, thanks for posting this inside info!
I used to love reading MMI (and your articles) in the early-mid 90's, but stopped as soon as all the MT stuff started to appear. PG is a greedy scumbag with no intergrity. He reminds me of Bill (buttplug) Phillips, although I though Phillips was worse because he was a BBer, then became a sellout in order to appeal to a wider audience (ie. more earning potential). Funny how people view Phillips as this great, helpful guywhen he is really just an arrogant, phony, greedy mofo. I met him a few times during MetRx's heyday and I wanted to punch his jaw loose.
-
thanks Fortress
its sad shit that, kennedy and johny fitness started the rag from scratch by their bootstraps, and the mag had character
did you go on to write for other publications?

During lunches, all Gardiner ever talked about was making millions and how much he worshipped Bill Phillips. So funny you should mention Bill. Paul lifted weights but he never gave two shits about it as a sole passion. It was rather a way to have a nice build so he could score dumb chicks at bars. Often he would bang some girl through telling her how awesome she was, how much he cared for her, etc. and then TOTALLY avoid/ignore her when she came knocking wondering what was up.
The guy is ridiculous and lame no matter how you slice it. And to think I was once his friend. Of course, the friendship didn't last long. Thankfully.
-
thanks Fortress

Bob and Johnny are awesome, as I say, and they pulled off a minor miracle in getting MMI off the ground ... and having it survive for SO long.
I edited Peak Training Journal and an online website, Virtual Muscle. Both now defunct, sadly. I have written off and on throughout the years but everything is so goofy now it's hard to even care. T-Nation basically asks for 52 rewrites and then, if they accept the piece (which is 50/50, at best), take approx. 8 years to send you money. And it's shit pay, too. Fuck it.
MMI would use my stuff if it were still Bob and Johnny calling the shots, but the ex-Weider knobs hate my guts and won't have anything to do with me. To them, I represent the "old" MuscleMag. And I am not one of their cronies from the US, either. Fuck it.
Very recently I almost became editor for Muscle Insider, but its owner, Scott Welch, a former top dog at MuscleTech (well, well, well), and I just cannot seem to see the world (business, etc.) eye to eye. I've know the guy since my Pitbull Gym (Toronto) days, when both of us had hair (ha, ha), but we are two VERY different people. He's all business and I am all passion (and warfare).
My balls are too big for most in this industry.
-
MMI was one of the first muscle magazines I read over here in Holland. For some reason a local stand had it, almost all of the others didn't. I liked the old geezers like Grimek and Gironda, also likes Dave Fisher even wrote him a letter and got an answer.... :D.
Zulak was a favourite too. I remember an article about Ronnie after he won the World Championships "naturally" and early Bob Chick stuff long before he turned pro.
I stopped buying MMI around late 90s....
-
Probably. Bob put some of me lifting in there from time to time.
Cool, I remember those! Gossip pages were the best back then. Preinternet and all...
Didn't Zulaks column change at somepoint? I remember him giving advice for having more sex and other shit.
Once somebody asked what to do cause this girl had wanted anal fisting in their first date.
Gregs classic answer - " Wash your hands! "
It was a great mag then for sure. Later I even noticed that large part of swinsuit/lingerie pics were leftovers
from the earlier shoots. They just used them again.
MuscleMags Lingerie and Swimsuit issues used to be special :o

Yeah, before I worked at the mag, I loved the gossip sections.
Greg's columns definitely changed. Between MuscleTech whoring, his hair-removal crap and attempts to be more edgy, they came off mondo lame.
-
They once had a pic in the gossip of Berry Demeij holding a garden hose, so that it looked like he was pissing. I remember there were a lot of complaints by people who found that disgusting... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Pick up any BB magazine today and do you think that you'd remember something from it 15+ years from now?
No.
-
Robert Fortney.....I used to read your articles online eons ago........good shit bro!!

I used to train and hang out with JOHN RUTSY ( used to drum for RUSH ) 1 I wonder if we ever crossed pathes in the late 80s early 90s ? trained at MACs GYM and GOLDs when MARSHA and ERIC used to own then . Worked at one of them for awhile in 1988 !
-
It was awesome that MMI had a 160lb guy who looked like he was probably on the sex offenders registry giving advice about scoring with women and getting huge.
I don't know if him and bob kennedy understood the effects of putting their pictures at the top of their advice columns
-
Thanks for all the background. I loved reading MMI in the 90s.
I remember a great historical article (maybe early 2000s) about how the mag was started, its history and its anniversary.
It also wasn't long after I left that Kennedy's son was gravely injured in a car accident and, shortly after that, that his wife committed suicide. Horrible, horrible thing.
Man, I didn't know about his wife, that sucks. Didn't he lose another son or daughter in a ski accident, or was it only this son in the car accident?
I haven't picked up the mag in over a year. Is Kennedy still involved?

Remember Zulaks articles very well, he had to use steroids for his medical condition. To regain strength after chronic and serious illness. He was very open about the effects of steroids and the difference they make. Once he wrote openly about his experience with synthetic growth hormone. If I'm correct he got it for free from a dealer. Very informative to read about such things from someone who used it himself, an had the ability to write about it in an entertaining and eye opening way.
Final MMI's I read he as mentioned here had some sort of erotic advice column? With a woman writer? (Or someone (a man) at MMI with a female name? Michelle Musselle or something like that :)
In my opinion all BB mags suck, full of crap about supplements. They are way too expensive (here in Holland anyway) and way too extreme for the major audience. I'm surprised that they are still around. What can they possible add to the web?
Zulak as I remember was one of the very few people whose articles were honest and filled with valuable information.

Johnny Fitness also didn't exactly look as if he worked out five times per week :)
(He appeared in hydroxycut ads of articles about that stuff if I remember correctly?) Didn't look photoshopped to me at the time)

Cool! Rush and Annihilator are my two favourite bands! John's dead, I assume you know. He played on the first Rush album, Rush, but was let go soon after when it was obvious his health was deteriorating ... and his preference for style was firm in a basic and straightforward rock manner. Rush, with Neil Peart, went on to essentially invent what has now become known as progressive metal and hard rock.
How was Rutsey? Nice guy?
I heard he had gotten into bodybuilding for a time many years ago. Likely crossed his path and didn't even know it was him.
Mac's was a friggin' AWESOME gym. It was like something out of a comic (ha, ha). And Mack is a semi-legend in Toronto because of it. When he closed the place Bob Kennedy wanted to buy a lot of the equipment. Don't know if he did.

It is beyond tragic. I remember going to Bob's house for parties by the pool and his son, who was a youngster at the time, running about. And his then-wife was always pleasant. She jumped in front of a TTC subway, from what I know. Couldn't handle the grief. Bob had his son taken care of 24/7 at his house by a nurse, but the young man died not too long ago. One can say it's for the best. He was never going to recover and was seriously brain damaged. Bob did what he could. He has nothing to feel badly about. He loved his son.
Bob is remarried to Tosca Rena and his daughter is fine, as far as I know. It's been a while since him and I spoke. Last time was at that last Toronto pro show/expo. I was sitting in a corner and he came over to say hello.
Perhaps it's time to give him a buzz. As I say, he's always a friend. Him and Johnny Fitness. Those two are lifelong friends and, let me tell you, sitting at a restaurant while they chat is an amazing and fun way to take in BB's history.
P.S. Bob is still involved, yes, but, last I was at the offices, lets the new boys do their thing and doesn't interfere all that much. Too bad. In my opinion, what made MMI was Bob kennedy and Johnny. Mr. Fitness has been essentially kept out of the major day-to-days and this is a huge shame. No one can put it together like that man can. And I have never been in the company of another human who can make me laugh like Johnny. An hour with him is enough to burn off several hundred calories through hysterical laughter.

The long curse. I won't recover.

Oh, yeah. Those dudes still muck about with the weights, though. They're links to a time when BB was SO much better.

everything from the MMI offices was auctioned off about a month ago. thousands of magazines ( even old Weider mags) and tons of memorabilia. i found out about it the night before it happened and almost flew out last minute to be there.

everything from the MMI offices was auctioned off about a month ago. thousands of magazines ( even old Weider mags) and tons of memorabilia. i found out about it the night before it happened and almost flew out last minute to be there.

Greg says that Cory Everson didn't know what the Weider Principles were. :o
Mike Francois didn't know the name of an exercise (bent-over dumbbell raises). ::)
Hilarious! ;D

those guys were the greatest. Met bob several times in the eighties. Very approachable. First time I met him he said..."great build! Equipoise? Aww just kidding" that time he was talking with Johnny Fuller. Remember him? Anyway where were their offices. Wish I knew about the auction. I'm close to Canada. If it was near me I will kick myself for not knowing.
-
FYI - Greg didnt use Nubaine. From a source - "Bob fired Greg because they got into an arguement about Bob's various sexy exploits, for not re-embursing him $700 for a trip to New York to cover the Olympia, and for stealing an article he wrote and putting it in one of his books."

Close to Canada? Well, Canada's gigantic, but ... the MMI offices were in the Toronto area, which is Southern Ontario.

These I do not buy. Bob wasn't like this, AT ALL.

Any news about Greg AD 2016 ?

Gosh, yes, I'd love to know how he's doing.
As always, I wish him the best.

Rob, you've must have known him... Was he cool, or "other" ??

WOW! I just reread this topic from page #1 and would like to thank Fortress for the information he and others have provided.
I've been involved within he bodybuilding , powerlifting, and olympic lifting games since the days when most of you were not even born and many times I think of myself as an obnoxious know-it-all regarding the lifting of heavy things only to discover that I have a hell of a lot more to learn but not enough time to do so.
I've never paid too much attention to the supplement business and the principal characters involved within it, so thanks for this info once again.
I had the honor of meeting Bob when he came to Hawaii as a guest of Marijo and Hanu and I'm too damn old now to even recall the year that that meeting occurred but it was on a cattamerran off the coast of one of the neighbor islands.
Our conversation was brief but it was a real pleasure meeting him.
A year or two later we had a long distant telephone conversation in an attempt to set up a photo shoot with Tony Breznik, but IronMan was shooting Tony in California that week but if my memory is still in tact, Bob set up a photo session for Tony while was training at Gold's Venice.
Just wanted to thank Fortress and back up all the great comments regarding Bob Kennedy.
PS.... Can anyone even recite just one of the Weider Principles that Cory was unaware of?
I sure as hell can't.

Greg Zulak?? Oh man, he's semi-retired and doing just some consulting work. He turned 63 a few months ago
-
By the time I joined the MMI team ('93), Greg had already left and was only a sometime contributor.
Wasn't there some scandal or notoriety involving his brother at some point?
-

Like I say, I was in Greg's presence many times, but he always seemed to not wanna talk with me. I made attempts. It's my feeling he held it against me that I was there kinda filling his recently-vacated role. However, whatever went down between him and Bob, happened long before I arrived on the scene.
I've always been a fan of Zulak's work and championed his contributions.
The first time he strolled into the offices, I remember being like, Holy crap! It's Zulak!

Marjo and Hanu are fantastic people. She's seriously one of the sweetest and most gracious women to ever be involved in the bodybuilding scene.
As far as the Weider Principles, stuff like super sets, giant sets, quality training, progressive overload, etc. Most of his "principles" were known much before his time, but Joe, ya know?

Who's brother? Paul's? All I know is, he's dead. Was kind of a simple guy who didn't have much going on, as I recall.
-
Greg Zulak's brother.
-
Could someone give Zulak a sticky thread on GB to post on..... 8)

Greg Zulak's brother.
Know nothing about his brother.

Greg Zulak's sister.

FORTRESS! I am in total agreement with you regarding Marjo and Hanu being fantastic people.
I will also say the same regarding Jeff and Cory (Everson) when they were together many-years back.
I've lost contact with Marjo and Hanu many years ago and would like to email them if you have an email address. I assume that they are still in Hawaii.
The last time I spoke with Jeff (Planet Muscle) he had sold his Topanga Canyon mansion and was planning to settle down half the year in Hawaii and the other half in a place which I have forgotten.
The last time I saw Cory she was mid way through a seminar attended by a few hundred people and I walked in quietly but she saw me and excused herself from the podium so she could come off that stage and give me a big hug.
I'm no one important but that hug felt damn nice but a bit embarrassing cause everyone in the audience was probably thinking , "Who the hell is that guy!?"
Great to se that you have also been involved in this game for so any years.
As for ZULAK contact ... Thanks for your help,PRINCESS, but I signed up and received his training 'book' but I am really more interested in seeing if we both have similar memories of the history of this 'game'.
It woud be great talking to him as I think we have both seen the growth of bodybuilding from two different perspectives.
If you could send me his personal email address, I'd be glad to contact him.
Thanks, ALL..... stunt
