After what allegedly happened to “Victim 2,” a boy estimated to be 10 years old, in the same room where Penn State football players shower, it’s near impossible to keep reading the grand jury’s report. By “Victim 8,” numbness turns to anger.
You want to scream at the traumatized graduate assistant coach in 2002 and janitor in 2000 who saw and didn’t stop it, according to the report released by the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office. You want to grab hold of and shake those who reported the crime only to their superiors, washed their hands of responsibility and then let it go, treating a kid’s life as if it were a football that slipped through their hands.
Wise: If allegations are true, Penn State and Joe Paterno deserve blame
Grand jury report (Caution: Contains graphic descriptions)
Former Penn State assistant accused
Most of all, you want to have an audience with one of sports’ most endearing icons, Joe Paterno, Happy Valley’s homespun saint, and ask Joe Pa, repeatedly, “While you were regaling everyone with sappy tales about meeting your wife 50 years ago over ice cream at the local creamery in State College, Pa., did you have any idea what your longtime defensive coordinator was doing in the company of young boys?”
If the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office is to be taken at its word — if the sad, sickening details of alleged sexual abuse of young boys by Jerry Sandusky are true — a once-immaculate program thought of as beyond reproach is now close to beyond redemption.
Paterno wasn’t charged, but if Sandusky is guilty he would be guilty — just as Penn State’s athletic director and a university vice president, who were charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse on Saturday, would be guilty.
They would all be party to a worse crime than any crooked, pay-for-play booster at Miami, Ohio State or even SMU ever committed: guilty of protecting a program before a child.
You can’t read the 23-page grand jury report and come to any other conclusion; Penn State football and its pristine reputation apparently superseded the alleged sexual assault of a young boy — perhaps as many as eight young boys — over 15 years by Sandusky.

"At approximately 9:30 p.m. on March 1, 2002, a Penn State graduate assistant entered what should have been an empty football locker room. He was surprised to hear the showers running and noises he thought sounded like sexual activity, according to a Pennsylvania grand jury “finding of fact” released Saturday.
When he looked in the shower he saw what he estimated to be a 10-year-old boy, hands pressed up against the wall, “being subjected to anal intercourse,” by Jerry Sandusky, then 58 and Penn State’s former defensive coordinator."

I see this touched a nerve. Perhaps you look back fondly on those highschool memories where coach would sit you up on his lap and fondle your genitals after practice, just like your daddy used to do after playing catch.

Hey, I bet there has NEVER been a point in your life where you could beat me in running of any kind, short distance or long, or swimming.
If both of us did one of those so called Ironman Triathlons or a Decathlon, you would finish so far behind me, if you would even finish at all.
How about that for athleticism?

nah. my solution to this is the simplest. give him 5-10 years, no protective custody, general population.
i know, on the surface it doesnt seem harsh enough. but the homeboys generally dont take kindly to these sorts. guy will probably kill himself after the non stop train that gets pulled on him...assuming they dont just kill him.

That guy is one sick SOB. Disturbing situation: repeat offender, consistent pattern of behavior, superiors kept minimizing the allegations and distorting the stories to hide the truth. Anyone and everyone who knew about this guy (AD, President, JoePa, etc) needs to be fired with the serious consideration for jail time. They all had opportunities to stop this behaviour in 1996 and 2002 and did nothing appropriate enough to stop it. The sad thing is, these are the only 8 victims that we know of, or that would testify or that came forward for this report. There are probably even more out there.

How can they keep him? I have a few buddies who went to Penn State and have wives from Penn state and love Penn State, but this falls under Joe Paterno's fault too. That asshole was suppose to be the next head coach at Penn State. >:( >:( Dirty fucker should be killed. >:(
It is sad that this very well may be, and frankly should be the end of Joe Pa's coaching career. At the same token, you don't have to get very far into the report to know for certain that he, and everyone else who had been reported to, or had seen something, should have reported it to the police.
This is definitely a black mark on Penn State, and they certainly could have handled it in a very different manner when they should have, in which case there would have been a momentary sensation, but on longer term appreciation for intergrity.

This column pretty much speaks for me on the horrendous revelations coming out of my alma mater, Penn State. (I have a masters in lit there) If you have missed this, the bottom line is that one of Joe Paterno's top coaches is charged with serial rape of young boys, including one incident in the Penn State locker room (allegedly a favorite place for him to anally abuse his victims.) After the eyewitness account, Penn State's reaction was to allow the already retired coach to keep his honored emeritis position, but banned him from bringing his prey to Penn State. This arrangement was fine with Joe Paterno and even approved by Penn State's president Graham Spanier. Though the law requires reporting child abuse to the police, this was not done. And Penn State gave no public indication that this guy, with a foundation involving young kids, was anything but a pillar of propriety. The coach was free to continue his abuse elsewhere--and, according to the attorney general, he did. Oh, and two high Penn State officials are being charged with lying to a grand jury about all this.
I have met Graham Spanier and previously felt he was an impressive leader at a great school. So I'm dumbfounded that his reaction to this is to express support for the officials charge with lying. This is only the beginning of the repercussions, and I think that plenty of alums are like me -- demanding answers, accountability, and tough action. If the board of trustees doesn't act, it should be the governor.
One bizarre note to all this: the coach in question, Jerry Sandusky, published an autobiography a few years back, telling how great he was, especially in helping kids! It was called "Touched." A telling note is that besides the normal edition, there was a leather-bound edition, obviously for those who fetish-ize Penn State football. That's the nub of this--worship of a big-time sports skews the values of great universities. But rarely do things get this far out of whack.

Did they wait until Paterno broke the Div I win record to break the story? The report says Sandusky knew about the charges for three years?
-
Sandusky is the main freak. He knew about the crimes for decades, because he was the one fucking the little boys.
The coverage the story is getting the more it appears that Joe Paterno KNEW about everything and did nothing.
-
How does it fall on Paterno? From what I've read, he reported the one incident he knew of as soon as he became aware of it. Even the grand jury report abstained him of any involvement.
I'm surprised, to say the least. This is definitely something you'd expect from a place like Michigan, not an upstanding university like Penn State.
Sandusky did what pedophiles do. They target at risk kids who have an unstable home environment, no close parental support or supervision, and a deflated self esteem. They go willingly and they don't tattle. Sandusky did it using the lure of Penn St football, gifts, and his own "charity". There is nothing worse.
Curley and Schultz are darn near as guilty and their cover up resulted in other young lives being changed forever. Paterno is testifying against Sandusky and isn't being held liable but for me, he failed to do a very basic thing and that is to protect children when made aware of an incident by an eye witness. I honestly hope he has lost sleep over what he didn't do and the results of it.
This story puts all the other payola, cheating, booster, agent stories into perspective. Those are bad and need to be handled properly but crimes against an innocent are far, far worse and Penn St will have a mark on their reputation, perhaps permanently as people really begin to understand what happened. I am not and will not take shots at school when it comes to a dirty fucker like this. You might hate Michigan and that is fine with me, but this is sick son of a bitch.

It's already starting and next should be Joe Pa.

this goes on in more places than people think
-
I actually think the state will have a hard time convicting them on the perjury charge. It's basically their word against McQueary's as to what he said at the meeting. :-\ :-\
I think the lack of response to the McQueary accusation, regardless of whether he told them what he told Paterno (that it was sexual, but was not specific) or what he told the grand jury, is a firable offense. The full response was to ban Sandusky from bringing children on campus, which they admit was unenforceable. So they did nothing. That's according to their own grand jury testimony.
-

"Joe Pa" should have been gracefully shown the exit door several years ago...and it has nothing to do with this scandal. The man is a legend, but he is a 120 years old, for Christ's sake! ::)

Sandusky wrote a book called, "Touched" :-\ :-\

2002 wasn't the first time this had come up with Sandusky. In fact there were some accusations before 1998. The '98 incident actually sparked and investigation and there is a police report. From the outside it looks like they let Sandusky retire with a "farewell tour" year in 1999 with knowledge of that incident/accusation.
And what about JoPa? Are we to believe that he didn't know of any of the previous accusations or the investigation about his DC?
-
Paterno will not survive and Penn State will clean house. If he wasn't JoPa, he may have gotten hit with a perjury charge as well.

I think in most of our countries no one gives a shit about American football and therefore could have never been left out of team...
I've tried it once though (well, a kind of variation i think). In military. Ended up as a big fight after one guy ran full speed towards fatso, hahah that was great ;D ;D
Never played it again.

I wasnt allowed to play football, being that I was on the Vasity soccer team from when I was a freshman. I always wanted to though.

What kind of man(Joe P.)hears this info, says something to the higher ups and just lets it be. Sounds like a lot of covering up going on at Penn State. Also sounds like they're trying to "protect" Joe P as much as possible. But gut instinct tells me that Joe P just may have been more of a part to some of this horrible shit. Hard to believe he is that weak of a person that he would just let it be and still work with the guy all those years. Something don't add up. I always thought he was a creepy dude hiding behind those glasses.

Lead story on the ESPN/FoxSports/etc talk shows.

Sandusky has not denied anything, which is what any good, crotchety old man would've done when accosted by reporters at his front door.
-
Paterno did testify against Sandusky!

Paterno will be gone by Friday. The story is full page/lead every where.

Shaping up to be the biggest college sports scandal of all-time.
Those that are found guilty should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

46-years of coaching, not to mention any kind of positive Penn St. legacy, down the toilet by his complicity in this awfulness. What a maroon.

I read the grand jury transcript and Paterno had a large part in this cover up. After the grad assistant witnessed Sandusky raping a 10 yr old boy in the shower, he went to Paterno's home and told him what he saw. Paterno turned around and described it to the AD as "fondling or something of sexual nature". He could have stopped this whole thing, but was too selfish in protecting his own legacy. Just sick.

So Paterno will claim the Grad Assistant did not describe the actual events to him in a manner that would have made him to go to the police. All for 409 wins.......sickening.
