Title: Christmas Music
Post by: Princess L on November 11, 2011, 11:35:55 AM
When should radio stations and retail establishments start playing Christmas music?

Halloween is way too early IMO

I agree, they come and commercialise far too early.

We do Halloween (sort of) here too in GB, then a bit of Diwali, then Eid, then we have full-on fireworks night on November 5th and that's when I feel one ought maybe start thinking about the end of the year, but certainly not till after this weekend which is Remembrance Day.

I'm not discussing my plans for Christmas till it's December and even then I'm not confirming them.

My favourite hymn is "O Come All Ye Faithfull, Joyful and Triumphant"

I have to mute the telly every ad break nowadays already, as it's all that cokeacola happy shite.
hate it, it's way too early.

A couple of years ago, on Christmas Eve, I saw a neighbour of mine boisterously getting into his car.

I said oh Ho Ho Ho Darlin' and threw a snowball at him.  I said "Where are you off to?"  He said "It's either Sainsbury's or Devon, I've not decided"

(to translate, that's like:  either Walmart or Florida, I'll know when I get there...

I agree

I think I read someplace the chords / notes of Christmas music induce melancholy feelings

I think there's something to that notion

I don't dislike the holidays .. but I certainly do not look forward to them

I adore Christmas, it's just that I can only do approx 6 weeks of full-on dressing up, lipstick and mascara and sequins, cooking and boozing and partying >>>before I pass out and on the last day, finally lose my voice.

I stop at Epiphany, January 6th (the twelth day)

I take down the tinsel and vacuumup the glitter. And go to India for February.

tis the season to be jolly fa la la la

We've still got 16degrees and roses out here in London.  The leaves are just now coming down and it's splendid, truly gorgeous.  Absolutely wonderful.

This time last year, they said on the news this morning, we were covered in snow.  But this year it's not doing Winter here and flowers don't know what's going on, there's Spring flowers blooming out there.

I've pre-ordered 6 cans of £1 Silver Spray paint.  "The Holly and the Ivy"

O Come All Ye Faithful!
The text to O Come All Ye Faithful was originally in Latin (Adeste Fideles) and was intended to be a hymn, it is attributed to John Wade, an Englishman. The music to O Come All Ye Faithful was composed by fellow Englishman John Reading in the early 1700s. The tune was first published in a collection known as "Cantus Diversi" in 1751. In 1841 Rev. Frederick Oakley is reputed to have worked on the familiar translation of O Come All Ye Faithful which replaced the Latin lyrics "Adeste Fideles".

O Come All Ye Faithful: Lyrics and Music

O Come All Ye Faithful
Joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem.
Come and behold Him,
Born the King of Angels;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

O Sing, choirs of angels,
Sing in exultation,
Sing all that hear in heaven God's holy word.
Give to our Father glory in the Highest;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

All Hail! Lord, we greet Thee,
Born this happy morning,
O Jesus! for evermore be Thy name adored.
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing;
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.

We don't have Thanksgiving here in the UK, nor do they in the rest of the world, it's a totally US thing.

So explain:  you eat a massive Turkey at the end of November, then another one again at the end of December?  I've never figured it.

We here have "Harvest Festival" in September:  where everyone takes their bumper crop of fruit and veg and a few cans of soup and tinned toms to the church for the poor?

Surely Christmas doesn't start till after your Thanksgiving?

If it's Christ-centered, I like it all year round.  If it's like Jingle Bells or something, then mid to end of November is good :)

Well-put.

I don't mind a smattering of tunes after Thanksgiving.  One of our local stations started early this week, but it's not as bad as last year when they started on 11-1.

One station I used to listen to (before their unforgivable format change) would, on the day after Thanksgiving, begin to have every 10th song a Christmas song (mixture of traditional, newer, and novelty).  Then, as Christmas got closer, it got to every 5th song, every 3rd, song, and so on, then 100% Christmas songs all Christmas Eve, and Christmas morning.  Then, for some reason, at noon, they would play a 3 hour marathon of different versions of "The Little Drummer Boy" (SERIOUSLY??)  then back to regular music.

Fair enough, but then that means there should be no Christmas music until after Christmas Eve eucharist...Advent is a penetential season, after all.   :-\

What cracks me up about this song is that at the :29 mark, I know she says, "Later we'll have some pumpkin pie..." but it almost sounds like she says, "Later we'll have some f***in' pie..."

Makes me want to take up drinking again, just so that I can drunkenly drive an SUV through a playground for handicapped orphans.
