LAKERS’ DEAL FOR PAUL DEAL CLOSE

UPDATE 6:03 p.m.: Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the Hornets are informing teams that Chris Paul is headed to the Lakers in a deal for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom:

The Hornets have started to inform teams that they’re sending Chris Paul to the Lakers for Bynum and Odom, league sources tell Y! Sports.

Whether or not this removes the Lakers from the Dwight Howard sweepstakes remains to be seen. They still have Andrew Bynum to work with, if they were to pursue such a deal.

But Kobe Bryant and Bynum with Paul running the show keeps the Lakers among the elite and favorites in the Western Conference.

PACKAGE DEAL?

UPDATE 5:58 p.m.: Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that free agent small forward Josh Howard and coveted big man Nene could be a package deal, depending on where the Brazilian center/power forward signs:

Wiz free agent SF Josh Howard is attracted to signing with team DEN FA C Nene signs with, source tells Y! SA, Chi, Den, NO, Utah, NJ in mix

BREAKING DOWN THE DEAL

UPDATE 3:47 p.m.: David Aldridge reports Caron Butler is heading to the Clippers, reportedly for three years/$24 million. Butler was considering offers from the Nets, Bulls, and Spurs, but chose the up and coming Clippers instead.

Also, parameters for a potential three-team deal appear to be in place that would land Chris Paul in Los Angeles with the Lakers. According to Aldridge, the deal would look like this:

Lakers get: G Chris Paul

Hornets get: F Luis Scola, G Kevin Martin, G Goran Dragic, 1st and second round picks

Rockets get: F/C Pau Gasol

Note: The deal is not done. Sources indicate while the Lakers and Rockets are comfortable with the deal, the Hornets are still making inquiries about Paul with other teams.

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Thank you Tayshaun Prince.

Thank you for doing your business quietly and without rumors swirling about your future. Thank you for bringing a measure of calm to a process that has been anything but for so many. And congratulations on four more years in Detroit for a tidy $27 million.

Now back to the trade rumor craziness that has had all of our heads spinning today.

The truth is, we don’t have enough hands that could type fast enough here at the hideout to keep up with all of this craziness. The rumors are flying at a wicked clip. and the official start of free agency is still hours away.

What we know, as of this minute, is that the New York Knicks have come out of nowhere to lead the pack in the chase for Tyson Chandler, per reports from both Ken Berger of CBSSports.com and . Of course, this could complicate the Knicks’ pursuit of Chris Paul (unless they have another move up their sleeve) and deals yet another nasty blow to Chauncey Billups, who could be on the move for the second time in 10 months due to circumstances, one way or another when all is said and done.

Then there is that SI.com report confirming the discussions of a three-way deal between the Rockets, Lakers and Hornets that would send Paul to the Lakers and allow the Lakers to hold on to Andrew Bynum, but only so they can do more business next. Chris Mannix of SI.com added via Twitter that:

Lakers pushing hard to make Pau/CP3 deal. If they can close, would offer Bynum for Dwight and whatever bad contract ORL wants to dump.

TNT’s David Aldridge added the Pau Gasol to Houston portion to round out this latest development.

Good luck trying to make sense of all the different information, seeing as how it changes every few minutes. How did anyone keep up with all of this stuff before Twitter anyway?

Stay tuned. Things can only get crazier before the start of training camps tomorrow.

Weird move by the Lakers, I don't think this makes them a better team on paper.  The only reason they were great was because of their massive frontcourt and 2/3rds of it's gone now.  They must think they have a pretty good line on Dwight too.

The city is still messed up and they are worrying about a basketball team.  Fuck the hornets.  They have the saints which go hand and hand with the city.  Boston was offering Rando or whatever his name is and two #1s but I guess Paul turned down that trade.  Anyway, fuck the hornets.  I hope they move out the city.  Can't rebuild with a fucking basketball team.  Dumbasses!

Gasol, odom are gone, who are the bigs? Bynum and walton?? WOW

CP3 struggled last year, he had a great game 1 in the playoffs, Kobe is on the decline, but if CP3 and if they manage to secure Howard can play in sync it should be less stress on Kobe and LA should be on top.

Bynum is also gone, along with Walton.

only prob is CP3 cant play defense, and rebounding will be a huge laker issue.

This is a great move by the Lakers. Its obvious that Dwight H(superman) is going to sign with them next year. The team is going to be unstoppable next year. The Heat can have the title this year in a short season, but LA is going to be the team to beat for many years after they sign superman.

Whats also awesome is we are about to find out how phony the Kardashian/Odom marriage is. Odom is going to disappear and watch how fast the divorce comes for the tranny...Remember where you heard it first.

as for the Miami, well if they dont win this year watch the big three be broken up, lebron will be shipped with his non-closing ass.

Lakers will get this done, they cannot go into this season with this current roster. Ron Artest is fucken useless, Gasol is good, Bynum is just a airhead, Odom is to busy smoking weed and making reality shows.

Howard seeking a trade to the Nets, so lakers can only hope for the Paul trade to come to fruition

I don't feel bad for the Hornets. Not in the least.

CP3 could have left with LeBron, Melo, and Bosh, but he signed a two year contract extension to show his commitment to New Orleans, and they rewarded his trust in the organization by..........?

Denver constructed a team full of crazy people (K-Mart, J.R. Smith, and Birdman), that always imploded in the playoffs (surprise, surprise), and ended up getting the better deal in that trade, so no one should feel badly for them.

Cleveland screwed themselves over.

They said basketball wouldn't work in Toronto. They were right. The only reason that team exists is because Stern feels bad about what happened with Vancouver.

To extend this to the Big 3 in Boston.

Seattle had a number of years to build a team around Ray Allen, but all they did was draft horrible player after horrible player, and further compounded their issues with a myriad of bad trades and signings.

PP could have left, but he stayed.

Minnesota had 12(?) years to build a championship team around arguably one of the 5 best players of the post Jordan era, and they did nothing.

Fucking Lakers trying to pull a fast one before the CBA is even signed.  They thought they could catch the NBA with their pants down knowing they were too busy with everything else and get Paul on the team but Stern the sly jew fuker figured it out and stopped it.  But now fucked over Paul because now any effort to trade him can't happen or it will seem like the league colluded against the Lakers.

The thing is, even if the NBA tries to 'force' CP3 to go to another team besides L.A., they cannot force him to sign an extension, so he'd be able to do whatever he wanted next summer.  By blocking the trade, the NBA is totally screwing the Hornets, cuz they won't get anything at all when he leaves in 6 months.  With the trade, at least they'd be getting at all-star.

Correct. So, i do not understand the blocking of the trade when he will sign if they block trade. I mean, the NBA owns the Hornets and it would be better to get something, rather than nothing.

because he wanted to increase his price on the market before the next season his contract being about to expire. It could be considered by some as being an oportunist who has in fact few consideration for the team itself. I prefer players who show heart every single game from the first to the last of the season.

Correct. So, i do not understand the blocking of the trade when he will sign if they block trade. I mean, the NBA owns the Hornets and it would be better to get something, rather than nothing.
Same here. Sounds like they are screwing themselves.

I had to bump this, cause i booked it.

The laker are in deep talks with the Hornets and Rockets again to secure Paul..it will happen.

it's about damn time dude gets considered toast once for all... glass man..

btw i see a similar future for bynum, skilled and big yet too fragile to last long in the nba even on shit loads of drugs and with the help of the best medical staff.

I'm sad for odom, as much as you can be sad for a multi millionaire who s whining cause he has to move to another location...to get paid more millions playing fuckign basketball...  dude sounds like he has the mental age of a 12y/o. "you know what i mean"  ::) But hey at least he s genuine about his love for the team and almost seem down to earth compared to others.

I been to L.A, its a shithole too, but his new found family is there, the locals like him..but trades happen all the time, its really part of the business, but regardless Lamar is just very sad and emotional about it...I can understand his stance on it, also Kobe commented "its the nature of the beast" kobe had a clause in contract and cannot be traded, its easy for him to say.

the thing is who would want lamar after this emotional episode, is he going to actually put 80% effort with his new team???????

True. odom is either hit or miss, when not 100% motivated he just becomes a scrub.

Pau to the rockets is also unfucking beliavable after all he did for the lakers. I guess the stories about his break up with GF and kobe s wife being involved might have been true; hence the reason why he wants to go away from the place for a fresh start. I guess he s going to replace yao?

What Pau did last year in the playoffs is uncalled for and unacceptable...What he did is absolutely nothing...The whole team was pathetic minus Kobe. He can't do everything himself...Lamar plays when he wants Bynum...don't get me started on that 7'1 dipshit. and Fisher is old...But still IMO two big fellas at 7'0 and 6'10 is not a fair trade for a point guard. I don't care how good Chris Paul is.

they want paul now and howard next... that was the point of the whole thing... Everyone knows it.

Pau won the lakers rings before ruining last year's playoffs, but it's not as if it was his only fault, the whole team lost its glue for some reasons they did their best to keep secret. Private, personal bulshits stories between players ruined their team spirit. All empires collapse at some point. And always from the inside.

Yep! Kobe can only get older, i guess we never want to quit on a superstar, he is human, he did have his knees fixed in the offseason, if he can have a little spring in step this year then its great, how old is kobe?? 33? if he can just have a better shot selection he would be even more super.

as for Bynum, his finished, nothing but trade bait..his terribly built hence the injuries.

Kobe has 2 years max, its one thing to be healthy but the amount of games his played, then his age (which is old for basketball) his quickness will be fading, the younger jocks will find it easy to contain him, the accuracy of his shot will be long lasting, but he needs to be accurate first......shit..maybe kobe is over the hill.

CP3 is a great marquee name but maybe its a year late to pair him with bryant.

http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2011/12/14/paul-to-clippers/?ls=iref:nbahpt1 (http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2011/12/14/paul-to-clippers/?ls=iref:nbahpt1)

Hornets agree in principle to trade Paul to Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers, in a potentially franchise-changing trade, have finally reached a deal with the New Orleans Hornets to acquire four-time All-Star guard Chris Paul from the New Orleans Hornets, sources tell TNT’s David Aldridge. The Clippers will send promising shooting guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, second-year forward Al-Faroqu Aminu and a 2012 first-round draft pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves that is currently unprotected to the Hornets.

The deal makes the Clippers a potential powerhouse in the Western Conference after almost three decades of being the NBA’s most laughably bad franchise, and shows the pull that third-year star forward Blake Griffin‘s presence has in luring marquee names to play there. With Griffin, Paul and newly signed small forward Caron Butler, the Clippers now have their own dynamic trio to compare with Miami’s “SuperFriends” of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, and New York’s new Big Three of Amar’e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and center Tyson Chandler, acquired last Saturday from Dallas in a sign-and-trade deal.

In the end, the Clippers abandoned their position that they wouldn’t include both Gordon and the unprotected first in the deal. The Hornets wanted five assets from the Clippers; the only one Los Angeles retained was second-year guard Eric Bledsoe.

But the Clippers still have dramatically changed the look and expectations of their roster, with the anticipation of the brilliant Paul throwing alley-oops to the high-flying Griffin already leading to the sale of around 1,000 season tickets in the last week, according to a league source. With Paul, Griffin, Butler and re-signed DeAndre Jordan taking over for Kaman at center, the Clippers could have one of the most athletic starting fives in the league.

Paul, according to sources, has committed to picking up his option year for the 2012-13 season, giving the Clippers at least two full years with Paul and Griffin together.

For New Orleans, it’s a reset for a franchise that has not been able to stablize in recent years. Gordon, who averaged more than 22 points per game last season, is a top-notch two guard prospect. And the Draft pick may be especially valuable this year, as the 2012 Draft promises to be one of the deepest in recent years. With their own pick as well, the Hornets should get at least two young prospects to put on the court next season with Gordon and Aminu. The task now is to sell rebuilding as a promising concept for a fan base that committed to buy 10,000 season tickets before this season.

The NBA, which owns the Hornets, was adamant that in order to trade Paul, the Hornets had to get back a number of young assets that would both allow them to rebuild quickly and to be more palatable for potential owners who would keep the team in New Orleans. Aminu is 21; Gordon does not turn 23 until Christmas Day, and Kaman is 29.

It’s likely that the Hornets will flip Kaman, a former All-Star who’s in the final year of his contract and who would be in demand by many teams looking for a quality big man, by next summer at the latest for additional assets.

Paul originally was destined to go to the Clippers’ glamorous fellow Angelenos, the Lakers, as part of a three-team trade between the Lakers, Hornets and Rockets last week, but after the teams had gotten close to agreement, the NBA stepped in and killed the trade. In that deal, the Lakers would have gotten Paul, the Rockets would have gotten forward Pau Gasol and New Orleans would have gotten forwards Lamar Odom and Luis Scola, guards Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic and a 2012 first-round pick from Houston.

But Commissioner David Stern — after receiving withering criticism for getting involved — said the trade was rejected for “basketball reasons.” Several outlets reported that the league had been swayed by the concerns of small-market owners who didn’t want the Lakers to get another superstar player like Paul.
