Title: What's the dealio with Intermitent Fasting?
Post by: anab0lic on December 08, 2011, 06:35:05 PM
16 hours without food/protein?  Fasted workouts?

Seems like a great way to lose a bunch of muscle to me...

I think TA does this.  Have never seen a pic newer than 6 years old of him so can't comment on the effectiveness.

I have been doing it for a few years now.  You won`t lose anything.  You will probably gain muscle and lose bodyfat whilst improving your overall health.

I've read the blogs and grabbed the concept, wonder how wine and stuff fits the equation.  If I workout at noon, that kicks off my feeding window of 8 hrs.  Does that eliminate a couple glasses after 8 o'clock?

your body would adapt to it like it does any other "diet", it's still all about calories in vs. calories out.

Things that would be an issue for me is to not over eat during feeding hours and not to eat during fasting. Would like to give it a shot but if you're not strict with it I think you might be worse off. For me carb cycling would work better since there's more flexibility throughout the week. Only one way to find out how it works though and that is to try it for yourself.

IF is not new though.  I read about it years ago when I studied Caloric Restriction and Anti-Aging/Longevity.

it only works the way it's supposed to with slin, gh, gear, peps, etc. look up info by datbtrue, not on here, but other boards. he has his own board too, but it's private. it works, but like i said, you NEED to use slin. it is awesome for fat loss, quality muscle gain, overall health, and longevity.

It's definitely useful way of eating, depends what your goals are.

I'm in my off season now so I only use IF on the days I don't train or when taking time off from training. I found his protocol for early morning fasted training wasn't the best for me when trying to gain mass now (delaying eating till noon) I train at 6:00am. I found it effected my performance in a bad way. Training fasted by just bracketing my workouts with just BCAA was not enough for me. On the days I train I've continue to add carbs around my workouts. Training at noon  or in the evening would probably be more conductive to this approach of eating.
That said I may move to "fasted workouts" when pre-contest comes and my focus swings to fat loss.

What I do during the off season currently is this, is working very well:

Off day (3x week) LOWER CALORIE, LOW CARB DAYS

6 AM: 10g BCAA
8 AM: 10g BCAA
10 AM: 10g BCAA
1:30 PM Eat first meal, largest of the day (100g pro/30g carbs/20g fat)
4:30 PM Eat second meal, moderate sized meal (75g pro/30g carbs/15g fat)
8:30 PM Eat third meal, moderate sized meal (50g pro/30g carbs/15g fat)

Training day (4x week) HIGH CALORIE, HIGHER CARB DAYS

6 AM: 10g BCAA + scoop creamass (30-40g carbs/10g protein)
TRAIN
8 AM: 10G BCAA + scoop creamass (30-40g carbs/10g protein)
10 AM: 10G BCAA + scoop creamass (30-40g carbs/10g protein)
1:30 PM Eat first meal, largest of the day (100g pro/100g carbs/15g fat)
4:30 PM Eat second meal, moderate sized meal (50g pro/50g carbs/10g fat)
8:30 PM Eat third meal, moderate sized meal (25g pro/30g carbs/10g fat)

The Cybergenics diet back in the 80s followed the IF protocol, along with carb and cal cycling.

Yeah I know, like france santerllini right? lol

But they did kinda pioneer IF combinded with carb/cal cycling. And their training protocol was pure madness, ie. forced reps, combined with drop sets, combined with negatives for all training/work sets :o

Yes I did the training - it was very intense but being an enthusiastic teen I jumped into it guns blazing.

I did something very similar to their training protocol, except I only did 1 working cycle per bodypart, and not the 6 to 10 cycles that they recomended per bodypart. And I gotta say that I got my best and fastest results doing that protocol, but it's just not a pratical way to train, not to mention the fact that it isn't such a pleasent way to train lol

A few times I nearly passed out cold after completeting a cycle, and my partner hurled a few different times after completeing his training cycle :-X

I`ll pray for anyone who does this diet.

The mere thought of a hardcore bodybuilder that would willingly put himself into a state of negative nitrogen balance is just way beyond my way of thinking!!  ;D

This borders on blasphemy.  :(

I was skeptical as well but I was inadvertently doing this because of a hectic schedule and I noticed that I was getting leaner.

Usually when I lean out on conventional diets I flatten out WAY before I lean out. So I was perplexed. I looked bigger. Maybe I was actually bigger. Either way, I was leaning out and staying big, or possibly growing... I can't complain. But I investigated the phenomenon and came across Martin's site again. I wrote it off the first time, but this time around I read it with intrigue.

I know people make fun of Adam for being a twink, but hey, he eats what he wants and he's shredded as a cock. He is a big smaller because he's not on hormonas, but that's a testament to this working for people who aren't juiced. I'm juiced and it works for me too. This type of eating works better for my lifestyle as well, so if I change what I do to align myself with Martin's guidelines then I get even more results. That's perfectly fine to me!

One thing I do differently is that I deviate away from the fasting from time to time. Especially if you're on trenbologna, this can be a good thing. If you're juiced, your body is a lot more forgiving. I calculate some room for epic cheats in the middle of my fast and all that happens is that I get leaner. I'm not even on GHona. Trenbologna gravy train ran out and I'm cruising and pretty much on nothing at all. Tightening up the diet and still looking good though. I'm not a fan of "diets", but this works.

Well said Dustin!  Us natural guys do exist, no hormones just = smaller.  I am not on hormones myself.  I see nothing wrong with if anyone is or is not.  I do not use for my own current reasons (won't bother to list them here).  That may change one day, but for now no hormones does change things as to diet, training, etc.

I also do some fasting but for 5 days at a time and about 4 times a year.  It goes like this:  Day 1 raw foods, days 2-4 diluted juices only, day 5 raw foods again.  I find that it helps give your digestion system a break and other parts of you can heal up.  I do come back leaner, stronger, and feeling like I have more energy.

Possibly this is something that only a non-hormonized person could benefit from...  ??? that part I don't know for certain.  I am just guessing above normal hormones (not matter what kind) will let you heal faster.  So periodic breaks like this may not be as much of a benefit?  But I dunno...
