What's your thinking on this? If the poll option doesn't fit, post your opinion.

Electric fences, moats with alligators and snipers with shoot to kill orders.
All illegals in this country who have been convicted of ANY crime= automatic deportation
All illegals in this country with clean records= can stay if they pay fines, are denied public assistance of any kind and are put in the back of the line for becoming legal
All illegals in this country 17+= Must provide a minimum of two years of military service + comply with the above requirements and then will be placed in the back of the line to become legal
Immigration from the middle east, the Arabian peninsula, and countries with known terrorist ties such as Pakistan= Minimum 10 year freeze on all immigration
That's a pretty good start-- but none of your choices captured that so I just voted no immigration.
-
Continue legal immigration. Stop all illegal immigration.

why do we need to even continue legal immigration? Do we have a shortage of people?

Why not? Koreans, Chinese, Indians, Japanese, etc, etc are some of the hardest-working Americans out there and don't really bother anyone.
This is a country of immigrants. Kind of defeats the entire purpose of it if you cut off what made it great.

I didn't say anything about these people bothering anyone. Just seems like we have enough people here. If the purpose of immigration was to build a nation, mission accomplished.
-
how about we enforce the laws we have on the books?

Nah, we have plenty of room and lot's of opportunity for those who wish to come and work hard.
Mctones - FUCK YEAH! Enforce, enforce, enforce. Unfortunately, politicians seem to avoid it like the plague.

We don't need to end immigration. We need to end illegal immigration.

this..Put a limit on how many entrants per country actually. Mandatory 4 years military service to become permanent resident. (Okay maybe not this but something similar along the lines)

I think what they have now is fine. the issue is the illegals, not the legals.
-
1.) deport all that entered Illegally (You broke the law) ....no exceptions....as over 70% of illegals are on Government assistance.
2.) Do away with Birth Right Citizenship immediately.
3.) I would also be ok with ending all Immigration for 10 years (maybe longer) as we are no longer a melting pot

End all immigration and watch our economy go to shit.
I can't believe I'm the only one not retarded enough to vote "the more the merrier."
-
* Enforce Border Security – America should be guarding her own borders and enforcing her own laws instead of policing the world and implementing UN mandates.
* No Amnesty - The Obama Administration’s endorsement of so-called “Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, will only encourage more law-breaking.
* Abolish the Welfare State – Taxpayers cannot continue to pay the high costs to sustain this powerful incentive for illegal immigration. As Milton Friedman famously said, you can’t have open borders and a welfare state.
* End Birthright Citizenship – As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be granted U.S. citizenship, we’ll never be able to control our immigration problem.

Not retarded. Our economy is shit now. You have a good point and I was also thinking of that but if we had not done so many other things to screw our economy I don't think it would be a big deal to end immigration.

Great perspective, I take back my previous post but I do agree with ending born citizenship. If the parents are here illegally, that doesn't give kids automatic citizenship

Even if our economy were prosperous right now, ending or severely limiting immigration would kill long-term economic growth in this country. Imagine this country without all of the foreign-born academics, entrepreneurs, researchers, executives, and even the cheap unskilled labor. Immigrants are VITAL to economic prosperity in this country.

Go back to Africa Howard.

Go back to Africa Howard.
I can't - their immigration policies are too backwards and restrictive. In fact, that partially explains why African economies are so terribly stagnant.

I guess that strict immigration policies and the cannibalism probably play a key role.

Restrictive immigration policies, backwards capital controls, absence of free markets, overbearing government... African countries have many problems. Unfortunately, economic ignoramuses like you want the United States to become more like third world shitholes.

Actually quite the opposite. Which is why we don't want any immigration.
And the cannibalism, civil wars, famine, diseases and stench also contribute to the African continents problems.

Why famines, civil wars, and diseases so prevalent in Africa? Because their economy sucks. Why does their economy sucks? Because most African countries limit practically anything which could spur economic growth: immigration, flow of capital across borders, free trade, free markets domestically, etc.

Actually its because of the UN, foreign aid, illegitimate political systems and a barbaric, backward, tribal culture of corruption, rape and violence.
I would place the economy at the bottom of that list. If you lived under a repressive kleptocracy that butchers all voices of dissent and does not follow the rule of law, I think that the basic needs of survival are your primary concern-- not whether foreign investors want to spend money in your hellhole of a country. Outside of pillaging the natural resources, why would anyone want to set foot in Africa?

Why do they receive foreign aid? Because their economies are terrible. Why are their economies terrible? Because their governments intervene too much in their economies.
Why are their governments corrupt and kleptocratic? Because their governments have the discretionary power to intervene in their economies.

Bingo. But that is a political issue and a cultural issue-- not an economic one.

Then it seems that we agree that Africa sucks because their economy sucks, their economy sucks because they lack free market capitalism, and that they lack free market capitalism because their political systems suck.
But that's going off topic, isn't it? What is key to free market capitalism and thus a prosperous economy? Among other things, the free movement of all goods, including labor and capital, across the imaginary boundaries set by government.
And let me tell you, if you want America to keep it's #1 place in the world in the coming decades, you need to allow free immigration into this country. Otherwise the world balance of power will eventually shift over to the likes of China and India.

It's a chicken/ egg argument. However, politicians dictate economic policy and culture is what generates the political system. Therefore, Africa is doomed to be a third world hell hole forever.
I strongly disagree with your assertion about China and India. China is one giant fraud. There is no rule of law, no creativity and the gap between rich and poor is astronomical. China does nothing except counterfeit, steal and copy from us. In addition, China has a completely non transparent system of government and a monetary policy set by a bunch of shadowy elites that answer to nobody. It boggles my mind why the world is so enamored and impressed with China. If we emulated China and eliminated all environmental regulations, made unions illegal, did business in the shadiest and most dishonest way possible and bought debt from other countries instead of being debtors, China would be nothing more than a termite cowering underneath our boots.
China is a mirage that eventually will collapse beneath the weight of its own population.
India is also light years away from us in practically every respect-- although I honestly believe India is breathing down the back of our necks rather than China.
-
I agree that China isn't close to surpassing us in the near future. Notice I said in the next few decades. In the short-run, I think China is about to face a massive depression. However, both China and India are making the move toward free market capitalism and growing by leaps and bounds. In 50 or so years, the balance of power will shift toward them.
It's simply a matter of population. China needs 1/3rd the GDP per capita of the US in order to have the same total GDP we do.
If the US wants to stay on top, it needs to encourage more people to move here.
Besides, encouraging the migration of cheap labor, academics, scientists, entrepreneurs, businessmen, and others will do nothing but benefit the United States.
