Some yes, some no. But there are many good free apps you wont have to buy many at all.
Me - i like the reader. Many free books out there and easy to download books as well.

As I have written before, the iPad is good for consuming content—it is not yet good for producing content or productivity. It is also good for playing various games. It’s a great mobile device for surfing the internet, checking your email, viewing photos, etc. My favorite downloaded apps include Netflix, Air Video, Air Sharing, Pocket Cloud (remote controlling my desktop Mac at home and office), Flipboard, and Remote (remote controlling of iTunes in the house). Favorite native app are Calendar, Contacts, and Maps. I use all three daily. Words with Friends is fun... as are the Real Estate apps.
My nieces go nuts for Cut the Rope and Angry Birds. They steal my iPad every time I visit them. I got them each their own iPad2 so now they can play games all they want and leave my iPad1 alone. :)

Just got my wife one. She downloaded an app that tracks diet, and has workout plans. Puts her on a schedule to be at the weight she wants. Also has a budget balancer. seems pretty cool, I may have to get one for myself.

My wife and I bought one for my brother in law as a present when he graduated from medical school, probably the coolest gift we've ever given anyone, and the natural genuine reaction was priceless!

Comcast launches live TV on iPad

Comcast on Tuesday began to roll out its new "AnyPlay" functionality for iPad, allowing subscribers to stream live TV to Apple's tablet. Also, Amazon launched a new Kindle storefront designed to take advantage of the touchscreen interface of the iPad.
Comcast's Xfinity HD Triple Play customers in Denver and Nashville can now access live streaming TV on their iPad over Wi-Fi at no additional charge. The cable provider said it plans to add the service to more markets in the coming months.
AnyPlay is only available for users who access the Internet on their home Wi-Fi connection. Outside of the home or over 3G, the Xfinity TV application allows users to access On Demand content, including 8,000 hours of movies and TV shows.
The new AnyPlay functionality is currently only available on the iPad, though support for the Motorola Xoom tablet is coming "very soon." Using the service, users will be able to watch a show separate from what someone else might currently be watching on the TV.
"Here's how it works... the AnyPlay device works the same as any other set top box in the home, but instead of delivering the incoming channel lineup to a television, AnyPlay delivers the lineup to the Wi-Fi router on the home network," a post at the company's official blog reads. "The router then distributes the secure video signal to the iPad or Xoom over your home's wireless network. So as long as your tablet is within range of the home wireless router, you can turn it into another television screen."
Word of Comcast's AnyPlay service first surfaced last September in the form of a leaked memo. That document said that the AnyPlay service would be limited to 10 registered tablets per home, and only one device could be used at a time to stream live TV programs.

The OnLive Desktop app which was announced at CES will eventually expand to other platforms, including the Mac. Users will have access to full-featured versions of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
With applications running on high-end computing clusters in OnLive’s data centers, the only thing that might hold off performance is the network you are on. This possibly means with today’s world of broadband connectivity, Windows applications running on the iPad may possible be faster than those running on a standard Windows 7 laptop.
For those of you who are interested in utilizing the service, the Desktop app will be available in a freemium model. The free version provides users with 2GB worth of cloud storage and the ability to use Windows 7 applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as other utilities and games on the iPad. In the near future, OnLive expects to launch OnLive Desktop Pro, which is said to be a more robust service offering up to 50 GB of storage, priority access, additional apps and other features for a $9.99 monthly fee. It also promises collaboration features for enterprise users such as sharing documents or working on virtual whiteboards.
CES show goers who have tried the app at the OnLive HQ as mentioning that there is a bit of perceptible lag but overall the ability to manipulate objects with fingers and flipping through PowerPoint presentations on a desktop miles away is pretty impressive. I for one can’t wait to get my hands on the app and give it a whirl. If it functions well, I can see it becoming successful very quickly amongst many users for a variety of different reasons. With the freemium model, it can’t hurt to give the app and the service a shot.
The best part of all this news is that the OnLive Desktop for the iPad will be available for free on the App Store starting this Thursday in the U.S. and “soon” in the UK.

you just bought a piece of hardware that forces its users to log into virtually everything, you are tracked by acceptance of conditions in order to use the apps, apple FORCE hardware suppliers to provide specific hardware that its products can be installed on- at a price premium, then they provide you with a virtually community developed operating system that you have to pay for upgrades for (OSX), or have limited upgradability (iOS). THEN, you pay twice, or more, for the hardware inside.
The good thing for others such as google have taken advantage of that and now the price of tablets is much higher than it should be, due to apple's price.
the bad thing is that consumers are sucked in and keep the price high through the hype.
perhaps the greatest marketing achievement ever. The general public have no idea what is inside and what Apple bases its products on (restrictions, permissions, tracking, locked hardware and community developed software)...if they did, they wouldnt buy this stuff.

Many of you will be interested to know that when the telephone was invented it was roundly criticized as a stupid and unnecessary invention. Many lay people—and even many so called “experts”—thought the new invention had no possible utility. Why would you want a phone when you can just go and talk to the person you want to communicate with? Why use this new invention called “a phone” when you can just write a letter to the other person? More to the point, what good is a phone when so few people had them? These and many other criticisms were leveled at the new invention. Today, even a child can appreciate the utility of a telephone.
When I hear people react to the rise of the iPad I hear history repeating itself. “It’s a toy… Why would anyone want that… I’d never buy one… It’s stupid and unnecessary… it’s marketing hype…” ::)
I guess that's why some people lift weights and pose in thongs for a living. Clearly, all imaginations are not created equal. ;)

You're wrong, thinking the iPad wasn't a necessity has nothing to do with imagination. I love technology, and I'm an early adapter for a variety of products, read the tech blogs, know what's on the horizon with phones, tablets, etc....
It still doesn't negate the fact that even though the iPad has been around for approx two years, it's still not a necessity. Because that was my point. Not that it wouldn't be fun, creative, and have practical applications. My point is it was something that nobody really needed, which is still absolutely true today.

Had my first real experience with one over Christmas when staying with relatives.
I enjoyed using it a lot - much more than I expected to - but ultimately left wondering what the point is. I'm interested to see how it develops though and how much of an 'essential' thing it turns into.

OnLive is actually pretty fucking cool! It allows you to play console games on your tablet or phone (or even PC)... I tried a few games on my Xoom 2 tablet and the games were soooo crip and smooth! I was really taken back cause I had such low expectations and that wasn't the case!!

Dell plans to launch first 'consumer tablet' in late 2012

Moving on from its failed line of smaller Streak-branded tablets, Dell reportedly plans to sell a full-fledged "consumer tablet" to take on Apple's iPad in late 2012.
The Round Rock, Tex.-based PC maker confirmed to Reuters at this week's Consumer Electronics Show that it will take on the iPad and other Android-based tablets with its own offering later this year. A company official said they are taking their time to get to market because so many who rushed have failed against Apple.
"You will see us enter this market in a bigger way toward the end of the year," Dell Chief Commercial Officer Steve Felice reportedly said. "So we are not really deemphasizing it, we are really being careful how we enter it.
"When you are talking about PC, people are more focused on the hardware itself. When you are talking about the tablet or the smartphone, people are interested in the overall environment it's operating in. As we have matured in this, we are spending a lot more time in the overall ecosystem."
Felice would not confirm what operating system Dell plans to utilize for its forthcoming tablets. The ill-fated Streak, which maxed out at 7 inches, relied on Google Android, while tablets running Microsoft's Windows 8 are also being shown off by other hardware makers at CES this year.
"We like Windows 8, but we continue to develop with Android as well," Felice told Reuters. "We are still going to be more choice-driven, based on the feedback we get from customers."
Windows 8 tablets were a key part of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's keynote address that kicked off CES on Monday. Rather than adding touch controls to the traditional Windows interface, as Microsoft has done in the past, Windows 8 on tablets will employ the "Metro" user interface the company debuted on its Windows Phone series.
Though he didn't reveal a preference one way or the other between Windows 8 and Android, Felice admitted the timing of the release of Windows 8, expected to launch later this year, would be fortuitous, as he feels "there hasn't been a lot of advancement" in the tablet market.
