yea, this is so lol... Just pure pandering to a State that has pride in the space program. I don't want to hear about this crap from politicians trying to score a vote. I want to hear about this kind of stuff after the scientific community, NASA and industry has said, "we need to do this for A reasons and we will benefit for B reasons." After that point, if the president wants to make a special speech, fine. But Newt talking about this at this level is an insult to anyone with a fraction of a brain.

"A base on every moon"....

Gingrich: Moon Could Be 51st State
BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Newt Gingrich launched a roundtable discussion Wednesday about the space program at Brevard Community College.
Gingrich surprised many with an ambitious plan that he said involves a permanent U.S. base on the moon, activities and tourism in orbit and a rocket engine capable of getting astronauts to Mars, all by 2020.
"The reason you have to have a bold and large vision is you don't arouse the American nation with trivial, bureaucratic, rational objectives," Gingrich said.
Gingrich said he thinks the moon could be the 51st state, and there could be five or more launches a day.
It's a vision that would redefine the space program, but experts said there is one big obstacle.
"It's definitely possible. I mean, we got to the moon with no program at all in nine years. Can we do it? Clearly we can. The challenge is, can we convince the Congress that this is where scarce resources need to be," space expert Dale Ketchem said.
Gingrich said he can sway Congress because that's what he did as House speaker and during his 20 years in the House.

I agree. Although I would like to see it done through the private sector, like how virgin airlines is doing those space flights. America needs to continue research into space, not a dumb idea at all.

It was a spontaneous newt move, that he's legendary for. These loose cannon moments are why some people say he will do poorly against obama.

I dislike Newt from twenty years ago,...but he is right on this...The United States has benefited from every dollar spent on space...
I am furious at Nixon for canceling the remainder of the Apollo program...The United States needs to regain the momentum lost with the emasculation of NASA in the 70"s...What ever the cost...because it will be recouped.

Dreams and nothing else. What company would spend the money to create a moon base and all that goes along with it if there was no profitability involved? Romney was dead to rights on what he would do if an underling told him they should do that....he would fire their ass.
I like NASA, science and research. I believe we should "aim for the stars" so to speak and give it a shot, that's progress. All sorts of tech will be derived from it and our government should have a science and research arm that aims very, very high. Any achievement from it, discoveries and all the other things that benefit are worth it.
Fund NASA for the right reasons and I'm fine with it.
Spending on the welfare state and more wars is what I'm not fine with.

How will it be recouped? I much rather have America's smartest scientists working in the private sector creating things that people actually demand, not working in the government sector creating things for political purposes.
