Whats peoples opinions of the 'Gallon of Milk A Day' method for increasing strength and growth? I love milk and its so so cheap in England. I'm doing starting strength at the moment as it worked very well before but mark rippetoe seems to greatly over estimate the power of milk;

"Milk is quite literally better than steroids for a novice lifter to grow on, and no supplement produces the same effect. " lolwut?

I don't believe that but its hard to find a food or drink that is as cheap and contains the right macros like milk does.

Anyone care to offer some insight? I still wouldn't do a gallon cause that is way too many calories but I like to consume a litre of skimmed milk after the gym.

i'm sure someone will post more details but drinking more than 2 glasses of milk a day is probably not valuable as a bodybuilder...

Drinking a gallon (or more) of milk per day was popular with bodybuilders in certain circles back around the 60's & 70's.
JPM's even touched upon it several times; I think milk and peanut butter sandwiches were prime bulking nutrition.

Raw milk is supposedly even more nutrient-dense than the more common pasteurized form often sold in stores.
Many states permit the sale of raw milk, and the FDA recently legalized the transport of it into states that don't sell it.

It also seems that the most effective protein supplements over the decades have been milk derivatives, dating all the way back to Blair.

I don't know if my gut & sinuses could handle it, man.
I believe the "technique" back then was to sip the gallon over the course of the day (maybe 14+ hours), which I believe would be necessary to do something like this.

I do believe in milk's benefits, though.
The wildly popular Blair formula was a combination of whole egg and milk solids - specifically calcium caseinate.
When MET-Rx reigned supreme, the chief protein source in their Metamyosyn blend was casein; and, when they took it out, a lot of trainers stopped using it because it wasn't the same.
Finally, most of the better regarded powders on the market today are some form of milk derivative such as whey or casein - with the better blends containing both.

Depends on how young/how much weight you need to put on.

When I was 18 I drank a gallon of semi milk a day, trained 5 days a week mostly compound exercises with 1 arm day. I went from 9.5 stone to 12.5 stone in less than a year, and only thing I added to my diet (apart from eating less crap) was the gallon of milk and a small whey shake after I trained.

A friend of mine has a child w/constipation issues and said that dairy can be very constipating if one doesn't drink enough water.

About 3.8 liters are in 1 gallon.

I've always associated low water intake as contributing to constipation anyway.
Increasing water consumption is a commonly prescribed remedy.

yup...

again, I am not knocking milk... anyone who thinks it should not be consumed by adults is an idiot... but moderation is the key (as with most things)
