Title: State Inspectors Searching Children’s Lunch Boxes: “This Isn’t China, Is It?”
Post by: headhuntersix on February 14, 2012, 03:56:55 PM
http://www.nccivitas.org/2012/state-inspectors-searching-childrens-lunch-boxes-this-isnt-china-is-it/

mother in Hoke County complains her daughter was forced to eat a school lunch because a government inspector determined her home-made lunch did not meet nutrition requirements. In fact, all of the students in the NC Pre-K program classroom at West Hoke Elementary School in Raeford had to accept a school lunch in addition to their lunches brought from home.

NC Pre-K (before this year known as More at Four) is a state-funded education program designed to “enhance school readiness” for four year-olds.

The mother, who doesn’t wish to be identified at this time, says she made her daughter a lunch that contained a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips. A state inspector assessing the pre-K program at the school said the girl also needed a vegetable, so the inspector ordered a full school lunch tray for her. While the four-year-old was still allowed to eat her home lunch, the girl was forced to take a helping of chicken nuggets, milk, a fruit and a vegetable to supplement her sack lunch.

The mother says the girl was so intimidated by the inspection process that she was too scared to eat all of her homemade lunch. The girl ate only the chicken nuggets provided to her by the school, so she still didn’t eat a vegetable.

The mother says her daughter doesn’t like vegetables and – like most four year olds – will only eat them at home under close supervision.

In an interview with the Civitas Institute the mother said “I can’t put vegetables in her lunchbox. I’m not a millionaire and I’m not going to put something in there that my daughter doesn’t eat and I’ve done gone round and round with the teacher about that and I’ve told her that. I put fruit in there every day because she is a fruit eater. Vegetables, let me take care of my business at home and at night and that’s when I see she’s eating vegetables. I either have to smash it or tell her if you don’t eat your vegetables you’re going to go to bed.”

The mother added, “It’s just a headache to keep arguing and fighting. I’ve even wrote a note to her teachers and said do not give my daughter anything else unless it comes out of her lunchbox and they are still going against me and putting a milk in front of her every day.

“Friday she came home and said ‘Mom, they give me vegetable soup and a milk,’” said the mother.

“So I went to the cafeteria to make sure she had no fee and it’s not being charged to her account yet,” she continued, ” but what concerned me was that I got a letter from the principal and it says students who do not bring a healthy lunch will be offered the missing portions which may result in a fee from the cafeteria. So if I don’t stay on top of her account on a weekly basis there’s that opportunity that charges could be put on her account and then if I let it go too far then it’s like I’m going to have a big battle.”

The principal of West Hoke Elementary, Jackie Samuels, says none of the children’s parents were asked to pay for the school food. While the parents may not have to pay, it was still an expense for the school to provide the extra food.  A phone call to the Hoke County Schools Superintendent to inquire as to how much additional expense this would impose on the school was not returned.

The mother, who lives in Fayetteville, sent a statement to state Rep. G.L. Pridgen (R-Robeson) detailing her complaint. Pridgen says he was shocked to hear it. Pridgen has since learned this is a nationwide practice based on federal guidelines.

An assistant to Pridgen says the girl’s grandmother was also upset and asked, “This isn’t China, is it?”

The government inspector was from the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-Revised program at the FPG Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program gives schools a grade based on standards that include USDA meal guidelines enforced by the N.C. Division of Early Childhood Development.

The nutrition standards for pre-K lunch require milk, two servings of fruit or vegetable, bread or grains and a meat or meat alternative. The school didn’t receive a high grade from the January assessment because the home-made lunches didn’t meet those  guidelines. The mother points out the only thing on that list her daughter’s home lunch didn’t have was milk, so she doesn’t understand why the girl was given a complete school meal as a supplement.

The mother says her next step is to sit down with the principal and if nothing is done then she plans to go to the school board.

Epic. Now they're mandating what kids eat, and if they don't like what you send your kids for lunch, they force them to take a school lunch. Even if the kid doesn't eat it.

It's only gonna get worse folks.

It's getting pretty bad when the government is mandating what kids eat. And if their food isn't up to code - force them to buy a school lunch. Which is probably far worse for the damn kids than a turkey sandwich.

Police state is here guys. The government is mandating what business offer employees, mandating what your children eat - and anyone one who disagrees, well they've already branded you as terrorists, since anti government extremists that believe the government is overstepping their reach are now the FBIs new big threat to America.

As you may know, I was a teacher from 98 until 2004 or so.  THis happens all the time.

Kids will come in with just a bag of doritoes in their brown bag.  Or just a sandwich.  Instead of doing a breakdown by food group, you just give the kid a free lunch. If their lunch is incomplete, you just hand them the school lunch, and they get the best of both worlds.

This is normal.  You don't just let a kid eat dorito's for lunch because their family is too poor, lazy, uneducated, etc to provide a 4 year old with a balanced diet.  Kids learn it pretty quickly.  If the cafeteria workers don't follow the rules, they risk lawsuit or being fired.  You just don't let kids go incomplete.

So the BIG BIG BIG issue here is that the kid, who was 4, didn't know which lunch to eat?  You explain how it works, and the kid eats well for the next 14 years in school.

jeez, the stuff people make an issue over.

This whole thing about "It's up to the PARENTS what the kids eat" is the worst argument ever.

Cause SO MANY parents pack terrible lunches for these kids.

You cannot argue that a 6 year old doesn't need protein, fruits & veggies each day.
And every single day, you see lunches with Capri Sun, chips, and some shitty carb in place of the meat.

If you give a shit about the kids, you make sure they eat.  Because their mom is 21, chatting on FB while smoking pot, no job living at grandmas, and no, the kid shouldn't suffer because of that.

when it's an incomplete lunch, you give them another and they pig out.  end of story.

You are fucking pathetic. How the fuck do you even convince yourself that youre not a hardcore liberal? Jesus Christ.
Look - the kid didnt have a bag of dorritos. She had a full fucking lunch. Sandwich. Fruit. Juice. Chips. Everything except a vegetable. And they FORCED her to take a lunch after going through her lunchbag.
The issue here is the government is taking over parenting duties and mandating what kids eat.
How in the holy fuck do you turn a blind eye to this shit!?
This is violating the very basis of the goddamn constitution! Its not up the the goddamn schools to parent the kids!

GTFO of here with your bullshit. You may say youre a liberatarian, but yet every fucking thread you argue why the government should be allowed to make peoples decisions for them.
You are a fucking joke. I tried giving you a chance and EVERY. FUCKING. THREAD. you proved over and over just how pro-big government you are.
You are a fucking snake in the grass at worst, or just a moron at best. You claim to be pro liberty but yet back every decision the government makes to control citizens.

Oh, and get the fuck off of the Paul bandwagon, we dont want your kind. You are everything thats wrong with voters today.

Audrey Rowe is visiting schools all over the nation.

“Everything we can do.. to make food taste good,” Rowe told students at Elkhorn Middle School in Frankfort on Wednesday.

The USDA official from Washington, DC got a first-hand look…and taste of school lunches in Kentucky.

“I think we can make it to where one day you’ll say ‘that lady was here and I like this food now.’ That’s what I’m working on,” she said.

Taylor Boggs ate lunch with Rowe, who’s worked directly with President Obama on school lunch legislation.

“She really listened to what I said about the food,” said Boggs, an 8th grader at Elkhorn .

Exclusive: 2nd N.C. Mother Says Daughter’s School Lunch Replaced for Not Being Healthy Enough

North Carolina officials have said there was a misunderstanding when a preschooler’s homemade lunch was sent home for not meeting certain nutritional requirements, but now a second mother from the same school has come forward exclusively to The Blaze to say the same thing happened to her daughter.

Diane Zambrano says her 4-year-old daughter, Jazlyn, is in the same West Hoke Elementary School class as the little girl whose lunch gained national attention earlier this week. When Zambrano picked Jazlyn up from school late last month, she was told by Jazlyn’s teacher that the lunch she had packed that day did not meet the necessary guidelines and that Jazlyn had been sent to the cafeteria.

The lunch Zambrano packed for her daughter? A cheese and salami sandwich on a wheat bun with apple juice. The lunch she got in the cafeteria? Chicken nuggets, a sweet potato, bread and milk.

“She never eats breakfast or lunch at the school,” Zambrano said of her daughter during an interview with The Blaze. “We always wake up early and make her lunch.”

to be fair - her meal didn't include a veggie or fruit.  Don't tell me apple juice counts, we know it doesnt.

over 14 years of free lunch (or 12), that girl may NEVER have ANY fruits or veggies if this is the dialy lunch, and we know its same at home.

For many kids, school lunch may be the ONLY time they have a veggie option until they're 18 and doing their own shopping.

SO what' the problem with "hey, i noticed your meal is missing fiber, antioxidants, and any kinda real fruit veggie - you keep your delicious lunch and we'll ALSO give you this free lunch which includes the veggies your mama didn't pack.

in 12 years, that girl will be HEALTHIER and less of a burden upon the US healthcare system for LIFE if she had veggies 180 days a year for all those school years.

We get it, you dont parent your kid so you want the government to do it for you.
Some of us would like to retain the ability to parent our kids the way we see fit.

i've seen many kids go to school every day for 180 days, with doritos and a snicker bars, then they grab their free lunch.

and their parents are probably the ones yelling loudest "michelle obama needs to stay the hell outta my kids lunch bag!"

and they are right the first lady doesn't belong there - but IMO the school giving kids veggies when their bag has none is a GOOD thing.

You're on getbig and into fitness, so "the way you see fit" is probably pretty healthy.  But there are so many parents who feed their kids shit, and the US heealthcare system suffers when half of them will have diabetes in their lifetime as obestiy rates skyrocket.

You're on getbig and into fitness, so "the way you see fit" is probably pretty healthy.  But there are so many parents who feed their kids shit, and the US heealthcare system suffers when half of them will have diabetes in their lifetime as obestiy rates skyrocket.
Sigh.
You dont get it do you - the government doesnt "just" add veggies - as soon as you let them start supplementing your kids lunch - they go the next step. Next itll be taking your lunch away and mandating your kid to eat their lunch.
After that CPS will be showing up on your door if you dont comply with their "prescribed lunch"

When you start asking the government to parent your kids - guess what. They DO. Theyre not gonna be "part time parents" to just fix what people fuck up. Theyre going to take over. And all the good parents will get fucked.

How about some fucking personal responsibility for parenting instead of just saying "Shitty parents are shitty, better get the government to parent their kids"

You are not a liberatarian Rob. No matter how much you protest. Every post of your is backing up the government picking up the slack from shitty personal responsability. Guess what - theyll take the slack you give them, and then the whole fucking rope.

The government is not there to fix people's failings. Its there to keep people from fucking each other over. The moment you ask them to fix shitty peoples lives, is the moment you lose your own.

Teacher Suspended Over Chicken Nugget Incident

School district official says substituting a preschooler’s lunch was against district policy

RALEIGH — The teacher involved in “supplementing” a preschooler’s lunch with chicken nuggets in Hoke County has been suspended indefinitely.

Parents of students in the Pre-Kindergarten program at West Hoke Elementary School in Raeford got a letter from Assistant Superintendent Bob Barnes last week saying a substitute teacher would take over the preschool class until the “issue” is resolved.

It remains unclear why the teacher’s actions violated district policy. State officials responsible for monitoring homemade lunches for preschoolers have told Carolina Journal that the Jan. 30 incident that caused a nationwide uproar satisfied state policy.

The letter (PDF) from Barnes, dated Feb. 28, reads as follows:

“As I am sure you are aware, we recently experienced an unfortunate situation where a failure to follow district policy resulted in the substitution of a Pre-K student’s lunch at West Hoke Elementary School. This letter is to inform you that Ms. Emma Thomas will be a substitute in [your child’s] classroom until we can bring resolution to this issue. We are pleased that [your child] is enrolled in our Pre-K program and we are confident that Ms. Thomas will continue to provide [him or her] with a very positive educational experience.”

The mother of the 4-year-old girl whose turkey sandwich was replaced by chicken nuggets says the teacher is not to blame and shouldn’t be punished.

keep it simple.   like they did.

if the home lunch is deemed inadequate according to commonly accepted national standards, then you give the kid a 'supplemental' lunch in addition.  They the kid at least has the option.

I dont think yall realize how many parents are malnourishing their kids cause they're poor, uneducated, or just don't care.

What do you tell a 6 year old with a soda and a bag of fritos in their lunch bag?   when you see it every day, over and over?  That kid ain't getting enough protein, you know it, cause they eat that same shit for breakfast and dinner too.

So yes, there's nothing wrong with letting the kid keep his fritos, but saying "Hey, here's some nuggets or turkey in case you want it..."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Department of Agriculture is defending the use of ammonium-treated beef, dubbed "pink slime" by detractors, in meals destined for schoolchildren as part of the national school lunch program.

The Internet news source The Daily reported this week that 7 million pounds (3.2 million kg) of the product -- beef trimmings treated partly with ammonium hydroxide to fight contamination -- would appear in school lunches this spring.

"All USDA ground beef purchases must meet the highest standards for food safety," the agency said in a statement.

DHHS Official Grilled Over Preschooler’s Rejected Lunch - Lawmakers want to know why 4-year-old
Caorlina Journal ^ | 3/14/12 | Sara Burrows

RALEIGH — State lawmakers questioned a N.C. Department of Health and Human Services official at a hearing Tuesday to determine why a Hoke County preschooler’s homemade turkey sandwich was replaced with chicken nuggets.

Members of the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services wanted to know if a teacher at West Hoke Elementary School was following state law when she offered a 4-year-old girl a cafeteria tray containing chicken nuggets, a sweet potato, bread, and milk as an alternative to her homemade turkey and cheese sandwich, potato chips, banana, and apple juice.

Deborah Cassidy, director of the DHHS Division of Child Development and Early Education, also was asked whether the cafeteria lunch provided to the 4-year-old was more nutritious then her homemade lunch and if the teacher (who has resigned from the school) should have faced any disciplinary action.

Cassidy told the committee that officials from the school and the school district have refused to discuss the matter with her.

The incident drew headlines nationally, and lawmakers wanted to see what steps should be taken to make sure the event was not repeated.

Cassidy testified that although the teacher did not violate the state agency’s policy, her division would have recommended the teacher go about implementing it in a more tactful way.

“What actions has the state taken to ensure we don’t have situations where a perfectly good turkey sandwich is being replaced with a bunch of fried chicken nuggets, which doesn’t make sense to the public or to any of us?” Rep. Nelson Dollar, R-Wake, asked Cassidy.

http://www.theblaze.com/stories/blogger-could-be-thrown-in-jail-for-writing-about-his-diet/
BLOGGER COULD BE THROWN IN JAIL FOR…WRITING ABOUT HIS DIET?

What bullshit...Shit i'm beginning to think that the mainstream medical community is all about profits.  ONly drugs cure disease..

It’s the sort of story you expect to come from a third world superstitious kleptopcracy – yet it happened here on American soil, in North Carolina, thanks to good old fashioned state-level bureaucracy. Reason Magazine brings us the bizarre and senseless story of a Steve Cooksey, a former diabetic who put himself on the popular “Paleo” diet and decided to tell the world about his experiences, only to have the North Carolina Board of Dietetics and Nutrition (yes, that exists) come down on him:

This past January the state diatetics and nutrition board decided Cooksey’s blog — Diabetes-Warrior.net — violated state law. The nutritional advice Cooksey provides on the site amounts to “practicing nutrition,” the board’s director says, and in North Carolina that’s something you need a license to do.
Unless Cooksey completely rewrites his 3-year-old blog, he could be sued by the licensing board. If he loses the lawsuit and refuses to take down the blog, he could face up to 120 days in jail.
The board’s director says Cooksey has a First Amendment right to blog about his diet, but he can’t encourage others to adopt it unless the state has certified him as a dietitian or nutritionist.
It’s a distinction only an embittered bureaucrat could come up with. So long as you just say a particular diet is wonderful, or worked for you, you’re fine, but if you actually tell people to use it, you’re supplying nutritional advice. Never mind that the implication of any positive review of a product is that someone should use it.

But wait, there’s more! It seems Cooksey anticipated this objection and made sure to put a disclaimer at the bottom of every page of his website that says the following:

“I am not a doctor, dietitian, nor nutritionist … in fact I have no medical training of any kind.”
But says the bureaucrat responsible, that doesn‘t matter because he’s still trying to get people to trust him. One wonders when they will press charges against Amazon diet reviewers.

Nor is the diet in question – the “Paleo” diet – somehow revolutionary. In fact, it is a popular one with many people, nor is Cooksey the first to speak highly of it. He just happened to be the one who did it most comprehensively in North Carolina. And getting anyone to trust you without the Government’s say so down there is apparently a crime.
