Let's face it: Ron Paul doesn't stand a chance of securing the Republican nomination, while all of the other Republican candidates are simply terrible. Watching Newt, Mitt, or Santorum run against Obama will be similar to watching the Special Olympics - it'll be a race to see who is the least retarded.
And the fact of the matter is that most Americans are dissatisfied with the current Presidential field:

Could this be the year for someone like Gary Johnson (http://www.garyjohnson2012.com/front)?

It might be very well be time for a 3rd party but that will only help the Democrats in the end. A Gary Johnson candidacy would take away alot more from the Republicans than it would the Dems.

Who cares? Philosophically, Mitt/Newt/Frothy are no different than Obama: they all believe in Big Brother. All of them will shit on your civil liberties, all of them will wage senseless and unconstitutional foreign wars, and all of them will spend this country into bankruptcy. At best, you'd be choosing between who will drive this country off a cliff at 55mph vs. 60mph.
Even the so-called radical Congressional Republicans have not changed. Sure, there are a few more good guys like Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee, but by and large the rest sucks. Do you know what the House Republicans plan on making their key legislative initiative this year? It's not tax reform or entitlement reform or spending cuts... BUT A MASSIVE NEW INFRASTRUCTURE BILL. Are these guys supposed to be Republicans or Democrats? Can anyone tell the difference anymore? ???
Giving the Republicans a hell of a beating in an election they SHOULD easily win will send a signal to the Republican Establishment to shape up quick or to forget about ever winning another election again.

No thanks Howard.
The first two years of Obama were enough for me.
There are other ways to deal with this than going back to 2008-2010.

Remember the last time Republicans controlled both houses of Congress and the White House?

At least now we have gridlock. If you allow Mitt/Newt/Frothy to take the White House, be prepared for four years of spend-and-inflate.
-
Here is where your idea fails. if enough people decide to "punish" the gop, there wont be gridlock since pelosi will take back the house and the gop wont gain seats in the senate.
Hence - we go back to 2008-2010.

Who says you have to vote straight ticket?

Who says you have to vote straight ticket?
You are giving the average voter too much credit. Most wont make that distinction and will stay home.

Yes I remember, and thankfully we got Supreme Court Justices John G. Roberts and Samuel A. Alito because of it.
-
The Party system is archaic and a throwback to times when information was not avaiable. This allowed people to align themselves with general ideas. Anyone who aligns themselves with a party now is an ignorant lemming who can't make up their own minds on individual issues (the majority of the American public). You fools are all brainwashed to not be independent thinkers. Keep sipping that Kool aid

Less than 50% of voters vote straight-ticket in any given election.

Ahhh yes, thank God Bush appointed those two anti-constitutionalists!

The time was long long ago.

A third party is pure fantasy unless you change the entire electoral college and system.

A third party is pure fantasy unless you change the entire electoral college and system.
that's true. BUT
lately? anything seems to be happening. obama, in the midst of a depression, soaring over a liberal and a far right cnadidate.
if there was EVER a time in history when a level headed wise man coudl win it - THIS is the time.
and the threats by mark levin to ruin rand's career? I'm sure he can read in the bible all about punishing children for the sins of the father. thats just cold man.

:( true
-
A third party is pure fantasy unless we all stop being so lazy.
Fixed.
Let's face it, people are not motivated for a third party and all the work necessary.
Hell, you've got thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of registered Republicans in a county and what? Like 100 or 200 will actually caucus?
Then people act like their civil liberties are trounced when shit doesn't go their way during the primary season. ::)

Its because of all-or-nothing attitudes like yours that we are in the shithole we are in. Yuo dont think Bush/Delay/Hastert was better than what we have now? And, yeah, deficits really dont matter when they are only 2% of your GDP. Come on, bro, I expect that kind of crap from a liberal, not you.
-
I think Napolitano is a shill/gatekeeper.
and a 3rd party will never happen but he raises some great points

SPOT ON!!!!

There will never be a third party and there should never be one. The two party system doesnt work perfectly but it is the best there is. People make a big deal out of the fact that Washington warned about political parties, but as 33 alluded to, it really seems like the Constitution was set up for that.
-
The problem is that the modern GOP stands for nothing.

Let's see: Bush drastically increased the size of government. Bush drastically increased spending across the board. Bush increased the numbers of regulations and even added numerous very costly regulations (e.g. Sarbanes-Oxley). Bush took a 25-year projected deficit and turned it into deficits as far as the eye can see. Bush trampled on our civil liberties. Bush instituted various Keynesian stimulus measures. Bush bailed out failing businesses. And this was all done under the guise of "conservatism" and "free enterprise."
So really, it isn't people like me (who stand on principle) who are at fault for the shithole we're in. It's people like you, who compromise on their principles one election after another in order to choose the lesser of two evils.
Also, your marginalization of the Bush deficits is incorrect:
Debt exceeding 80% of GDP is a major drag on economic growth. And of course that does not include unfunded liabilities or state/local debt. So when you add it all together, it suddenly becomes surprisingly clear why the Bush years were so lacking when it comes to economic growth.
Instead of squandering his political capital on Big Government bullshit like the Department of Homeland Security, No Child Left Behind, and Sarbanes-Oxley, Bush should have focused on entitlement reform and reducing discretionary spending. That probably would have led to a Republican victory in '06 and '08.
-
No doubt that Bush wasnt ideal. Those things were bad. But they pale in comparison to whats going on now. But all you do is deligitamize the only party who can stop the Democrats when you post pictures of Cheney and his "deficits" comment, which states the liberal canaard that Republicans are somehow hypocritical for criticising Obama for his deficits.
By the way, anybody who really thought we were going to have 25 years of surprluses is a moron.
I just hope you werent one of those conservative voters in conservative districts who voted for "bluedog" Democrats in 2006. We all saw where voting for "the candidate" and "not partyline" got us.
-
:( true
why exactly is that true?

Why should we legitimize the only party that can stop the Democrats when that party is just as evil on the issues that matter as their opponents?
Again, at best, you get to choose between who'll drive us off the cliff at 55mph vs. 60mph.

way past the time for a strong third party... end of story. It needs to happen now...

Based on what issues? The more issues a 3rd party takes on, the more it will splinter.
