POCS PICS OF YOUR DECISION!!! AND WHY
-
Shawn was consistently better in terms of conditioning.
Flex had better shape. Flex only had a few good yrs, it was his shape and his "mystique" as. Chris Cormier called it, that carried him.

right but i feel shawn needed more width he was too narrow
-
Shawn was better and much more consistent .. you need to realize that flex looked good in 93..94 ... veyond that he went apeshit with oil megadises and ruined his belly too
-
Shawn hands down
-
As you can see in the pictures below, Flex was way better..........

Flex, hands down.

Flex never competed in 94, unless you count the Wrecked Mercedes Classic, where he cam in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, due to him being the only entrant.

::)
we've been down this road before. what about madeline vs kristi?

seems more interesting to me.

Shawn is one of the best bodybuilders to ever walk the face of this planet.
-
shawn ray
-
Shawn is one of the best bodybuilders to ever walk the face of this planet.
X2! I agree wholeheartedly.
-
chris cormier destroys both those guys
if i had to choose i say shawn ray seemed better proportioned to me
-
shawn looks sick there.
-
Shawn and Madeline FTW.
-
Shawn is one of the best bodybuilders to ever walk the face of this planet.
Agreed
-
i dont really think flex wheeler is was a legend like kevin levrone, ronnie coleman, chris cormier...
he was great but not up to their level of greatness
in my opinion
-
Shawn hands down
X2.
Flex had a narrow torso overpowered by his arms.
WOOOSSSHHHHHHHHH
-
Shawn is a skinny dwarf next to Flex, not even close.
-
Shawn is a skinny dwarf next to Flex, not even close.
shawn has a smaller body
but so much better proportioned
but i guess you have a point that he would get DWARFED
-
Shawn Ray. He is among the top 5 bodybuilders of all time. Maybe top 3.
-
Shawn Ray.
-
It says prime though. Sev's right on Ray's consistency. Flex '93 ASC was pretty much perfection though.
-

That was the Ninja Invitational, right ?
-
in 93 when they placed 2nd and 3rd at the olympia both were close to their best.. shawn was great but it was hard for him to beat an on flex.. i think shawn himself said something like "when flex was on he was the best"!!..
-

Yeah, that whole winning 4 Pro shows and coming in 2nd at the Mr.O your rookie yr, and 4 Arnold Classics means he is not a legendary like the guys you mentioned ::)
flex is the modern era's Sergio...
-
Shawn had a better work ethic and it showed over time (even through today). At their respective peaks however I give the nod to Flex; he simply had superior lines. Of course, today, Shawn looks better and is by far a better representative for bodybuilding.
-

he did, so that kind of kills the debate all together, given shawn said flex was better when they were both close to 100%.
x2 on madeline.
-
I liked Shawns build better. He had really good lines and shape and a well developed chest. Flex's arms overpowered his chest most of his career, big no no.
-
Waiting for Tbomz to come into the thread and say that Ruhl was better than both these guys! ;D
-
Shawn at his best in 99, was beaten by Flex who was a little bit off (and Cormier and Levrone).
For people, Shawn is liked because he was always in shape and have never given up his line to be bigger . The reality is that he was just not able to gain a lot of muscle very fast like his competitors and traduced his weakness by the wish of keeping a beautiful body.
Flex had all the strong points Shawn already had multiplied by 100 and could be as big as desired, whereas Shawn was condemned to gain 1 or 2 pounds per year and to complain about the judges.

Wes, you and Tbombz seem to have opposing views on most things. :D

That`s because I`m knowledgable about bodybuilding and he`s not. ;D

Yes Ruhl had better aesthetics because he is bigger apparently....WTF ???

Flex used a ton of oil,so that finishes any point you`re attempting to make.
-
Yes it seemed to be that flex increased his olive oil use as the 90s progressed. In the late 90s he was full of alot of olive oil + esiclene. I know Levrone also liked esiclene (shoulders + triceps).

It's fine old timer.
p.s. just don't open your mail for the next few weeks, i kind of got a little anthrax happy for a while.

Flex's lines were ruined when he went above 224ish...he looked his best in 92 at 215 and 93 at 216 and 218. Had flex not had the accident, and gained weight in smaller increments, he may have looked better at higher weights. But, he made "bigger jumps in weight", and his lower back, glutes and hams were watery due to that extra weight. Flex was Brian Buchanan with Legs, Melvin was a shorter Flex with a smaller waist and less detail. And both suffered the same conditioning symtoms.

Most of the guys who are of similar height look best at max 230. Prince (in my opinion), for example was at his best when he was around 230.
-
I know this is a minority opinion but i don't like Flex's lines....
Narrow as a cocktail stick and no chest, very dissproportinate arms.
-

Brian had better lines, thicker chest, even smaller waist.
His progression should have been more gradual granted.
-
Flex used a ton of oil,so that finishes any point you`re attempting to make.
And?
When you use drugs that make you much bigger than if you decided to lift without them, do you really gain the muscle by your own strength and dedication?
Both Shawn and Flex look like shit now they are retired so if one of them used implants or oil I don't care. They gained at least 50 pounds of muscle on drugs.
-

True, but Flex was an anomaly in that he weighed less than the majority of the competitors his height. In 97 he was 224, and Nasser was 280...in 99, he made the mistake of trying to play the Mass Game, and should have stuck to his roots, he has beaten Ronnie not thru his mass, but by his shape and conditioning...but it was too late, Ronnie had mass, shape, and conditioning in spades...
I often thought that Arne List looked better and more complete than Tom Prince.
Brian had better lines, thicker chest, even smaller waist.
His progression should have been more gradual granted.
I'll give you that.

Flex didn't ruin his line at all, he kept a small waist until the day of his last contest. His only problem was the water retention as you said and the lack of definition in his arms at the end of his career, but he had a dominant physique, much more dominant than Shawn Ray on stage.
Flex is unique in history of humanity. He could never ruin his line as he had the most perfect skeleton and the most beautiful muscle belly of all time. Even with his oiled arms and lack of shoulders and chest in 1998 (not in 1999) his structure allowed him to look amazing.

LMFAO Flex is in a WHOLE OTHER league , Shawn isn't even close

Debate over. Dorian's concubine has spoken.
That's a horrible shot btw.
Narrow all arms and no chest.

Why didn't Flex win the O in 1993? He looked a million times better than Dorian.

Aesthetically he looked better absolutely , according to the IFBB judging criteria no he didn't

No that`s Eddie Murphy.
-
Bill Cosby.
-
he doesnt look like flex wheeler at all thats why i'm asking
definitely looks a lot more like eddy murphy than flex
-
is this flex wheeler?
Brian Buchanan

Brian Buchanan.

Brian Buchanan.
I beat you by 4 secs, geezer...

Brian Buchanan
thanks
never heard that name before
it's the guy with the photoshopped looking waist :o

because he's black, i hope this helps
-
is this flex wheeler?
Think of Brian as a C5 Z06 corvette and Flex as the C6 Z06. The C5 version had promise, but the C6 version was the one that was a winner.
ND, who is the guy in the white shirt? He apparently had 23 inch arms that he would never show on camera, but Flex and others saw.

Seems his waist was actually like that....

Shawn Ray....all the way
-
Shawn Ray....all the way
shawn ray had stocky type build,,thick full muscle bellies looked and was strong for size,,got in great condition esp later in career,,,flex was build from ect/meso type and early on was shredded but was def not as strong looking as ray was more 'from the drugs'strenght,,trained like dillet looking around ect,,,like the original mike christian but these guys turned it on for show time tho.yates trained balls out all yr i bet like branch .

His lines were blurred when he went over 230, he kept a small waist compared to others, but he lost the crispness that he had at 215-218.
Also, look at Mass Construction, the part where he was training chest...he had his brother or Danny Hester pull his arms back, and he lost control of his gut...I mean it was bad...

there are offseason pics when flex had beard and was a swollen 280,,who would have thought esp the what 'flex'magazine presents the finished bber product as ripped sculpted mass 24/7...seeing him at 215 u would never imagine a offseason wheeler a watery 260 plus..he had to play size game why?
-
Watch in 1080p stfu :D

If Shawn was 5'10'' he could have been mr O for 20 yrs..... Not kiddin'.

Maybe, but if my auntie had a dick she would be my uncle. There are many "ifs" in this world.
On a more serious note, Shawn was more consistent for a lot longer but at with both at their best, Flex was in another league.

I think the key to it was what he said in a video, after his accident, he went to the 94 Mr. O with his wife and Robin Chang, Flex thought that he could never compete with those guys--even he came 2nd the yr before...he started over compensating--the weight, the oil...looking for the "magic bullet".

If Flex never crashed his car and showed up in 94 like he did in 93 he would have beaten Dorian
No oil in these calves ;D
-
Not sure who he is
He was in several scenes of the Hardbody vid...
-
96 Ac was the best i saw Flex, he had some chest thickness there, should have beat Levrone.
Same height and Shawn would win out, being a midget is a blackmark.
-
shawn was "consistent" because he only did one show a year so enough of the consistency talk, it's easier to peak for one show a year than 3 - 6
flex had more career wins and looked better when both were at their best
shawn was overrated, i don't understand how anybody can think he should've been Mr. O when there were bigger and better versions of his physique
E
-
As you can see in the pictures below, Flex was way better..........
Ideal size and Symmetry on Shawn in that pic. Nobody should have beat Shawn when he looked like this!

Only two guys that looked bigger and had great lines still apart from flex were Clairmonte and Cormier.
Clairmonte used to get completely robbed every year.
Better build than Flex.

I agree with you Shawn is overrated , the guy won just 2 pro shows big deal. He had a very nice physique but he wanted the sport to bend to him because he was a midget. He bitched & moaned about ' mass monsters ' when in fact he was one himself just on a smaller scale. Guys like Labrada were who was around his height and competed at 190lbs when Shawn was much thicker at 205-215lbs

Clairmonte beat Flex in 93, albeit a watery Flex...what was Flex's greatest attribute was the illusion his muscle bellies gave, the flow he had. Break him down, and he wasn't all that---bodypart per bodypart. Didn't have a wide back, could have had a bigger chest. Bigger legs and calves...but it was the crazy flow...
-
He beat Flex in 93
He won some contests on the circuit but never placed well at the O.

most overrated bodybuilder iof the 90's
he never should've placed top 5
too small to compete with dorian, nasser, and dillet
inferior to larger aesthetic bodybuilders like cormier, flex and of course MR. Levrone

I'll forget about Dorian, Nasser and Dillet becasue bodybuilding shouldn't be about mass at the cost of everything else.
I think he was more aesthetic than all of them tbh.
Levrone isn't even aesthetic, average waist, Delts overpower chest by a huge degree, Pec tear, no peak on biceps lacked ab detail and back detail.

lol Levrone wasn't aesthetic

Wheeler only looked good in 1992 and 1993! You are nuts if you think he looks good after this! He abused the synthol and went coo coo in his head!
Shawn Ray is a big whiner and has terrible attitude, but he was consistent and better than Kenny Wheeler! Shawn was best in 1994 and 1999. He was to small however and was always dwarfed by the great Dorian "The GOAT" Yates. Good lines and nice physique, but not a Mr Olympia physique.
-
One thing I`ll say about this thread......it makes you miss the look of the 90`s physiques! :(

1997 Musclemag, I believe this was taken in the sucession of pics where Flex was showing up Dillet. 97 Ironman perhaps? I had the mag.

-
Is the shot were Flex and Ray are both hitting the same most muscular side by side same contest?

Shawn was in the contest, I think beside him. But It was a succession of pics, where Flex was next to Dillet, Flex raises his hand, as if to say, "This is how you do it", Then he proceeds to do a MM, Dillet is seemingly half-heartedly flexing his arm and chest...Flex had a certain way of breaking down the MM pose, if you ever watched him. He does it in two phases.
This was either 96 or 97...I believe 96, as Flex had hair and sideburns, and in 97 he was bald, and Shawn Ray trained with him.
-
Is that Darrem Charles to the left of Ray..........kinda` hard to tell in that pic?
Yes, that's Darrem, back when he claimed Natural...

:)

Flex at his best is probably better than Ray, Clairmonte et cetera. I changed my mind.
Looked at his best when he balanced his chest out with his arms.
Great pic.

I have to agree.......not a flattering pic for sure. :)

aside from his abs not looking as sharp (he's not flexing them) and chest looking shallow for obvious reasons, Mr. Levrone is structurally superior even in his worst pic

There is a pic of flex doing a kneeling back 3/4 bicep shot in like 93 or 94 and he looks great. I think it is the Arnold classic. Someone post it, I'm too lazy. It should end the debate.

Left shot looks far better, much more detail and smaller waist.
