http://global.christianpost.com/news/lottery-winner-claims-welfare-im-struggling-she-says-70926

One million dollars may be a lot to most people, but apparently it is not enough for lottery winner Amanda Clayton, who is still receiving welfare assistance.

The 24-year-old Michigan native won a $1 million state lottery prize in Sept., but has remained on the state's welfare system. Reports show that Clayton receives over $200 per month in food stamps and other state assistance. "I'm still struggling," she told WDIV, the local TV station.

After being tipped off about Clayton's benefits, reporters began following her around and investigating her claim. "I feel that it's okay [to receive welfare] because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay. I have two houses," she told reporters.

This is after the television crew discovered that she had bought a house and car, paying cash for both. The station reported that Clayton received over $500,000 after taking a lump sum payment instead of annual installments.

Clayton's story has drawn the attention of politicians who are angry that lottery winners are still eligible for federal and state benefits.

"Public assistance should be given to those in need of public assistance, not those that have found riches," said Dale Zom. He is sponsoring a bill to prevent lottery winners from receiving food stamps. The bill has passed in Michigan's House of Representatives and will go to the Senate for a vote.

"I thought they would cut me off, but since they didn't, I thought maybe it was okay because I'm not working," Clayton said. She attempted to defend her actions, though and has said that she will continue claiming her benefits until she is cut off.

"It's just hard, you know. I'm struggling," she said.

The public has not responded kindly to the mother of two.

"Some people just have no shame when it comes to leeching off the government," noted Cartman, a user on the Daily Mail.

"I cannot believe that in this poor US economy when so many people are struggling this [woman] is still collecting welfare benefits after winning 500k… Worse than that she thinks she is entitle to these benefits. What is this world coming to?" asked user Nora.

A drug addict that wins the lottery just becomes a rich drug addict, then back to being a drug addict.

A million dollar is actually little money. So how do you expect this kind of losers to really do anything with it? They buy a couple of shitty houses that they can't rent properly or won't ever make any significant profit from, add a useless car. She probably spent about 40-50k for it, thinking that's not overprice without thinking that it was about 5% of the prize money and that also will lose value.

Offhand, I think they don't count it because it's special circumstance income, and a loophole never got fixed. Some states have laws like that, where if a person wins or inherits money, it doesn't count against government social program income because it's a onetime occurrence and not actual earned income.

It's done that way to protect old people and the disabled, who might get a little windfall of money, but not enough to change their life. It was never ment for something like this, but sometimes folks just get lucky, whether they deserve it or not.

I'd love to see the house and car she bought, I bet she's broke in 1/2 a year.........

The government wants us all to fight among ourselves while they are strategically stealing from the system. This story was reported for one reason and one reason only. And that's to invoke emotions. There are thousands of old people who live on land worth well over 500 grand collecting money/food stamps from the government. Every city has these older people who refuse to sell their childhood home/land even though they can barely pay the taxes on it. When someone speaks of these older people, we hear words like "that's wrong", or "so sad they have to give up their home"... Money is money...

I blame the government for giving OUR money away to frauds like this, and 100,000 of thousands more who don't need it and for freely giving it to the corporations for bail outs and studies on why hamsters like to run in wheels and ... well the list is endless. But sorry, she doesn't get a pass...

I see nothing wrong with this, if she qualifies for the entitlements then she has earned them.  If she doesn't have a job, this is not income from a job, it is one time winnings.  You conservatives can't seem to grasp this.

Don't really equate entitlements to earning much these days. She did nothing but breath air to get the money, she didn't earn it.

If you state your position is one time winnings shouldn't count, then your principle would apply if she won $50 million. It's a ludicrous position at best...

The point is, the taxes are exorbitant.

And the government has some nerve to offer 'million' dollar lottos when they leave you with half that.
It's misleading. I don't blame her one bit. The rich use off shore bank accounts and all sorts of tricks to avoid taxes that aren't available to the average idiot.
I think taxes should be eliminated period at the federal level.

But as long as they exist, she's just playing the same game as everyone else. Cutting corners any way she can.

BTW, everyone pays taxes. Even a bum pays taxes when he buys something from the store.
She didn't buy the ticket with your money; get off.

LOL the government offers 1 million dollars, then takes half of it back.
Taxing your own offer. Crazy.

Then you have super rich people that don't actually do any work, that can pay for accountants that know all the tricks to hide taxable income.

The rich and poor have a lot in common.

True. There was an opiate addict a few blocks down from where I lived in Florida. The population discovered that he was stealing car stereos to buy dope, and they tortured him to death. As they were ripping off his nails and poking his eye out, he screamed:

"I am in pain! Give me Oxy(oxycontin)! Give me oxy!"

Even as he was being torn apart, all he could think about was drugs. Truly sick stuff.

So true....so she used assistance $ to buy a lotto ticket?  WTF?!?!
If you are on assistance, the government has every right to dictate where & how that money (our tax dollars) is used...ie..food, clothes, shelter, utilities, necessities, etc.
There is so little accountability with these programs, definitely need to be overhauled.

I think Reagan once said...you measure the success of welfare not by how many people are recipients but by how many people have transitioned off assistance.

A famous body builder you all know and have talked about on this board used to travel thoughout the South Pacific using the funds he received from the Welfare Office.

He'd have enough for the plane fares and minor expenses for a 6 week vacation in Paradise with many nights sleeping on the beach before heading back home to collect more funds from the good old USA WELFARE AGENCY.

And he always said, "If they're stupid enough to give it to me, I'll be smart enough to take it!".

Some of you GETBIGGERS knew him well.

And the same shit goes on today by many others outside the BB world!

Details of this justice?

Per request:

LINCOLN PARK, Mich. –  A Michigan lottery winner was charged with fraud Tuesday for collecting food stamps and public health insurance despite pocketing a $735,000 jackpot.
Amanda Clayton, 25, was silent during a brief court hearing after spending a night in jail. A not-guilty plea was entered, and her lawyer vowed to fight the charges.

Clayton is the second person in Michigan caught with food stamps despite newly minted wealth. Gov. Rick Snyder last week signed a law requiring the lottery to notify the Human Services Department when someone wins at least $1,000.

Clayton is charged with failing to inform the state that her income had changed as a result of the lottery prize and a job. She won a $1 million jackpot on the game show "Make Me Rich!" and chose a $735,000 lump sum, before taxes, last September.

"It's simply common sense that million-dollar lottery winners forfeit their right to public assistance," said Attorney General Bill Schuette, whose office filed the charges. The maximum penalty is four years in prison.

Clayton, the mother of a 1-year-old, is accused of collecting $5,475 in food stamps and public medical benefits over eight months until Detroit TV station WDIV broke the story in March. She told WDIV that she believed she could collect food aid because she didn't have a job at the time.

The amount of money is a speck compared with the roughly $250 million that Michigan spends each month just on food assistance. Schuette spokeswoman Joy Yearout declined to comment on why the attorney general chose felony charges over a civil lawsuit or why Clayton was arrested and locked up overnight for a non-violent crime.

Outside the court in suburban Detroit, defense attorney Stanley Wise said he would ask that charges be dropped at the next hearing, May 1, when a judge must decide whether there's enough evidence to send the case to trial. He didn't elaborate on his strategy.

"They want to make an example of her," Wise later told The Associated Press, referring to state officials. "She's offered to repay the money. They haven't even sent her a bill. If that were the only issue, it would be over and done. They have chosen to exploit this for their purposes, and we have to deal with it."

Clayton declined to comment after posting $1,000 bail. Wise advised her not to speak to reporters.

Euline Clayton told reporters that her daughter used bad judgment but that a criminal case is "crap." She said Amanda called the Human Services Department about her lottery winnings but could never reach anyone.

The charges "are very extreme. ... They arrested her like a vulture," the elder Clayton said. "She didn't steal $1 million."

Clayton wasn't the first Michigan lottery winner to keep claiming public benefits. Leroy Fick, 60, of Bay County was using the food program despite winning an $850,000 lump sum prize in 2010. He told officials about his wealth but was allowed to temporarily keep his card because one-time windfalls at that time were not counted as regular income under the

Lottery Winner Pleads Guilty To Bank Robbery

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A man who once won a $19 million lottery jackpot pleaded guilty Thursday to four federal counts of bank robbery, authorities said.
James Allen Hayes, 55, who was also known as James Killen and Ceaser Killen, was indicted last October in connection with bank heists in Newhall, Valencia and Santa Barbara counties. Authorities say he is believed to be the PT Cruiser Bandit and the Seasoned Bandit, so named by the FBI for his gray/white hair.

In each heist, the robber slipped a note to the teller demanding cash and threatening to shoot if they did not comply, according to the indictment.
As part of the plea deal, Hayes agreed to forfeit a light-colored Chrysler PT Cruiser, which was allegedly used in some of the robberies.

Hayes was indicted in October for a string of bank heists between April and September in the Pacific Palisades, Stevenson Ranch, Valencia, Newhall, Carpinteria, Goleta, and Santa Maria.
He faces up to 20 years behind bars when he is sentenced and could be ordered to pay restitution of about $40,000, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Hayes was a Ventura security guard supervisor on the graveyard shift in January of 1998 when he won a $19 million SuperLotto jackpot. His ex-wife reportedly took half the jackpot, and Hayes ended up with a $6 million lump sum and a $1,000-a-week heroin habit.
When tracked down and arrested by the FBI in October, authorities said Hayes was living in an abandoned garage.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 7.

1. $6 million and a $1000 a week habit doesn't sound like he had a problem
2. I know there's some laughing here that the media thought $1000 a week is alot of heroin
