3 amazing bodybuilders here doing shrugs.  There is no better exercise for the traps than shrugs!  There are many exercises that work that traps, but they won't be the best if you neglect shrugs!

You know what one of the biggest stand out points of a bodybuilder is?  Traps.  Massive traps that push and stretch your shirt.  Massive traps makes the tie in to the delts much better as well.  Far more impressive that big biceps or big legs.  You don't need to take off your clothes to see these muscles.  This is what separates the men from the boys.

Dumbbells or Barbell works for shrugs, it's your choice.  Full range of motion, good squeeze, and heavy weight.  These are key for massive traps.  8)

hope this helps

My entire training regimen is dependant on jakes posts. Good on u jake! Any evidence to back this shrugging theory up?

How about behind the back shrugs? I do a sort of shrug/upright row behind the back on the smith machine so you can really squeeze on top. They are killer, only exercise I do for traps. Think I picked them up from Haney doing them

My genetics for trap development are abysmal. Shrugs, dumbells, barbells, hammer machine, seated, standing, backwards, forwards, squeezing and holding - absolutely nothing works.

LOL

I have included shrugs in my workout maybe 5-10 times in my entire life. Never cared about trap development but it was pretty good from just deadlifting.

Have you tried them? Ballistic pulls of any kind really fry your upper back, from the lower traps to upper traps. Insane activation near full extension.

weightlifting is good for showing off or demonstrating strength not the best for building it. It is very good for athletes though i.e fighters, hitting homeruns, football and jumping sports to learn how to explode. Also pretty good for fitness but at even modest strength it can get a little more dangerous compared to other lifts. Also prolly underrated for over weight people burns lots of calories and makes them become faster and not so slow.

i think this is true, the training is very extensive and if not on hormones it is perpetual over training if you ask me

one hour of snatches and cleans

then after that you start "leg training"

lol

one of the greatest sports ever tho

i love to watch it

Oldtimer beat me to it.  For me, hang cleans > anything else for building big traps.  Maybe I should start doing them again....

i am the same way. i have gotten a little from mixing up the reps. i go up until i reach 4-5 reps then i go back down with half the weight and squeeze out 12. its just genetics

Just out of curiosity, how many guys here that say deadlifts don't build traps, regularly pull at least 4.5-5 plates from the floor?

my mind/muscle connection with my traps was so bad during the first few years of lifting, I couldn't even flex my traps lol, the day I learned how to changed everything, had lots of improvement since. not sure what I was doing before but I certainly wasnt using my traps as the primary muscle during shrugs

maybe you should shrug at the top of the deadlift

try light upright row, lift the bar ashigh aspossible and lock those traps.

the problem is most of the time, people put too much weight on the bar and they don't get good stimulation on the targeted muscles........

Upright rows can be a major source of impingement for the shoulder

Try high pulls or general oly movements.

Actually, I'd say there's no better exercise for traps than dead lifts. Even Ronnie knew this....he didn't do shrugs all that often, but deads all the time.

Nothing hits the whole trap like deads....of course, this is why most peoples traps suck in the lower area...they don't do deads...at least rack pulls.

squat weight is not that heavy for the calves

deadlift weight is very heavy for the trap

just sayin

branch warren knocks out 20-30 reps i blieve with 500lbs on calf raises

If you really do pull at least 4.5-5 plates from the floor, I would be willing to bet that while your traps might not be enormous, they are at least developed and aren't a weak point for you.

You miss the point....deadlifts do NOT need to have something extra thrown in like a shrug......neither do squats.  You break the 'groove' you are in if you do that.

Deadlifts are one of the best exercises and one of my favorites.  Excellent for traps.  But NOTHING tops shrugs.

If you just deadlift and think your traps are big, stand beside me.  My traps would make your traps look like a natural bodybuilder and I AM NATURAL.

i understand that i was just saying that even if you do that in squats it wouldnt do shit since it really isnt that much weight for the calves to handle

either way a dumb idea

i used to do that my coach forced us to do so

looks dumb and dangerous too

The best?

No way!

When you do a side/lateral db raise, especially above *parallel* what happens to your traps?

They flex like biceps. Think about it.

Shrugs are good, but they ain't the best. A good deadlift will build traps too, but you can't squeeze them like you can with laterals. Start of with just your arms out with no weights until your lateral heads (and traps) are on fire.. then go from there.

just heavy training in general heavy benching even i feel works the traps. Nearly any movement you use 300lbs+ on does. Heavy squats deads rows your traps are kinda like your abs in they kinda keep shit stable. Traps very big strong muscle almost finds itself involved in any heavylift. SIde laterals would be more like leg extensions for the traps lol

where i train, the most neglected exercises, belive me or not, is BARBELL BENCH PRESS
they all prefer dumbell bench press, with some 140lb dumbells at times, cheating a lot with a spotter behind. when they go for barbell, what a shame, dont even 180lb they can hit for 8 repetitions without a spotter.
cry for those guys...

trouble is with these type of exercises is they are explosive and you really need to know what you are doing. show me an average guy in the gym who can do then correct? i agree shrugs and deads.
