Title: Qualifying for the Olympia 2012 - The Point System
Post by: Ron on March 14, 2012, 06:36:26 PM
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, March 13, 2012 -  The IFBB Pro League, in conjunction with Joe Weider’s Olympia Weekend, announced the creation of the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series, a points-based system that will help determine qualifiers for all six IFBB Pro Olympia divisions.

The IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series will award points to competitors placing in the top 2 to 5 of all Pro League events. At the end of the Olympia qualifying season, the five (5) competitors with the highest points totals in the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series will qualify to compete at Olympia Weekend.

http://www.getbig.com/headlines/2012/03/14/olympia-qualification-series-announced-by-the-ifbb-pro-league/

Something had to happen. Last year, during and before the Olympia, it was realized that way too many competitors were being qualified to the best and most elite contest of the year, resulting in 28 competitors just in bikini alone on stage. And crowding what should have been just the top 15-18 competitors only

The fact that more contests were held during the year, and the top three (sometimes the 4th if the top three were already qualified) were getting in created a contest with a lot of bodies on the stage. So the IFBB went to the other extreme, and passed a rule that said starting in 2012, only the winner will be qualified to the Olympia. But what started to occur is that if the winner was already qualified, or if a top competitor was going to compete, then no one thought they would have a chance even to get into the Olympia. Now things have changed.

On March 13th, the IFBB Pro League announced that they had created the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series, which will consist of a point based system which will determine who will be able to compete in the Olympia, for all six IFBB pro divisions that have contests there. This was great news to many of the competitors that saw very little hope. Such great news that quite a few of them were overjoyed at this news!

Even better news was that the announcement that the top five competitors with the highest point totals will qualify to compete at the O! Yes, we are going to see a frenzy of competitors vying for those top five positions. Now things are going to be even more exciting that we thought.
So how does this point system work… well, here we go.

If you win a show, you get nothing. No points. What would you need them for. You qualified! You are in! You can dance, jump, scream, yell, go to Disneyland, but you are definitely going to be on that stage come Olympia weekend. Also, the top five at the prevision Olympia are automatically qualified, as they should be. If you are one of the top five in the world, you can stay in the big dance without worrying. The points started in 2012, and there are varying types of tiers, depending on the contest. Here is the points system.

Tier 1 – The Arnold Classic Contest: 2nd place – 8 points. 3rd place – 7 points. 4th place – 6 points. 5th place– 5 points

Tier 2 – The Sheru Classic, and the Arnold Classic Europe. 2nd place – 6 points. 3rd place – 5 points. 4th place – 4 points. 5th place – 3 points

Tier 3 – the New York Pro. 2nd place – 5 points. 3rd place – 4 points. 4th place – 3 points.
5th place – 2 points

Tier 4 – the other IFBB Pro competitions. 2nd place – 4 points. 3rd place – 3 points. 4th place – 2 points. 5th place – 1 points

What do you think?

So in other words there is no point promoting a show unless it is right before the Olympia?

The move to cut down on Olympia competitors was wise.  Someone panicked and didn't let it play out, so hence the "qualification series".  I think the pro league will find out that nothing is going to increase the quality of these 3rd and 4th tier shows, even a qualification series.

Using this system for the 2011 season, with top 5 of 2010 mr O automatically qualifying, there would still have been 19 men qualified for the 2011 mr O.

Jay
Phil
Branch
Dex
Wolf
Evan
Ronny
Cedric
Kai
Marius
Craig
Troy
Toney
Ed

Guys getting in on points as non winners of shows or not top 5 mr O

Marcus 11
Roelly 10
JJ 9
Hide 8

I think the primary goal is to have the Mr. Olympia and any contests that are with it that weekend have a maximum of 15-16 top competitors in each division. Simple as that.

I think last year in bikini, they had 28 competitors.  TWENTY EIGHT.  Which made the show too long, plus a lot more expenses.

The reason for the point system is one that a lot of us wanted...

In the case that there is less than 15 qualified competitors for the top contests, the point system will automatically bring the number to 15-18.

No official choosing the person - it is done by points.

It is a great move, and one that will make quite a few competitors and promoters happy, as well as the fans.

Since the winner of each competition automatically qualifies, no points will be awarded for first place. Additionally, competitors placing in the top 5 at the Olympia automatically qualify for the following year.

The IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series will be effective immediately, and point totals for all 2012 contests will be included.

“We think this is a great way to expand the number of Olympia qualifiers beyond those who win contests and to build excitement for all IFBB Pro League events throughout the course of the year,” IFBB Pro League Chairman Jim Manion said. “It ensures that the best of the best will be competing on the Olympia stage.”

Points and qualifications in the IFBB Pro Olympia Qualification Series will be awarded as follows:

TIER 1 – ARNOLD CLASSIC
2nd – 8 Points
3rd – 7 Points
4th – 6 Points
5th – 5 Points

TIER 2 – SHERU CLASSIC, ARNOLD CLASSIC EUROPE
2nd – 6 Points
3rd – 5 Points
4th – 4 Points
5th – 3 Points

TIER 3 – NEW YORK PRO
2nd – 5 Points
3rd – 4 Points
4th – 3 Points
5th – 2 Points

TIER 4 – ALL OTHER IFBB PRO LEAGUE COMPETITIONS
2nd – 4 Points
3rd – 3 Points
4th – 2 Points
5th – 1 Point

Complicated bullshit

Should get a point system for judging that deduct for flaws, like obvious oil, lack of proportion, huge gut, etc

Yep - and if there are more than 15-18 competitors per division, that is too many for the elite contest.    The best of the best will be on stage!

I believe the problem lies in the fact that the organizers of the Olympia mix the shows. If the Mr. Olympia was by itself, the show would not run longer than 60-90 minutes. As it is now, they mix men, fitness, women's bb and bikini and the night show is more than 3-4 hours long, making fans AND athletes tired. What promoters and the IFBB should be focusing on is not how to bring the contestants numbers down but how to bring more people in the women's shows and make those shows more popular, sell more tickets and make more money.

Problem is, they mix the women with the men's show because otherwise not many people would go to the women's shows. Spend more time getting more women/men fans to attend the women's shows, that's what should be done.

Title: Qualifying for the Olympia 2012 - The Point System
Post by: stuntmovie on March 18, 2012, 07:36:26 PM
Qualifying for the Olympia  starting  now –

It’s my understanding that commencing this year (2012) the Olympia competitors will be qualified to enter based on a newly devised Point System.

Points will be awarded to each of the top –five IFBB Pro contest winners as follows.

No points will be awarded to the contest winner due to the fact at that each contest winner is automatically qualified for that year’s  Olympia

And the top five winners in the previous Olympia are also qualified .

The points are based on ‘tiers’ as follows: (The higher the tier, the higher the ponts for each placing).

Tier 1 - Consists of one (1) IFBB event - The Arnold Classic Contest:
1st place – Is automatically  qualified for the O
2nd place – 8 points.
3rd place – 7 points.
4th place – 6 points.
5th place– 5 points

Tier 2 – Consists of two (2) IFBB events - The Sheru Classic and the Arnold Classic Europe.

A. The Sheru Classic
1st place – Qualified for the O.
2nd place – 6 points.
3rd place – 5 points.
4th place – 4 points.
5th place – 3 points

B. The Arnold Classic Europe.
1st place – Qualified for the O.
2nd place – 6 points.
3rd place – 5 points.
4th place – 4 points.
5th place – 3 points

Tier 3 – the New York Pro.
1st place – Qualified for the O.
 2nd place – 5 points..
3rd place – 4 points.
4th place – 3 points.
5th place – 2 points

Tier 4 – the other IFBB Pro competitions.
1st place – Qualified for the O.
2nd place – 4 points.
3rd place – 3 points.
4th place – 2 points.
5th place – 1 points

Seems like a great idea but there are a couple of questions:

1, How many tier 4 evernts are there that will qualify each winner for the Olympia?
2. Can contenders increase their points by entering more than one contest?

I assume the answer to question #2 is “YES” but that coulod possibly mean that someone who enters four (4) events (for example) and placed 5th in each event would garner more points than  a contender who placed 2nd I in two events. (I lea e it to you to do the math based on the above point system.

Ron , Can you or Bob or Muscle Center elaborate on this  new procedure to determine who qualifies each year to enter the Olympia and whether or not these points will be updated on this GetBig Boaird  as the changes are made?

Thanks, Stunt

My understanding was that a bodybuilder can only really get into shape a limited number of times during the year - this is a bad idea - i think it will affect the quality of competition.

They could cut it off right there.  No one outside of that list is going to have any chance at this year's Olympia.

That's what I was thinking - the Olympia shouldn't have any more than the top twelve in the world every year.

There are already 20+ girls qualified for the Bikini Olympia, and we are only at the beginning of the season. How did these new rules work exactly in bringing down the number of competitors?

The only category they are cutting down competitors is the Men's Pro and the Women's Bodybuilding. Seems to me something is not working right. And now those of us who choose to go the Olympia, will have to sit through a 4 hour show with 15 guys and probably close to 30 bikini competitors, if the shows are combined again. Count the 11 fitness and the 13 figure competitors so far (probably 18 each by September) and we have the exact same, or close to, situation as the previous years.

Frankly I am baffled by this. Men's bodybuilding is by far the most visited and sold out show of the Olympia weekend. With less guys now competing and the same (or more) number of ladies, won't this bring the ticket sales down?

Why can't the Mr. Olympia/Olympia 212 be just in one show by themselves? Or at the very least compare the guys, give out their awards so they can go eat and not wait backstage for the women's shows and THEN go on to do the fitness/figure/bikini comparisons etc? Why force spectators to sit through all shows by combining them?
