He uses a photo as a starting point. They aren't drawn from nothing at all.

Very talented, must take forever doing that.
The hardest thing would be to achieve those whites, like the white hairs in the man's beard.
I guess he is using some sort of white chalk/pencil to do that.

I had a friend who would put a photo negative in an enlarger and project it onto a drawing easel...he would draw on the paper so that the paper with the Black and White negative projecting on it would look like a grey sheet of paper...when he would turn on the room light and kill the enlarger lamp the drawing would leap forward so to speak...
Even if that artist used a similar technique,...it is still brilliant.

The fine lines in the faces are what really makes these striking...It is a way of showing off so to speak...like when someone military presses their bodyweight over their heads.

Amazing drawings.
If you think those are good, check out Denis Peterson's work - they are just ridiculous in their realism.

Er...Yeah.
Although the drawings and paintings I make are based upon photographs, videos stills etc , the idea is to go beyond the photograph. The photo is used to create a subtler and much more complex focus on the subject depicted, The virtual image becomes the living image, an intensification of the normal. These objects and scenes in my drawings are meticulously detailed to create the illusion of a new reality not seen in in the original photo.
