Somebody is worries about all the loli pictures on his hard drive ::) - to make you a lot more nervous - the only way to destroy a hard drive so that the feds don't see your naughty picture collection would be to shoot it into space - burn it, dunk it into water, put it into a microwave, re-format it a thousand time will do nothing but make that level 10 cleared state employed nerd try harder to find out what you are hiding.
I write you in prison :-*

Overwrite all the data on the hdd with random 1's and 0's.
Use a utility to do this: dban or killdisk for instance.
You can use multiple passes, but unlike what people say 1 pass makes all the data irretrievable/unidentifiable.

your maybe fooling your average computer user with that, but there is litteraly nothing what you can do to a hard drive that could prevent the government to extract incriminating date from it.
You have to litterlay melt it.

it's a very complicated matter
i recommend destroy by fire (time tested method of destruction) and dump the remains in the ocean

You are incorrect in your statement.

Also a couple of passes with random bits is enough.

take out the platter and make it glow in the fire, then smash it, either one should be fine
-
all you have to do it bury it or though it a river or something jesus christ.
-
At recycling centers unused harddrives have holes drilled in them.

Yes you are true, low level unfrequent passes may still be retrievable with electron microscope, but very hard and costly. But then even if they could get a couple of usable bit of the hdd, the data is pretty much useless.

The simple answer is that it does not matter. A single wipe (done
correctly) will make it infeasible for ANYONE (even governments) to
recover information.
-
oxy/acetylene, cut into multiple pieces and then disposed of individually.
-
you could just...
bury it. or hide it under the mattress. or throw it out on an expressway when you're driving. all these other methods are probably cheaper and more practical though

I make an innocent thread and then you have "some" throwing in the FEDS and whatever other stuff somebody else wrote. Anyway, I've bought a new computer so I rather not have anybody fool around with that old harddrive that's all.
But I guess I'll pour some alcohol on it and burn it. As far as driving over 100/mph on the highway and then throw it out the window? Really...or drive all the way to Mississippi River and dump it in the water, or use a jack hammer to drill holes in it? Wait here's the best one was to hide it under my mattress.
:)

LOL
Funny bc it's true

I think Office Depot will handle that for you....... as long as they don't call the FBI.
