Title: thick bar (or "fat grips") holds, are they more effective than normal bar holds?

to increase deadlift grip strength


since i read about thick bar in stuart mcrobert i wanted to try

but no thick bar available at gym


then there are fat grips


but i'm scared of being scammed with a useless gimmick


anybody experience with this

if strength is your goal fat grips are a good investment

i see people use these for all kinds of exercises


but that doesnt make any sense

aren't they only for holds and deadlifts if the goal is developing grip strength or testing/demonstrating grip strength

is that pretty hard? or is hardness not important for thick holds?

We have fat bars and fat bar grips at my gym. We even have a fat bar trap bar.

Standard pipe insulation is not dense enough to use this way, although you're on the right track.
Instead, consider using foam swimming "noodles." Your hands won't sink into them as much. Stores ought to be carrying them soon.

I haven't tried them for lifting, but I think Montague is right about it's density.
I don't think I will become a fan of thick grips since my grip strength is already the weakest point when I perform deads/chins/rows/etc. As a result you can't train your back to the max. I would rather suggest DB wrist curls with palms facing up (flexors) & the same with palms down (extensors).

Exactly. I liken it to performing db presses on a Swiss ball. You're sacraficing working your chest because you're simultaneously working your "core" by balancing your ass on a beach ball.
If you want to train chest, train chest; if you want to train abs/core/chain, etc., then do that. Doing both is not always the best idea.

Likewise, why cheat your back just to work your grip more? Some trainers may like that idea, but I'd rather separate the two.

 I have heard many say thick bars have improved thier biceps most likely by forcing them to take out the momentum. And i am pretty sure wes knows as much about training as anyone possibly could. His knowledge is based on lots of real world experience to coach knows a lot to but he seems to have slight agendas what they are I have no idea though. wes's knowledge base is well more suited for average joes doing normal cycles. Unless your planning on running 1+ grams of tren or spending 1000$ a year on gh wes posts will serve your more so then anyone else's

No no, a thick bar is more appropriate when you PUSH the bar, not when you pull it.
When you pull you need a thin bar because it's easier to keep in your hand and you put less stress in your wrist tendon.

you aren't supposed to use thick bar for deadlifts chins rows

you are supposed to do grip work like once a week which includes thick bar holds (take heavy bar from rack, hold as long as possible)

Those holds makes sense in case you want to train your grip strength on a static way. Keep in mind that both hands/forearms don't have the same strength, so you might include unilateral/single arm holds.
