It's pretty damn good.
The version on their live binge and purge album is superior though.
-
No. Too much to choose from.
But this is probably the greatest.

nah, that's not even in the same league :-\

Taste, not everyone has it. :D
I used to listen to Welcome Home and the unforgiven on loop for hours lol.
It's an awesome song, i'm on a type o negative binge atm though.
-
One of the top ten metal songs of all time. Other personal choices would be "Run To The Hills" by Maiden, "Holy Diver" by Rainbow, "Paranoid" by Sabbath, "Stairway To Heaven" by Zeppelin.
-
I'd go with Fade to black or Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden. Although obviously 'best' is subjective.
-
love that track....
i've always been partial to the crue though...
-
Best Maiden track.
-
That's not how you spell Hallowed Be Thy Name

Superb one as well. Iron Maiden definitely is the best metal band all songs considered.
-
Not a fan of death metal at all (hate the constant screaming) but Sepultura was epic!
-
One is definitely up there with the greatest. The album 'And justice for all' is the one that changed me forever. It was such an epic album for me. That's the one that got me into metal. I literally wore that cassette completely out. Haha! Remember cassettes? Were getting old gents :'(
-
Not a fan of death metal at all (hate the constant screaming) but Sepultura was epic!
Yeah, epic sell-outs who went Nu-Metal to make money.

Can't pick just one greatest metal track, but I wouldn't argue against this one.

Metallica are shit.
I have to agree. One of the most overrated bands of all time in my opinion. Bands such as Def Leppard and Judas Priest are a billion times better but never seem to get the respect they deserve nowadays.

Wow....seriously??? Thats pathetic....
For me...Master of Puppets still ranks very very high as one of the few albums that has better than 75% of the tracks be kick ass....otherwise most other albums by any band suck testicles....

Metallica have never sounded this good live:

rocket, we may be on the same page with Dorian being the best but DL? really? i cant even stomach the first 20 seconds of that.

White Zombie : more human than human. I never listen to metal for the lyrics. Guitar riffs.

metallica are the ones laughing, they sell out every show, every weekend every year. there is no debating this.

Maybe Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction

The owner of Melodicrock.com constantly names Def Leppard's "Hysteria" album as his favourite album of all time. He gave Metallica's latest offering 0 out of 100 and as far as I'm aware most people including their die-hard fans agree it is a pile of crap. Def Leppard = real band, Metallica = music for anoraks.

Hysteria is one of the best albums of all time, must have been crazy when it first came out.
Metallica have got a few very good songs though i never liked their albums as a whole.
-
any track from 'Puppets beats One. One is a good song by all means, but Master of Puppets is a top ten metal album easily, as is Vulgar Display of Power, Reign in Blood, Peace Sells, but Who's Buying? I'm rambling haha.

not related to bodybuilding.
but to be fair you know nothing about metal. another metallica fan boy who thinks they are the only metal band or something.

Exactly. The dicks on here think they know everything and overlook the likes of Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, Dio, Thin Lizzy, Motorhead etc. They also make fun of more melodic bands like Def Leppard, but I have news for them. Lars Ulrich recently named Def Leppard as one of Metallica's influences. ;D

People comparing LULU with MoP or RtL or KeA...are you serious? Metallica WAS one of the greatest, we all know that.
-
Def Leppard's pop rock. Why are they being compared to Metallica?
Metallica was rip-your-face-off metal until the Black Album. They were fantastic, both live and on CD.
After that, no so much, but it doesn't negate the greatness of Kill 'em All - AJFA.
-
i like MEGADETH better
-
Iron Maiden has a list of the greatest tracks.
-
Def Leppard's pop rock. Why are they being compared to Metallica?
You're right, Def Leppard are in a league of their own and Metallica can't compare to their greatness. Metallica's biggest problem is the lack of variation in their music. It's the same with AC/DC and Guns 'N' Roses, so they're not alone in that respect.

Metallica has ~3 good songs.

Silly post.

Yeah one is good but Master of Puppets I prefer. I'd say:
Master of Puppets
Sanitarium
Disposable Heroes
Ride The lightning
Unforgiven
Seek and Destroy
Fade to black
Nothing Else Matters....
....Are all on a par or better, I love all the unsung atmospheric album track gems as well, like trapped under ice, Dyers Eve, My Friend of Misery, Metal Melitia, all of them, I don't give a fuck what people say the Black album is clearly awesome, they lost something from Load onwards, too self-conscious maybe. Like someone said Creeping Death is a contender as well!

Yep! Fade to black is definitely the best 'metal ballad' though.

Some say death metal, some say thrash metal, I say semantics, who cares ;)

Yep! Fade to black is definitely the best 'metal ballad' though.
I'd have to say that would go to "November Rain" by GNR.
-
November rain = metal? :D
-
November rain = metal? :D
Yes... GNR is in fact a hard rock / metal band.
No, they aren't thrash or death or gothic doom, but they are in fact metal.
Just like White Snake is in fact "Hair Metal".

Agreed. Anyone who says the Black album isn't metal has no idea what they're talking about. That album has the best production of just about any album ever, which is probably what turns a lot of people off....they're not used to metal albums having such good production....that and it bothers them that non-metal fans like Enter Sandman. Sad But True, Unforgiven, Wolf and Man and The God that Failed, how anyone can say that's not metal makes no sense.
I've said this before about the Load albums....they're really not that bad, especially Load. They're nowhere as good as their other albums and in a lot of ways the wrong sound for them and a lot of their fans, but any other band records Load and I'd bet it wouldn't get the heat and flack it does.
BTW, Trapped Under Ice, great track....good call on that one.
Metallica is unbeatable...true, plain and simple.
-
best metal song of all time is probably Angel of Death - Slayer , Paranoid/Iron Man Black Sabbath, Holy Diver Dio, Master of Puppets Metallica, Run to the Hills Maiden, Crazy Train Ozzy, or something like that.
-
Most in this thread have at best a modest knowledge of popular heavy metal music.
I mean, Metallica this and Def leppard that ... what the hell?
I have been buying hard rock and metal albums, cassettes, CDs for over 30 years. I average two or three per week, every week.
There is a whole world beyond Metallica, Leppard and AC/DC.
I'd suggest a majority here just shut up.

slayer - Angel of Death probably takes the title. Nothing comes close really.

Get off your horse man... People know about Maiden, Saxon, Candlemass, Chastain and a slew of fucking other metal bands that are great, but so fucking what?
The bottom line is when you look at longevity, great tracks, and a host of other things, you can not possibly say that any of those bands are not at the top of the heap.
Just because someone knows a bunch of tunes by UFO, Overkill, Sepultura, and Testament doesn't mean that the other bands are any less great.
You sound like a prick... Tossing around your "30 years" shit... You're not the only one.

some garage band w some masterpiece no one ever heard of does not fit TJE bill. Sorry bro.

Biggest prick with which you'll ever come into contact, that's for sure.
Anyway, back to the subject at hand ... I recognize that select songs from Priest, Metallica, Maiden, Leppard, etc. are bonafide classics, sure, but there have been tunes from as recent as five years ago that could easily be considered as being some of the very best the style has to offer. It's just lame to read the same 10 tunes mentioned over and over again as if there aren't groups well and beyond the biggies.
Take "Angel of Death" by Slayer. Classic song, no doubt. But it's pulled like a knee-jerk without a second's thought given to the THOUSANDS of other great classics in all substyles of metal.
-
It's a thread about a Metallica song.
No, it's a thread about whether others agree that "One" is the greatest metal song of all time.
Fuck me. Read much?
-
Seek and Destroy, No remorse, whiplash, ride the lighting, for whom The bell tools, battery, master of puppets, creeping death, et al are. Fucking masterpieces!
BUT.
Slayer still takes the cake for angel of death, reign in blood, and black magic.
-
some garage band w some masterpiece no one ever heard of does not fit TJE bill. Sorry bro.
No, not "garage" bands, but rather, groups that in some cases have perhaps six or more professional recordings to their name. Some even dozens. And as far as others not having heard them, well, judging by the "fans" in this thread, I don't doubt this one bit.
-
Whitesnake is the best band mentioned in this thread.

First, let me roll my eyes at your comment about your prick... ::)
I guess I don't see much in the past 10 years that's not a bunch of growling that no one understands.
I mean, you could go on about Cradle of Filth or Trivium, maybe, but they don't do shit for me.
Now Lacuna Coil and Nightwish are pretty good, but to go as far as to say any of them will be considered classics is a huge stretch.

Whitesnake is the best band mentioned in this thread.
David Coverdale was a raspy voiced god... Plus their blues melodies over top of power chords was pretty freaking sweet.
Definitely an underappreciated band from that era.
-
I agree with Fortress that there are a lot of metal bands that are fantastic, far superior to many of the ones named here. Metallica and Pantera are probably my two favorites all around of all time, but bands like Children of Bodom and Lamb of God are hard to beat. Bodom is just good hard metal, and LOG is just the epitome of southern metal thrash...kind of Pantera to the extreme.
I have to say, bands like Iron Maiden, Def Lep, Ozzy and Priest, these bands don't even begin to enter the same category as the four bands I just mentioned above. Sure, taste dictates a lot and everyone's is different, but the Maiden's. Ozzy, etc., none of these could be put into the same metal category as the above four.
Metallica
Pantera
Children of Bodom
Lamb of God
Sepultura
Divine Heresy
Agony Scene
Omnium Gatherum
Arch Enemy
In Flames
Scar Symmetry
That's a metal playlist of bands...real, true metal.
-
Slayer ?
-
Slayer ?
Some of their stuff is OK. I always thought they were a little generic and repetitive sounding. Just not my taste. They do have some good songs though.
Of the most well-known metal bands of that era, I'd still put Metallica and Pantera at the top....way, way above the rest. Megadeth has some good stuff too but they don't come close to a lot of those other bands I mentioned IMO.
-
yeah , rock chicks ...!

Heavy metal snobbery!? Learn something new, every day.

this shouldn't be a surprise: in the 70's, it was Black Sabbath, the 80's, Slayer, 90's, Pantera, and in the 2000's, Id say either Lamb of God or Slipknot. These bands ruled the decades as far as I'm concerned, although LOG "ruling" is a far cry, but they're excellent. And when I say ruled the decades, I mean they've left a metal legacy that will never be forgotten. Who's on top now though??

Worldwide, Children of Bodom, Opeth, In Flames and Meshuggah are probably the biggest metal bands out there right now. Got to remember, metal is a lot bigger outside of the U.S. these days but it always seems to come back around in one way or another.
BTW, through the 80's no way on this earth Slayer ruled over Metallica...come on now.

Megadeth with Cristina Scabbia ....great song
-
Pretty much the undisputed kings of metal.
Slayer overall takes the prize in my book. impact, longevity, consistency, etc.
Ozzy sold out w his tv bs, Metallica through AJFA was good, Pantera was too short lived, Maiden is epic but not hard enough, and judas priest and sabbath are close. Dio close second or third.
but Slayer is still the gold standard no matter how much others wants to cry about.
-
Children of Boredom one of the 4 biggest metal bands out there?

Yes, I'm just not too familiar with those fella's. Heard of them all, but never was interested. And yes Metallica was the staple of 80's metal bands, yet Slayer, I feel, has retained the fan base, once a Slayer fan, always a Slayer fan, and also have upheld the thrash metal/metal standard, whereas Metallica simply sucks after the black album IMO.

as far as Pantera goes, lest we not forget, Far Beyond Driven hit number 1 on the Billboard charts in 1994, if I'm not mistaken. From Cowboys' untill the last days, they destroyed arena's everywhere they went. I agree about them short-lived, but they tore the metal scene wide open, and forever Pantera will be hailed, also IMO haha.
-
what metal band is really on top now? I mean heavy heavy metal. I'm tempted to say the Black Dahlia Murder...they are fantastic...but...just thinking about this makes me sad how so many bands all sound alike now, lol.

Not disagreeing but slayer has decades of classics from black magic, capture of sin, Antichrist, to chemical warfare, to hell awaits to reign in blood and angel of death, to south of heaven, to war ensemble and seasons, to 214 and stained of mind, to god hates us hall, to jihad and cult, to hate worldwide and unit 731.
Slayer has a legacy of brutality spanning DECADES!!!!

Fuck sakes. This is a joke, right?
Listen, I dig CoB, Opeth, In Flames, and Meshuggah (the recent effort, Koloss, is massive), but to suggest these are the biggest metal bands at the moment is pure lunacy.
Metallica outsells 'em all and Maiden packs asses in seat the world over like nobody's business.
What planet are you from?

You missed understood me. Of course Metallica is bigger than all those bands. My point, of the modern era bands those are the biggest out there...that doesn't mean I like all of them, I hate Opeth even though they're extremely talented and I'm not crazy about Meshuggah but them Bodom and Flames are the biggest modern era metal bands IMO...still not Metallica level though.
-
For those who doubt the raw awesomeness of Metallica and Pantera, find me one other show in metal history that is this bad ass. Over 500,000 people, some estimates have it at 750,000 and when you see the crowd that will be obvious. These videos are unreal!!!

What does metal have to offer? Seriously. Where is the variation and sensibility in the music of those bands? I feel quite sorry for people who listen to that music 24/7. How bored, how sad and how depressed they must be.

Metallica is top 5 metal band ever - so many genres in metal though and its all good

Ironically, people talking about longevity, impact, legacy, "quality", audience breach and they dont mention the only 1 Metal band that unites all that
By the snob standards of the fat fuck here then there is too much Metal at all to ponder. I personally love Morbid Angel, Centinex, At The Gates, Pentagram, Anathema, Cannibal Corpse, Mayhem and Emperor....but they dont have it all.

You do realize a lot of heavy metal, actual heavy metal not stuff like Def Leppard and Van Halen but real metal is the closest thing to classical or symphonic music out there in any genre....a lot of it's musically identical.....it's just played faster and with distortion. These are often some of the most talented musicians on earth.

You're absolutely right. Actually, even though I originally stated that I don't consider One to be the best metal song, or even one of Metallica top, it's still great. The melodies are beautiful.
I like Rocketswitch's BB posts a lot, but I don't think he's listened to the genre enough to make a valid point - he's generalizing. At least that's what I'm interpreting from the last bunch of his posts.

Agreed....if you start counting bands like Hatebreed and Godsmack, or Five Finger Death Puch, this is crap and not pure clean metal...Hatebreed is the worst....it's the same repetitive D chord over and over and is about as generic as it gets. The true metal bands, it's a different story like the one mentioned above in-regards to classical music.

Almost anything by Judas Priest when Halford was in his prime would have to be up there IMHO in terms of a good bet for "ultimate metal" but then that's "classic Metal"; these days there is a million varieties of Metal.
-
Most metal is total shite. None of those bands can compete with the likes of Def Leppard, Queen, Whitesnake, Van Halen, Mr. Big etc.
So you're now "that old guy" you and your buds despised back in high school, huh?
And the cycle continues ...

I have always felt prime Priest is the benchmark for all contemporary heavy metal. What Halford, Glenn and the boys were creating in the '70s was SO far ahead of its time, it's nutty. Fuckin' wizards of the metal class.
But then they wrote and recorded shit like "Living After Midnight". ;D
Funny, the band's biggest hits are my least-fave JP moments. Seriously. Every live album/VHS/DVD I own of the group (and there are many) included that shite tune, and I HATE it.

Exactly, LOL.
I'm 44 and I'm aware that my default taste is set on a 30 year old water mark. Still I manage to find interesting current stuff that "rocks" like Disturbed - a great band to lift to...

Yeah, "Turbo lover" is probably not one of their finest moments LOL!

I'm 42 and continue to buy, weekly, new CDs by bands that have been together for "only" several years ... and in some cases even less time.
I always cherish the old standbys, but I also never want to stand still with my likes and not discover badass new groups.

Yeah, "Turbo lover" is probably not one of their finest moments LOL!
Ya know, I dig the song, but yeah, it's a little less than the band's best work (to put it mildly). Although when the guys bust it out live these days it sounds one heck of a lot better without the keyboard swashes and overbearing synth guitar tones of the original.

This rocks more than any of the songs posted so far in this thread:

I think Nightcrawler and Electric Eye are their top 2 old tracks.
Judas is Rising is killer... There is a live performance on YouTube. I will find it. Amazing.

Judas Priest... now there's a band that needed to call it a day years ago.
