I remember that contest. He came in second to Robby Robinson in the Universe contest. Regarding the 1980 Olympia he didn't come in 2nd. He came in 5th. I don't understand all the HIT guys saying he should have won it. Standing next to a 75% Arnold he looked bad.

I will say this about Mentzer. His training had a big influence on me. Back in the day I would cut out any article written by him. I put it in a photo album and to this day I still have it. I think I have the most complete collection of Mentzer articles that I have ever heard of.

He, along with anyone who tried to come up with the ideal training system for hypertrophy, was wasting his time and ours. To me GH15 has done more for the sport wih his real talk about hormones than Mike Mentzer ever did with all of his many volumes of nonsense.
Froma physique point of view he was short and blocky with stubby arms, wide hips and a big butt. He did look good in a few photos when he was at his all-time best. However, he wasn't at his all-time best in 1980 and thus got smoked by the real greatest of all time. The universally recognized King of Bodybuilding, Arnold.

Had Mentzer not gone nuts, it's entirely possible he could have improved enough to win the Olympia after 1980. Samir would've smoked him in '83 and Haney would've eaten anyone but Arnold alive from '84 on (including Arnold after a time -- say, 1986 or so), but the '81 and '82 Olympias were wide open.
Oops! Except for, you know, Franco for the fix winning in '81. Sorry :-[
