Assuming those photos were taken from the rear of your garage I can't say it qualifies as a gym. Dumbbells are impressive. One 'cardio' machine. Laptop in 'office' area. Only Goodrum's gym in the sky is smaller!
Amazing that the Coach makes money out of this emporium.

I guess because Joe doesn`t have a specially designed spaceship or two lying around in his gym to train biceps with, that it must suck!! LOL :D

:D
Good setup.....all blue collar stuff. Especially like the tires....so much you can do with those along with the rope

:D
Wow Coach, that's not even up to Brain Dopson's Arlington standards. How in the hell did you get investors to front the money? Didn't you post something along the lines of $100k to put your gym together? Man, there is a lot of slick shit going down in Southern Cal, and you're possibly at the apex. Anyway, I hope your HS kids are getting athletic scholarships since their folks probably pay you a lot more than LA fitness' $40 a month. Man, Santos and crew are down here in San Diego, and they can hook someone up for $70 a month. Are you that much better?

Why? I'm not training to be a MMA professional like Swede ::). It's all fitness and general health like my LA Fitness membership. The point is, Coach was posting some big numbers on here, and he just has a set of tires, so you can roll them down the street, douchebag conehead.
-
I have a suspicion that "G_Thang" ( ::)) isn't exactly in "two weeks out" condition if you catch my meaning.

I'm in damn good shape for 5'10" 206, but i won't pass on a good pastry shop. Why the fuck would i deny myself? It's not like I'm training for the Mr O or a paid contest, dumbass.

Settle down little guy, it's painfully obvious you couldn't handle a workout at Coachs gym so stick to the left side of the dumbell rack and keep adjusting the seats on your pretty little cable machines, Little "G".

Chaos, how strong do you think the correlation is between (1) making 8+ posts a day on a bodybuilding forum, (2) never posting a pic, and (3) being fat, ugly, or some combination thereof ???

Hey Vince, it's not the equipment it's knowing what to do with it. Lets take the average person who wants to lose weight, forget the athletes for awhile. What do think is going to get the best results (diet aside), a isolated "bicep" machine for $1500+ or my ropes or tires for practically nothing? You think before you speak anything about training and evolve a little in your training.
-
How Coach rakes in so much money from something that looks like that is beyond me. In most parts of the world, a gym like that would fail within 2 months.
I guess Coach has a good marketing scheme. Plus, must be all the praying he is doing. Its quite obvious our Lord and Saviour is bring members to Coaches gym.
-

There's a lot of loose talk about the coach making all kinds of money with this gym. It's been open one week. And from the looks of it, he was broke going intob yhis thing. Anybody here privy to the coach's income tax filings? Financial statements?

1. My marketing is mostly word of mouth.
2. What does it matter what the gym looks like as long as it's clean and has all of the necessities?

This business was already in operation, we just got a new facility and as I said in the very first thread I posted I said IT WAS NOW OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. "Is anyone privy to the coaches income tax? financial statements? hahahaha. Lets just say i own every piece of equipment free and clear. LOL

Because most people do CARE about how a gym looks. I mean, maybe the people you train dont care. A gym like yours in many areas would fail, since most people are not into that type of training. The average person is NOT into flipping tires. You're catering to a very specific population. With such a small subset of people who like to flip tires, its baffling how you can make money off of a gym like that. but I guess if its broke, dont fix it.

"LOL"? Something's funny? Where's the tangible evidence you're making a killing? Your circa 1998 website? Your converted Quik-Lube you call a gym? Ropes and tires?

Most people are used to seeing one kind of gym and thats all they know. Most people go to a gym for results. If people get results they can give a shit they way a gym looks. Doesn't matter if it's an athlete or a soccer mom. If they're more concerned about the way a gym looks than results then they deserve to go somewhere else. For the record, I can get just as good of results if not better than any big facility.
-

Thats the problem, most people go to a gym to socialize and are all not that serious about how they look. Youre assuming everyone is a hardcore lifter. :-\ Most people arent.

he's not assuming anything- he's targeting a certain clientele--- people interested in improving their athletic performance. It's like complaining about why anyone would make a truck because most people buy regular cars.

I know he is, but if you read my posts, I stated that in most other places/areas his business would fail. Most other places, meaning areas where that sort of specialized training is not desired.
-
true,

Yes, because they cater to the average Joe, hence their success.
I mean, Coach could definitely make a good living, but places like LA Fitness are bringing in the big bucks because they cater to average people. Coach is focused on a specialized subset of people, which is definitely going to hinder the amount of people he could bring in. Which is fine, I guess as long as he could make a living, then who cares.
-

I never said making a living was earning a set amount. Making a living, just meaning as long as he could pay his bills and live comfortably, etc.
He does have the power of Jesus on his side, which gives him in the upper hand!

Coach trains athletes, not bodybuilders, athletes are concerned with results, not wether or not they look pretty. I guess now we know what's wrong with your chest. ;)

Funny how most here don't realize that serious athletes are willing to shell out much more than the average gym membership per month if they are getting results. Put aside Coachs beliefs and anyone with half a brain can see he has been successful at what he's doing so he must be doing something right.

convict in a box, we all know coach has a specialized client base, but that doesn't stop us from busting his ass. obviously, he's doing well, since he's in a million dollar pad in southern cal. but i don't believe a damn thing until he posts those photos of his hot softball girls.

Don't let it fool you, LA fitness, 24hr, Planet nutjob and gyms like it are financially eating shit and are In trouble and that includes Golds. Look at those gyms layouts, size and pricing. Basically the same gyms, same layouts, damn near the same amenities and not far from the same.pricing. low monthly memberships with a $100k +++ overhead and leveraged to the hilt.

Okay, that's actually a pretty cool proverb, despite it being in a book that consists of fairy tales. Still, its a good saying :)
-
Coach believes in an apostate version of Christianity, so he should be right at homw with the aetheists.
;D ;D
-
I don't see things ending well on here for yagr. He's an obvious retard who can't listen or adhere to a warning. But, like most pussies on here he'll keep hiding behind his proxy like scared little girl. See ya sister, it should be at least 30 days if not indefinitely.

I don't understand how it's baffling - he makes money because he provides a specialty service, and he's operating with very little debt. To make a gym look like an LA Fitness often requires tons of financing, than it's a scramble to constantly add members to offset the loan payments. With a gym like Coach's, it will probably take a low membership rate to cover the basic costs, and the PT will all be gravy. Plus, Coach actually loves what he does and is good at it, which only will add to the success.
Plus, the subset is not that small or specific, as warehouse gyms are popping up all over the place. Like it or not, look how Crossfit has gained popularity - all their shit is always shown in warehouse type gyms. I know plenty of suburban Dad types like myself who are all doing this stuff in some way, shape or form.
The giant, over sized BB gym is on it's way out. The business model doesn't work. Even the foo-foo Equinox gym I go to caters to this type of training.

One of the most serious training gyms I trained at as a young fella was an old cow milking shed with some heavy ass old equipment, the place was so beat up there were holes and floorboards would shift. It was a beatdown piece of shit place, but it was run by a couple of evangelical Christians and charged us what we could afford. Dudes there trained serious as hell, no showers, hardly ever a woman, just blood sweat and tears.

I just got some gym tees done for me and the other christian guys I train with - black shirt with
YOU THINK THATS HEAVY? (on the front in white).......
(On the back) TRY LIFTING THIS! (with a screenshot from passion of the christ where Jesus is carrying cross up to golgotha)
On the bottom we put John 3:16 scripture in full.
Get's a lot of attention - especially when 4 pretty big strong guys are open about Jesus and helping everyone out with their sets etc 8)

Sounds Great ::)
And Coach's place looks just fine...those types of places are popping up all over the place these days.
fitness studios, and small group training with unconventional equipment are the way the industry is going..even LA fitness is shifting their training sales from one on one to small group, next time you guys in are at an LA fitness ,read the PT signs posted everywhere...it's all about small group training these days.
My friend is a trainer there and they are having their trainers get away from doing BBing style type workouts on machines , and incorporate full body stuff and floor work. it would not surprise me in the least if you start seeing some machines being taken out, and being condensed... to free up floor space.
For all of the stupid fucking trolls and haters, Coach knows what the fuck he is doing.
too many straight up ASSHOLES on this site these days

I can't see a day when I don't head straight for the free weights, and a couple of select machines. The irony is the other day I was doing heavy military presses in the power rack, and nearby there was some little twig of a personal trainer running his client through the current brand of nonsense with some ropes. Well the client kept looking at me as I did my sets with this look in his face which said "why am I playing hopscotch with this 140 lb trainer. I want to do what the musclehead is doing with the barbell."
-

Same here, but we are the minority these days. "functional strength training' is what people are into, and it's the way the industry is going. They will pull every machine out of there in a heartbeat if they think it will make more money to have ropes and tires instead....And IMO it's just a matter of time.
Why buy (or lease) extremely expensive machinery that also needs to be maintained, when you can make more money with ropes, tires and cables that are dirt cheap in comparison ?
I don't think you will ever see a gym with no machines or weights, but the big box gyms will adapt to the market and give people what they want. That Crossfit shit is wildly popular, as is P90X, the "Insanity" workout, TRX cables...... all bodyweight stuff that quite simply, is more effective at losing weight. Which is what 80% of people that go to the gym want. Very few people want to be all jacked up, they want to be thin and fit
a friend of mine opened a gym in an upscale area. NO machines besides these things called "ski-NRG" or some shit, that are mounted upright on the wall, and some rowing machines (the cardio kind)
he's got four power cages in a row a a bunch of those TRX cables hanging from them. four sets of ropes, and about 20 sandbags , with handles on them in varying weights, a few benches and a good amount of weights and dumbells, different size boxes, and dynamax medicine balls. he runs groups of 15-20 people through workouts and his classes are booked solid.
he charges $250 a month for a membership and he's doing great. He used to run gyms for Pure Fitness for 15 years, he knows his shit, and this is what he's doing. I'm actually thinking of going in with him, he's planning on opening another one soon

Maybe bodybuilding will end up back at square one: guys lifting free weights in the garage or in some dirty shithole gym, like in the forties and fifties. I'm rready, because I always keep a bench and some free weights where I live.

I'm.not comparing in anyway shape or form but YouTube "Westside barbell gym tour"

I actually think that's where it's headed, over time.
there will be "hardcore" bodybuilding gyms filled with free weights, and all of those machines that LA fitness unloads for cheap in a few years, and it won't be 25 bucks a month anymore :P
The Big Box gyms will basically be huge fitness studios filled with homos like BigCyp :D

Groink, do you read Thomas Plummer? He's.the one who coined the phrase "box gym".

Nope...I always use "big box" when referring to huge retail chains. Best Buy, Wal-Mart.. etc.
Good luck with your gym too, you should look into TRX cables if you already haven't..really versatile and popular, and Sandbags are cool too

Just a note on other small clubs -
Bulgarian training hall 1980's -
.
David Rigert and the Russian olympic team -
.
Cal Strength, one of America's top Olympic gyms -

Most of them aren't much different than the little set up Coach has. And, as mentioned, Westside Barbell started as a tiny little place, not much bigger than a tiny retail store, and still isn't much bigger.
Sometimes it isn't what you have, but what you can make it do that's important.

Translation = its a messy shithole, but has that 'hardcore' appeal ::) ::)
I'm sure soccer moms are gonna work out with team tapout.
lol jk good luck with your new place coach. Owning a gym is cool...

Many people are hating! And although I do like Mitt Romney, I still like Obama more... I agree with Coach on some issues and disagree on others,
Politics aside though, I'm a big fan of "The Coach" seems like he's got his shit together, living the dream, buying boats, running his own gym, a lot of Getbig young bucks can learn a thing or two from this man's experience in life! Some people don't understand what its like to run your own business and how hard it really is, it becomes your life!
Good for you Coach, I really wish you nothing but continual success!

its a nice set up, but i really wouldn't call it a gym, i don't see how more then 5 people can workout there at one time, But im sure coach isnt selling memberships , he is selling Personal Training time .... So this is perfect for his needs, Gives him more time to close shop in the afternoon and set sail this summer

No, I'm not selling memberships. We can comfortably run up to 12-15 at a time. If powerlifters or stongmen want to come in at certain times and train on their own we will charge a small monthly fee for that.
