This isn't really a gossip & opinion topic, but the DUDES only visit here, so...
Fat guy asked me what's better: focus on dieting first, start building later..? You surely can't drop the fat as fast when you have to eat so much protein...
What's it gonna be ?

for noobs you can do both at the same time.

If he is a newbie and starts lifting weights (correctly) and eats at maintenance he will see recomposition, which means he will lose a small amount of fat.

Yeah but he asked if he crash dieted first, drop like 50 lbs of lard with of course some muscle (which he hardly has) in a relatively short time (like 3-4 lbs a week), and then starts building...will the result in a year or so be better than when he starts working out and eating a bit below maintenance ?
It's an interesting question, I just can't tell...

Diet first

50 lbs of fat..... diet first

I think so too. I read once that Vince Gironda sent fat guys home before they could train in his gym, they should diet first.. ;D

How fat is he? And how tall? And how old?
Dropping fifty pounds is an awesome accomplishment. Losing three-four pounds a week is only possible during the first two-three weeks, after that it slows down.

I heard that guy used to kick people out of his gym for doing squats..lol
But yeah much easier to build up when already lean due to enhanced nutrient partitioning and other factors.

I really enjoyed his column in MMI in the early 90s. He was such a grumpy old fart. He indeed hated back squats, and bench presses too. He favoured dips, his pecs in his best years showed it. I think he was like disqualified during a contest once because he was "too ripped".
I really would have liked to train at his gym once.... ;D Terrific dude, Honey Badger League.

They don't make people like that any more. No one stands for anything...
