Romney could have made some momentum with Obama's announcement.....now this....... ::)
Fox News
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/05/10/romney-apologizes-for-high-school-pranks/?test=latestnews
Mitt Romney apologized Thursday for what he described as "hijinks and pranks during high school," in response to a newspaper story that claimed he and other students pinned down a classmate and cut off his hair back in 1965.
The individual involved was gay, according to the Washington Post story, and was sporting bleached blond hair at the time.
Romney, though, told Fox News Radio Thursday he doesn't recall that specific incident, and certainly did not know the student was gay.
"I don't remember that incident," he said. "And I'll tell you I certainly don't believe that I ... thought the fellow was homosexual. That was the furthest thing from our minds back in the 1960s, so that was not the case."
But he acknowledged playing pranks and teasing other students, and apologized for those that went "too far" -- while noting he is "a very different person" now.
"Back in high school, you know, I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize," Romney said.
"For me, it's about 48 years ago, so, again, if there's anything I said that's offensive to someone I certainly am sorry about that, very deeply sorry about that. But there was no harm intended."
The Washington Post published a lengthy story Thursday about Romney's days at Cranbrook School.
Sourcing several fellow students, the article claimed the young Romney was perturbed by the bleached hairstyle of student John Lauber. Lauber died in 2004 -- the Post claimed to have confirmed details of the Cranbrook School incident with five students.
"He can't look like that. That's wrong," Romney reportedly told a friend after seeing Lauber's hair. According to the story, Romney led a group of students who tackled Lauber while Romney cut his hair off as the student "screamed for help."
While saying Thursday that he didn't recall the incident, Romney said, "I had no idea that this person might have been gay."

1) Okay, he was a young punk kid. It's not the man he is today.
2) Oh, he's lying when he said he didn't remember it. That's a pretty big deal, to cut a kid's hair off. Unless he did it a lot of time lol
So yeah, it's old shit, you were a young dumbass... but don't insult our intelligence with "I dont even remember..." Even reagan didn't get away with that amnesia stuff - you sure don't mitten.
-
Considering obama did coke, pot, and drank like a fish in high school himself, not to mention hung out w communist Frank Marshal Davis, this is news why?
oh, and how convenient the media drops this story today. ::) ::) ::)

He gathered a group of students, tackled him to the ground and cut his hair because he had it bleached blond and was gay????? I'll take the coke snorting and pot smoking anyday....that's pretty fucked up if you ask me

I think obama didn't terrorize, hurt & violate another man when he had his own substance abuse.
You ever been restrained against your own will, 33? ever been in handcuffs? Ever had your head shaved while another man held you down and shouted homosexual slurs at you?
"It was an act of torment, for being different" was the quote. Old news, but lying about "I dont even remember that..."
ROmney is a smart man. he takes care of himself. He knew what he was doing. He remembers.

That's the problem I have with this shit.....he apologizes...but he doesn't remember. Come on now, anyone would remember doing some shit like that and he knows up....he must be getting his advice about lying from Santorum and Bachmann. ::)

Who does obama get advice from for his lies?

The correct comment is, if this story is true, why does the media get to "harvest" this story until the most opportune time?
The media did this with McCain's "affair" that never occurred.
I completely discount "harvested" stories. It loses its value when it is held back for dramatic effect.
-
He shaved a kid's head 50 years ago? END OF THE WORLD. ::)
Anything to deflect from the flip-flopping Usurper and his handling of the economy, I suppose.
-
its certainly dirty politics at its finest. Dems did their opposition research and held this back.
Now I think MORE THAN EVER that it was an INTENTIONAL comment by Biden that caused all of this. The icing on the cake was "I apologized to obama for causing this mess for him..."
Totally intentional, dude. And the end results? let's count them
1) Obama respects states rights and agrees with the will of the people - ain't touching the law
2) On a personal level, obama respects it and is open minded
3) Gay donations - thru the roof
4) Mitt Romney admits to being a bully who picks on gay kids, and claims not to remember a really cruel act.
Gee, I"m sure 33 will find a "winning" moment here for MItt, ,like now he has cornered the homophobic a-hole vote. To me, it's shady-as-fuck political moves, all the way. And since the victim has passed away, there can be no embracing moment where romney makes it right.
-
So they bring it out when it's not even front page news and completely overshadowed by Obama? Yeah, brilliant logic on your part again. ::)
-
They use biden for beta testing. The risk here was if there would be backlash from the black religious community. Biden put it out there. They assessed the risk. I think they must have decided that the religious blacks will vote for obama no matter what. And they need the gay donations. Biden is the perfect test fir all of this. If it backfires, you can always say that he put his foot in his mouth. There is nothin dirty about this. This is politics. This is effective politics by the obama camp. A victory for them. Hopefully they will lose the white hiuse in nov. Though
smart man right here. It felt good for repubs to say "ooh ooh let's add it to the Biden gaffe thread!" and "ooh, let's have Rush talk about this for 2 hours, how out of control Biden is..."
Smelled a lot like an inside job from minute one. Repubs fed right into it. Capping it off with "Not only does obama love gay people, but look, Romney hates them..." was superb, effective, and morally bankrupt politics.

You think he'll cost to victory on this like you claimed with the OBL killing? LOL.
It's pretty funny how quick you are to talk about anything but the economy. Can't find hide nor hair of you in any of those threads but you're running around with your little stiffy furiously beating yourself off in any other thread.

By the way, try capitalizing "cost" next time you attack someone's spelling or grammar. ::)

I can turn on Rush tomorrow from 12 til 1215.... he won't be starting the show with the economy.
it'll be about this gay/obama story.
-
This, even by liberal standards, is pathetic.
As Hannity just pointed out, these numbskulls aren't pointing out Obama's pushing around A GIRL, when he was in high school.
Romney supposedly bullies a guy; Obama admits to bullying A GIRL.
See how this works, liberals.
Try as you might to deflect from Obama's sorry job record. But, it ain't working, just like MemoGate didn't work or Bush's DUI.

Through the roof? PLEASE!! Obama wasn't getting PEANUTS, prior to this. His gay bundlers pretty much extorted him (through Biden) into doing this. Besides, as gay activists found out the hard way two nights ago, you can outspend your opponents, yet still GET THE BRAKES BEATEN OFF YOU.
Gay activists spent over twice as much money, trying to defeat NC's marriage amendment. They lost in a landslide.
Obama did this because his donations are WAY BEHIND.
The end results will be that he will LOSE black voters. He'll still get over 90% of them. But, if he drops from 95% to 92% (especially with blacks in swing states, not in states that go blue, no matter what), he's TOAST!!
It IS a winner for Romney for one reason: The infighting among Republicans has been social conservatives vs. economic ones, the latter ones, begging Romney not to bring up social issues. While Romney hasn't made social issues the focus of his campaign, he hasn't ignored them, either.
Thanks to the knuckleheads on the left, Romney doesn't have to bring them up. They're doing it for him. That's going to energize the conservative base, while Obama risks losing a small but significant portion of the only group that sheepishly votes for him (or any other Democrat) no matter what.
The gays will have little impact, outside of fundraising, because many of them are concentrated in blue states that Obama will easily win. It's about the swing states. Conservatives will rally there and Obama will likely lose some crucial states he won last election.
And, let's not forget the Latino voters who (unlike black voters) DO NOT vote for Dems to the tune of 90% or more. Bush jumped 9-10 points from 2000 to 2004 in this demo. And the gay "marriage" issue was part of the reason why.

Technically, he isn't out of the primary, supposedly the worst GOP field in history. Yet, Obama is losing to (or statistically tied with) Romney.

My contention is that an inmate in any state would garner 41 percent at the rate and pace we are. Going.
I know what Romney is! I voted for Ron Paul in TJE NYS primary. But most , like. Myself , are ABO.
toss up Bernie madoff or vandersloot and those criminals would also get 40 percent.

Now this is just silly. The Washington Post can’t be bothered to worry about Barack Obama’s college years, college transcripts, communist friends, cocaine use, or cop-killing plotters in whose living room he first launched his major political career, but they can get in the really way back machine to 1965 and Mitt Romney’s high school years.
Mitt Romney cut a hippy’s hair at his preparatory high school. A day after Barack Obama caved on gay marriage, the Washington Post “coincidentally” says Mitt Romney cut the hair of a boy who “was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality.”
Let’s leave out the fact that the kid who got his haircut was subsequently thrown out of school for smoking one cigarette, but we’re to believe that the assailants of his hair, witnessed by many, were ignored. Oh, and the guy who got is hair cut never, ever, ever mentioned it, including to family, and died in 2004 so it can’t be verified. But a handful of students who now probably support Barack Obama have a crystal clear memory of events from 50 years ago. The people who were adults at the time of the incident and still alive have no memory of it, but remember Romney and said he was never a disciplinary problem.
N*gg*rhead rock, anybody?
After four years of ignoring Barack Obama’s bullying of religious groups and others from inside the White House, it’s fair game to go after Mitt Romney as a supposed high school bully.
I guess we won’t hear the left whining any more when we mention Barack Obama eating a dog since, as they are quick to point out, he was a kid when it happened.
We have now had more in depth examination of Mitt Romney by the Gang of 500 than of Barack Obama.
We do not really know much about Barack Obama’s constituent record in the Illinois Legislature.
We still don’t know his college transcripts.
We still don’t know what exactly he did for ACORN in his community organizing time.
We still don’t know all the details about the depth of the cocaine use Barack Obama admitted to in his book. Likewise, we know very little about his drug use in high school beyond just a few lines of reporting from 2007.
We know very little, outside of his own autobiographical spin, about how he overcame his rage at white people — something he wrote about, but again, as a politician in an autobiography.
We still don’t know about just how many communists Barack Obama chose to surround himself with.
We still know very little about Barack Obama’s ties to Bill Ayers and the media sure hates to talk about Barack Obama getting his major political start in Bill Ayers’ living room.
But the press is perfectly happy to go back several decades to tell us every salacious detail about Mitt Romney the teenager.
This reminds me of 1992 all over again. The George H. W. Bush team wanted to go focus on Bill Clinton the draft dodger from Vietnam because they couldn’t fight on the economy. Unlike 1992, Barack Obama has the media doing it for him.
-
I guess we won’t hear the left whining any more when we mention Barack Obama eating a dog since, as they are quick to point out, he was a kid when it happened.
This is why I hate the leftist media. They are all hypocrites. Bringing up crap about Romney when he was a teen but at the same time being dismissive of anything Obama did when he was younger. Including shoving A GIRL. And later on being a drug user and socializing with terrorists.

Washington Post Romney Hit Piece Implodes
by Ben Shapiro6 hours ago106post a comment
http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Journalism/2012/05/10/Washington-Post-Hit-Piece-Implodes
Today’s unconscionable Washington Post story, which implied without evidence that Mitt Romney was a homophobic bully to one John Lauber back in his high school days five decades ago, has totally imploded.
Timed to drop the day after President Obama’s announced embrace of same-sex marriage, the story set the political world atwitter. But earlier today, Breitbart News reported that the Post had inflated witness testimony. The original Washington Post piece stated the following:
“I always enjoyed his pranks,” said Stu White, a popular friend of Romney’s who went on to a career as a public school teacher and has long been bothered by the Lauber incident. [emphasis added]
Yet in an interview with ABC News today, White disowned that characterization:
While the Post reports White as having “long been bothered” by the haircutting incident,” he told ABC News he was not present for the prank, in which Romney is said to have forcefully cut a student’s long hair and was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post.
White didn’t know about the incident until this year, but the Post reported that he had “long been bothered” by it. We demanded a correction.
So the Washington Post did what no reputable newspaper should ever do when caught falsifying testimony: it made a stealth correction to its own article. The article now reads:
“I always enjoyed his pranks,” said Stu White, a popular friend of Romney’s who went on to a career as a public school teacher and said he has been “disturbed” by the Lauber incident since hearing about it several weeks ago, before being contacted by The Washington Post. “But I was not the brunt of any of his pranks.” [emphasis added]
The Post did not note that it had made any correction to the article.
It was irresponsible of the Post to run the hit piece in the first place, especially given its obvious bias; to retract a critical phrase and replace it without noting the retraction is just as bad.
But it gets worse. Tonight, Christine Lauber, John Lauber’s sister, said that she didn’t know anything about the bullying incident. More importantly, she said that the story had factual inaccuracies. Betsy Lauber, another of John’s sisters, told ABC News, “The family of John Lauber is releasing a statement saying the portrayal of John is factually incorrect and we are aggrieved that he would be used to further a political agenda. There will be no more comments from the family.” Said Christine, “If he were alive today, he would be furious [about the story].” Jason Horowitz, the reporter on the Post story, did speak to both sisters and quoted them in the story – but apparently still botched the facts.
The Post piece implies that the Romney incident was somehow the beginning of the end for Lauber:
Sometime in the mid-1990s, David Seed noticed a familiar face at the end of a bar at Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
“Hey, you’re John Lauber,” Seed recalled saying at the start of a brief conversation. Seed, also among those who witnessed the Romney-led incident, had gone on to a career as a teacher and principal. Now he had something to get off his chest.
“I’m sorry that I didn’t do more to help in the situation,” he said.
Lauber paused, then responded, “It was horrible.” He went on to explain how frightened he was during the incident, and acknowledged to Seed, “It’s something I have thought about a lot since then.”
Lauber died in 2004, according to his three sisters.
But Lauber, at least according to his obituary in the South Bend Tribune, led an incredibly full life. He graduated from Vanderbilt, became a member of the British Horse Society, had his seaman papers, was a licensed mortician in three states and head chef at the Russian River Resort in California, and even served as a civilian contractor to the troops in Iraq. This does not sound like someone crippled by a supposedly crucial incident back in high school.

What's on a kid's menu (and is acceptable locally) at age 6 is different from someone in HIGH SCHOOL terrorizing another kid.
Imagine being restrained by a group of men and shaved publicaly. That's some fcked up shit. I'm sure Romney has changed. But it's a fuct up thing to do. That guy probably didn't forget about it as casually as Romney did, ,that's for sure.

5 witnesses have come fwd and romney has apologized for it. Nobody is denying it happened, 33.
Doesn't matter, and has no bearing upon romney today. He was a prick kid doing prick shit.
I am not sure someone with the intelligence and quickness of Romney doesn't remember it.... I think he isn't being honest there. Cause the next Q would have been "But if you rememebred it, Mitt, why did you never contact the kid to apologize for 48 years?"
So it's not an issue for president. but it does show he lies when convenient.

Sister of Alleged Romney Target Has ‘No Knowledge’ of Any Bullying Incident
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/05/sister-of-alleged-romney-target-has-no-knowledge-of-any-bullying-incident
The older sister of Mitt Romney’s former high school classmate said she has no knowledge of any bullying incident involving her brother and the GOP presidential candidate.
Christine Lauber of South Bend, Ind., had not seen the Washington Post’s story that described an incident when Mitt Romney bullied her brother, but said she was aware of the story. The incident centered around Romney allegedly holding the scissors to help cut the hair of John Lauber, who was presumed to be gay and who had long hair.
Romney’s former classmate, Phillip Maxwell, now a lawyer, described witnessing the incident and said he considered the “prank” the two pulled at Michigan’s Cranbrook School to be “assault and battery.”
Maxwell said he held the boy’s arm and leg, describing himself and his friends as a “pack of dogs.”
Christine Lauber, who is a few years older than John Lauber, was at college when the alleged incident happened, and said the brother and sister were “doing our own thing” at the time.
When ABC News showed her the story, Christine Lauber’s eyes welled up with tears and she became agitated.
She also corrected the story, saying her brother was a boarder, not a day student.
She described her brother as a “very unusual person.”
“He didn’t care about running with the peer group,” Christine Lauber said. “What’s wrong with that?”
Betsy Lauber, one of John Lauber’s three sisters, spoke with ABC News Tuesday night regarding the accuracy of the story.
“The family of John Lauber is releasing a statement saying the portrayal of John is factually incorrect and we are aggrieved that he would be used to further a political agenda. There will be no more comments from the family,” she said.
Romney has since apologized for what he said were “pranks” in high school but has said he doesn’t remember the specific event.
Romney said “homosexuality was the furthest thing from his mind” when it came to the jokes he played on classmates.
“Even if it did happen, John probably wouldn’t have said anything,” Christine Lauber said.
She added she and her sisters will likely put out a statement later via a family attorney.
“If he were still alive today, he would be furious [about the story],” she said with tears in her eyes.
The Washington Post contacted and quoted both Christine and Betsy Lauber in their original story.
John Lauber died of liver cancer in 2004, according to the Washington Post.

When the media starts going WAY back in a person's life ANYTHING becomes FAIR GAME. Anything. Who determines how far to go back in time? You? So it's ok to bring up crap that occurred in High School, but nothing from middle school or elementary? Why? Even in High School a person is still in the maturing process.
I noticed that you ignore Obama's drug use and socializing with terrorists and a maniacal racist "pastor" AS AN ADULT. But, lets ignore all of that because Mitt may have cut a hippie's hair. If you were living at that time, you might have joined Mitt on the act.

It says a lot about brothaz who participate in the democratic process. Did everyone on yo block' write Tookie Williams on their ballot in 2004, or did they confuse election day with Urban Beach Week and forget to vote completely?
-
thank you for proving my point

thank you for proving my point
I would vote for Tookie's corpse over obama.

your an idiot - the main witness did not even see it!

Obama's coke use in college is CERTAINLY relevant.
I didn't use coke in college, but everyone I know who did so was a piece of shit, and is a piece of shit today, 15 years later. I never bought into "but but but he was just experimenting in college" about drugs. Obama (and bush) using coke is a BIG FUCCKING DEAL. It's a felony, it's dangerous, and it's not just 'kids being kids'.
I never understood how the poor decision making required to possess felony drugs at age 22 isn't viewed more importantly by voters. IF IF IF a candidate did 2 years in prison for COKE at age 22, they'd never be president. But if you Use and never get caught, hey, enjoy the job.
-
and you know what? If Americans ever had the common sense to elect a president who DIDNt use drugs in college, they might end up with a candidate who learned something in college.
Seriously, why not choose a person who had good decision making skill at age 18, DECLINING ILLEGAL DRUGS while in college? WHy do we settle for canddiates who "finally grew up" in their mid-twenties? Hell, Mccain called a woman a c*nt when he was 55. Then "he's matured". He had an affair in his 40s. "he grew up" Newt? He was in his 50s sticking his d1ck places.
Sorry, but romeny doing this at 16 or 17 shows us he can be a real asshole and bully, just like obama's coke use at 19 or 20 shows us he broke the law. Hell, BOTH broke the law. It's agains the law to hold someone down and shave them. SO yes, they're both POS criminals. We agree?
-
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned already, but here's what doesn't make sense.
Romney says he doesn't remember the incident but he's sure the kid wasn't attacked for being gay.
-

Romney says he doesn't remember the incident but he's sure the kid wasn't attacked for being gay.
He remembers. That's a pretty huge thing to do. He's obviously lying about it.
If he said "I was a dick and I picked on the kid cause I hated his hair... It was a felony and I feel like shit about it...
and I'm donating 1 million to anti-bullying charities to make things right!"
Wow, wouldn't that be an awesome move?
-

Yeah. No shit.
-
That's the problem I have with this shit.....he apologizes...but he doesn't remember. Come on now, anyone would remember doing some shit like that and he knows up....he must be getting his advice about lying from Santorum and Bachmann. ::)
x2. If you don't remember it why are you apologizing? No one likes a bully or an obvious liar. ::)
Being a liar is one thing... Being a transparent liar stinks!

PLEASE!!! Romney knows the libs want him to waste his time, tying himself in knots about this issue. Romney simply made his apology and pressed on.
Now, that the family of the allegedly gay blond guy is all but flat-out calling the WaPO story a bunch of BS, the "journalists" there have to wipe the egg off their faces, while Romney can get back to beating Obama silly, by pointing out the president's sorry record.

NBC Reports Romney Bully Story Labeled 'Factually Incorrect' By Family of Alleged Victim
Media Research Center ^ | 5/11/12 | Kyle Drennen
At the end of a full report on Friday's NBC Today, based on a Washington Post hit piece that accused Mitt Romney of bullying of a gay high school classmate, correspondent Peter Alexander admitted the story may be false: "NBC News isn't naming the student who was allegedly bullied....Late last night, his sister told NBC News that his portrayal in the Washington Post story is 'factually incorrect'..."
Despite that important detail, the network morning show still decided to promote the accusations. At the top of the show, co-host Ann Curry teased: "Prep school bully? Mitt Romney responds to a report that as a teenager he led a bullying incident of a classmate who later came out as gay....Could an incident that happened nearly 50 years ago impact the presidential race?"
Alexander touted the story as the "latest example" of how "nothing is off limits in politics" (Certainly not a standard the press have applied to President Obama). He went on to hype it as a stumbling block for the Romney campaign: "While Mitt Romney tries to focus on the fall of 2012, he's been forced to respond to claims of bullying dating back to the spring of '65, nearly 50 years ago."
Alexander selected the most sensational quotes from the Post story:
...the Washington Post cites five of Romney's prep school classmates, one describing what happened as an "assault"....what one of them described as a "vicious" incident where Romney allegedly led a group of friends to confront another student, who the Post reports was believed to be gay....Romney and his friends, one of them the school's wrestling champion, "tackled" the boy "and pinned him to the ground." And then as the boy began to cry, screaming for help, "Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors."
Alexander made sure to note: "One of Romney's classmates, Phillip Maxwell, confirmed the story to NBC News, noting the boys grew into 'a distinguished group of men' and 'we look back at it now and it's a black mark on our own character.'"
Asking if "a presidential candidate's behavior in high school [is] relevant today?," Alexander cited reaction from the left and the right:
...it depends who you ask. One Democratic operative tweeted, "Mitt Romney was intolerant in 1965, assaulting a presumed homosexual with scissors, and he's intolerant today, opposing civil unions and same-sex marriage." But a prominent conservative commentator dismissed its significance, tweeting, "In light of the Post's story, I just don't think I can bring myself to vote for the 17-year-old Mitt Romney for president."
Only after painting Romney as a mean-spirited bully did Alexander bother to mention the comments from the alleged victim's sister. He further explained that she "said the family is upset...that he's being used, in her words, 'to further a political agenda.'"
That prompted co-host Ann Curry to further question the legitimacy of the Post story: "Peter, on that point, can you shed any light about the timing of this? I mean, having this allegation against Mitt Romney come so soon after the President made his announcement about gay marriage."
Alexander confessed: "Yeah, a lot of people view the timing as either questionable or suspicious. Of course, the reporting came out just one day after the President said he supported same-sex marriage....a lot of people are asking questions about the exact timing of this. The Post insists this is reporting they've been working on for a while."
If Curry and Alexander were so skeptical of the story, why do a full report on it? And even then, why not lead with the doubts of the account's veracity?
They failed to mention another problem with story that the paper was forced to correct. One of Romney's classmates quoted in the original article never witnessed the incident in question and had never even heard about it until the Post contacted him about the story.
Thursday's NBC Nightly News also covered the story, but in a more measured fashion. While chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd highlighted many of the same quotes as Alexander, he provided several sound bites of Romney and others pushing back on the allegations. Alexander's piece only featured a single clip of Romney responding.
In addition, Todd balanced the Romney story with Barack Obama's troubled youth: "In 2007, then-candidate Obama faced some criticism for his admission of youthful indiscretions in his book, 'Dreams From My Father.'" In the audio book sound bite that followed, Obama admitted: "I kept playing basketball, attended classes sparingly, drank beer heavily, and tried drugs enthusiastically."
Todd wrapped up the report by pointing out: "...the Romney campaign's been in damage control mode, and late this afternoon, they've been sending out statements from other high school friends of Mitt Romney, sort of serving as character witnesses, saying he was not a mean guy, this is not Mitt Romney's character."
Here is a full transcript of Alexander's May 11 report on Today:
7:00AM ET TEASE:
ANN CURRY: Prep school bully? Mitt Romney responds to a report that as a teenager he led a bullying incident of a classmate who later came out as gay. He says he doesn't recall it. But is sorry if anyone was hurt. Could an incident that happened nearly 50 years ago impact the presidential race?
7:08AM ET SEGMENT:
CURRY: Now to presidential politics, and an alleged bullying incident from Mitt Romney's high school days that is making headlines now, nearly 50 years later. He addressed the issue on Thursday. We've got NBC's Peter Alexander in Washington with more on this story. Peter, good morning.
PETER ALEXANDER: Ann, good morning to you. If it wasn't already sufficiently clear that nothing is off limits in politics, here's your latest example. This alleged bullying incident first reported by the Washington Post cites five of Romney's prep school classmates, one describing what happened as an "assault." Last night the Romney campaign pushed back, putting out statements from some of Romney's high school friends, calling the characterization of him as a bully absurd, saying Romney, "never had a malicious bone in his body."
[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Prep School & The Presidency; Romney Responds to Story of Bullying in High School]
MITT ROMNEY: Give me your vote on Tuesday, give me your vote in November, we're taking back the White House!
ALEXANDER: While Mitt Romney tries to focus on the fall of 2012, he's been forced to respond to claims of bullying dating back to the spring of '65, nearly 50 years ago. When he was a high school senior here at the exclusive Cranbrook school near Detroit.
Several of Romney's former classmates told the Washington Post about what one of them described as a "vicious" incident where Romney allegedly led a group of friends to confront another student, who the Post reports was believed to be gay. And didn't fit in with his bleach-blond hair covering one eye. The article says Romney and his friends, one of them the school's wrestling champion, "tackled" the boy "and pinned him to the ground." And then as the boy began to cry, screaming for help, "Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors."
One of Romney's classmates, Phillip Maxwell, confirmed the story to NBC News, noting the boys grew into "a distinguished group of men" and "we look back at it now and it's a black mark on our own character."
On Thursday, Romney quickly addressed the claims on Fox News. And denied bullying anyone for being gay.
ROMNEY: I had no idea what that individual's sexual orientation might be, going back to the 1960s, that wasn't something that we all discussed or considered. So that's – that's simply just not accurate. I don't recall the incident myself, but I've seen the reports, and not going to argue with that. There's no question but that I did some stupid things when I was in high school. And obviously, if I hurt anyone by virtue of that, I would be very sorry for it and apologize for it.
ALEXANDER: This controversy has raised another question: Is a presidential candidate's behavior in high school relevant today? Like most everything else in politics, it depends who you ask.
And NBC News isn't naming the student who was allegedly bullied, but, in fact, he died several years ago. Late last night, his sister told NBC News that his portrayal in the Washington Post story is "factually incorrect" and said the family is upset, Ann, that he's being used, in her words, "to further a political agenda."
CURRY: Peter, on that point, can you shed any light about the timing of this? I mean, having this allegation against Mitt Romney come so soon after the President made his announcement about gay marriage.
ALEXANDER: Yeah, a lot of people view the timing as either questionable or suspicious. Of course, the reporting came out just one day after the President said he supported same-sex marriage. Mitt Romney has said he opposes same-sex marriage, referring to it as a "tender and sensitive topic." Nonetheless, a lot of people are asking questions about the exact timing of this. The Post insists this is reporting they've been working on for a while.
CURRY: Alright. Peter Alexander, thanks so much for your reporting this morning.

Another far leftist nut who cant stand the heat
-
If it didn't happen, why did he apologize for it?
And of course mom & sis wouldn't know, but the classmates would. Most ppl who get bullied as ashamed and don't brag to family about how they got punked.
-
Hahaha, now the family of the student is a bunch of liars. You think they wouldn't have found out when the kid came home with a shaved head? Can you prove that the students who claim they saw it were actually there when it happened? CNN had two former students saying it didn't happen like that, too. Why should we believe the few who say it did when both the family and other students say it didn't?
Of course we should not but don't let that stop you from making more asinine claims like you did in the Trayvon threads.
Another thread where 240 "I don't buy into what the MSM is selling" is back logs 10x as many posts as he has about the economy in the last month. What a pathetic individual. I know, I know, Rush's fault. ::)

the family admits they dont konw if it happened. Only that they weren't aware of it.
I know i sure as hell didn't brag to my mom when i got punked in high school, and I dont gloat to her when i get pwned on message boards today :)
So yeah, the kids in school who witnesses the assult would remember though.
-

CAN YOU PROVE that those people witnessed it? I know of plenty of fights from my high school that I didn't witness but know of enough from hearsay to probably be able to get up on TV and claim that I saw them. ::)
Should I be surprised that you've logged 10x as many posts on this than you did about Obama's assaulting another student for being black (you've logged 0 posts on that)? Quick, tell us how you think he's an illegal Kenyan who belongs in jail! ::)
-
"assault"??? geez man.
You're the lawyer here.
If I see you in the street, ask 4 of my friends to hold you down against your will and shave your head, will I be charged with any crime?

If Obama assulted a student, he should be apologizing for that shit too. Without question.
Romney apologized for it. So it's not really a Q of if he did it or not.
-
"assault"??? geez man.
if the description of the incident is accurate then it's absolutely an assault
even the dumbest lawyer on the planet should know that

::)
Obama is in serious trouble come November.
If the best his campaign can do is drum up this garbage, he has no shot of being re-elected.
I strongly encourage the braindead weasels on this board who support Obama to keep fighting the good fight. Maybe you guys will luck out and there will be a story leaked to the MSM which reveals Romney stole a lollipop from the local newsstand when he was 7 years old. Unhealthy, killing small business and dishonest!

I'd like to mention that Cranbrook is a boarding school.

his campagin didn't drum this up and I doubt most people after hearing this would not change their plans to vote for Romney based on this story

this was the 1960's and at a boarding school.
It was still an assault but I'm sure shit like this was just ingored
Personally I don't give a rats ass either. All it does is show that Romney was the same douche as a teenager that he is now. It's not exactly a big suprise
-
I'd like to mention that Cranbrook is a boarding school.
I went to a boarding school in 11th and 12th grade. Fortunately, it was co-ed. The boys' dorm was on one side of the campus, the girls' dorm on the other side.

:)

Only 11 to 17 percent of people being bullied will report it.

One of the five has already admitted he wasn't present for the incident and the Post has been quietly scrubbing their article. But we should believe these people over the family. Another 240 gem.

Let's see a number showing percentages where there is clear physical abuse. If a kid came home with his hair all chopped up by scissors, the parents are going to ask questions. Verbal abuse? Maybe not. ::)
-
And, in a slightly related story, Gallup reports that 86% of voters samples say that Obama's gay groveling will either have no impact on their vote or will make them less likely to re-elect the president (60% say no effect; 26% say they're less likely to vote for Obama again).
-
Now this is the dumbest "issue" I've heard in this campaign. It's just as bad as the Palin got poor grades in high school garbage.

Mitt ended up losing because people didn't like him. Base didn't bother to turn out to vote against obama.
he never saw people are people. They were chunks of voters he tried to attract/not alienate.

Gay Vote Proved a Boon for Obama
By MICAH COHEN
While President Obama’s lopsided support among Latino and other minority voters has been a focus of postelection analysis, the overwhelming support he received from another growing demographic group — Americans who identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual — has received much less attention.
But the backing Mr. Obama received from gay voters also has a claim on having been decisive. Mitt Romney and Mr. Obama won roughly an equal share of votes among straight voters nationwide, exit polls showed. And, a study argues, Mr. Romney appears to have won a narrow victory among straight voters in the swing states of Ohio and Florida.
Mr. Obama’s more than three-to-one edge in exit polls among the 5 percent of voters who identified themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual was more than enough to give him the ultimate advantage, according to the study, by Gary J. Gates of the Williams Institute at the U.C.L.A. School of Law, in conjunction with Gallup. The results are consistent with earlier research on the number and political beliefs of gay voters.
Democrats have been winning big over Republicans among gay voters, African-Americans, Latinos, Asian-Americans and Jews. Some of the groups are relatively small, but together they make up about one-third of the electorate, forcing Republicans to capture much of the remaining two-thirds to win elections. By comparison, white evangelical voters, who vote overwhelmingly for Republicans, make up about one-fourth of the electorate, and their numbers are not growing as rapidly.
As with Latinos and Asian-Americans, the number of voters who say they are gay appears to be growing. Only 1.9 percent of Americans over 65 call themselves gay, lesbian or bisexual, according to the Gallup survey, while 3.2 percent of those between 30 and 49, and 6.4 percent of those between 18 and 29 do.
“In the younger population, there is a much wider range in the geography and ethnicity of those who are identifying as L.G.B.T.,” Dr. Gates said, using a common term for lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. That range now extends well beyond major cities and into multiple swing states.
As Republicans plan to reach out to Hispanics and Asian-Americans, another question is whether they would also help themselves by improving their standing among gay voters. Some analysts say Republicans should try to do so, in part to win over moderate straight voters, while others see any such effort as having more risk than upside.
Research by Patrick J. Egan, a professor of politics and public policy at New York University, suggests that gay voters may prove difficult to bring into the Republican tent. Many of them “aren’t swingable because they have liberal positions on a whole bunch of issues besides gay rights,” Dr. Egan said.
Exit polls showed that 76 percent of voters who identified as gay supported Mr. Obama last week, and that 22 percent supported Mr. Romney. Among straight people, each candidate received 49 percent of the vote.
If Republican candidates move to the center on gay rights, they might also risk losing support among cultural conservatives.
“I think it would be a mistake for the party to abandon its moral values,” said J. Hogan Gidley, the national communications director for Rick Santorum’s 2012 presidential run. Instead, Mr. Gidley said, the Republican Party’s low levels of support among gay voters can be outweighed by better messaging to other voters, particularly about same-sex marriage.
“We’ve lost the buzzword battle,” Mr. Gidley said, “that marriage is a ‘right.’ ”
Other Republican strategists, however, say that their party’s stances on social issues like marriage are alienating straight voters, too.
Public support for same-sex marriage and civil unions has climbed steadily since 2004. Recent polls show that support for same-sex marriage now outweighs opposition to it. Surveys by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life have shown that women and younger people support same-sex marriage at substantially higher rates than do men and older voters.
“We have a very good message, a good plan,” said R. Clarke Cooper, the executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans, a group that pushes for gay rights, referring to the Republican Party’s small-government agenda. “But it’s been drowned out by the cacophony and the noise that is perceived as anti-immigrant, or anti-L.G.B.T., or anti-women.”
While polls show that a large majority of Republicans oppose same-sex marriage, there are small signs of a shift in tone among Republican officeholders. When Mr. Obama endorsed same-sex marriage in May, the response from Republican leaders was relatively muted.
Republicans in Congress “will tell me behind closed doors that this is the direction we need to go as a party,” Mr. Cooper said, “but publicly they’re not doing that.”
If the Republican Party does not make inroads among gay voters along with other minority groups, he said, the party risks going the way of the Whigs or becoming a regional party.
Mr. Romney’s loss, Mr. Cooper said, is a sign that broadening the party’s appeal is imperative. “There’s nothing fun about saying ‘I told you so,’ ” he added.
