Title: Heavy bag work
Post by: makaveli25 on May 15, 2012, 12:45:17 PM
I just moved and joined a new gym. It's five minutes away I'm in a great location. They have two pretty big heavy bags up. One looks like a kickboxing bag it's very long and the other is just a regular bag. They have some gloves and different kind of mitts and pads that are free to use. I was goofing around a little last night. My hands hurt like hell hitting those big heavy bags. I broke a few of my knuckles a year back. Every power shot I threw I really felt it. They had a very thin pair of gloves I was using. They had the big actual boxing gloves but I couldn't find a pair. Someone stole the right handed glove.

I want to get good at hitting the bag. Anyone got any pointers for a beginner? I want to teach myself. I was also throwing some kicks on the longer bag. I took karate for about 3-4 years when I was little so I know a little bit I'm not a total newb.

google or even better, look on youtube for 'heavy bag drills'.

and youtube 'how to hit the heavybag' and stuff like how to wrap your hands properly.. probably why your hands are hurting now

Yes...wrap your hands even if you're wearing gloves.  I  wrap and wear 16 oz pillows for bag work to save wear and tear on my hands.
The long bag is probably what's called a banana bag.  Great for kicking.  Kic from your hip rather than snapping your knee and try to land it on your shin instead of your foot or ankle.

Good thing about wraps is you can secure your wrist.  I have a timer .....kills to run two or three minute rounds and flip exercises every thirty seconds inside the round.  Like 1-2's on the bag with jumping jacks or bodyweight squats...do that with a bunch of different exercises and combinations and after 20 rounds or so...it's a pretty good workout

Well I'd consider myself a total beginner at boxing, regardless of the other style of training I've had (dont know how military training or very basic Pancration/kickboxing translate over to boxing), so I'd need a place to teach me everything.

I have next to NO knowledge about footwork, handspeed, proper throw teqnique, or proper boxing defense.
In a nutshell, I know nothing about boxing. The other stuff Ive dealt with basically was just "Throw punches and kicks, different ways to grapple, or find anything you can kill them with".

Yeah, but very few on this site can say they are professional boxers neither.

You're not too shabby there Mr. Che..

Makavelli, if you're truly serious, just ask Che.  The guy is a professional boxer with all the licenses and fights under his belt to boot.

Outta curiousity, where is your gym located? (Not exact address, just state if you wouldnt mind).
Im kinda looking to pick up boxing as I have done some MMA and while it was interesting, I felt like I was getting fucked in their teaching standup, which is what I wanted to learn the whole time. It was all about grappling, with almost no emphasis on standup.

If the boxing gym looks like planet fitness  and  you see chicks and old people training ,probably is a shitty boxing gym.
If the boxing gym looks like shit , smells like shit (sweat) and you mostly see  blacks  ,Mexicans and two white guys training, probably is a good boxing gym.

Mr. Knowbody i have had a preminision for a long time about becoming the world most non violent heavyweight champion destroying opponents with chest shots and arm and body shots never going for the head but still destroying opponents. I wish not to have the violent approach to fighting but more with a spritually snobbish winners attitude with the confidence i can become world champion with perfect defense and unconventional offensive tactics.

I have a bad knuckle in my right hand. The pain is actually lower in my finger not the actual knuckle. It hurts like hell every time I hit the bag with it. The left doesn't bug me so much it's my right hand. Will see how it feels in a few weeks. Did some more work on it today. Working on my kicks a little bit to. I just want to be able to handle myself a little better. Every idiot can throw a punch I want to be a little better than your average idiot.

You sound like a large child, do you have any experience with knuckle pushups? try them first atleast, could be also your weak bonedensity due to meat eating can cause this

eskimos have the highest rate of osteoperosis and they eat the most meat. go figure it out
