Clearing a hilly trail with ditch blades and machetes. I was about 15' - 20' ahead of another guy when I bent to tie my shoe, I hear this "wooosh" "ping" noise. The other guy had lost control, slipped, and thrown the machete and that was the noise, if I hadn't been tying my shoe, it would've caught me somewhere between the shoulder and mid head.
Once in the city, during a wind storm, I was about a building length ahead, when a bunch of construction material came off a high scaffold. That could've been nasty too.

I've never been addicted to anything that was harmful but I once tried my best to be an alcoholic because everyone in my Irish background (family and friends) have been very successful alcoholics so I decided to give it a try but failed miserably because after two drinks my eyes shut.
I can stretch those limits to a couple more if there is a lot of activity surrounding me, but even then my eyes shut tight.
But no matter how many shots I may have, just give me 15 minutes with my eyes shut tight and wake me up and I'm the DESIGNATED DRIVER with no complaints and could drive ya safely home no matter how far off the beaten path.

Hi Stunt.....told it many times,but left out parts because if I told you,I`d have to kill ya` !!
My main addiction was to alcohol but if any drugs materialized I considered it a bonus.
Not to say I didn`t do my share..........done just about every thing out there at one time or another.
It is great to be clean and sober all these years................... ...sometimes I wonder what I was thinking back then,but it was mostly due to my upbringing,no self-esteem, and chronic depression.

Around age 14-15, passenger in a fast car - coming down a long hilly, but straight stretch of a 2 lane road, the driver decided tp pass 6 cars. The third one decided to make a left turn. I think my buddy dropped his tranny that day.

UGLY, I do have a lot of stories to tell but I was always on the other side of the fence when it came to alcohol and drugs.
I was raised in an alcoholic family and that included aunts and uncles and close family friends and most of that bunch would be totally wasted one half hour before the meal was served.... and the meal was always burnt.
One Thanksgiving the Fire Department had to come to 'put out' the turkey and stayed for what remained of that holiday meal.
I was allowed to drink alcohol at the age of 17 but my dad always advised me to stay home and avoid going out into the traffic.
I think that early drinking age kept me from appreciating alcohol when my fellow classmates started drinking, so getting wasted wasn't new to me, so I usually ended up as the Designated Driver even though there was no such thing back in those-them days.
So my limited drinking fun was over by the time I hit the big 2-0, while others were just beginning.
But, WES, I can ALMOST GUARANTEE you that I have been to more AA meetings than yourself.
But I only went to take a good number of friends to their initial visit and from that point on, it was up to them to get there on their own.
I always wanted to stand up and say, "HI, I'm Stunt, and I'm NOT an alcoholic!" but I was informed that that would not be the proper thing to say, so I would just sit there with my mouth shut and my ass on one of those fold up metal chairs.
I gotta admit that I did meet some damn impressive people at those meetings though.... Doctors, Lawyers, CEO's , and a good number of Hollywood stars and people within that industry.
One former college professor who slept under the Santa Monica Pier and looked like he never took a bath, stood up at one such meeting and proceeded to tell the story of his life. He did such a beautiful job that it actually made me shed a tear or two.
After that meeting I went over to shake his hand and his whole persona changed as he said, "Let's grab a drink next door!".
No druggies in the family but I've been associated with a good number of them who have done themselves in at early ages, served a few years in jail, or made suicide attempts.
In fact we're working with one right now who depends on her doctor to write her prescriptions that keep her loaded.
I'm trying to get her family to investigate that doctor, but they gave up a long time ago.
Anyone know how to handle this situation? Or is it Dr/Patient confidentiality?
Lots more abou these drugged up friends stories, but as WES said above, "If I told ya, I'd have to kill ya!" .... and that's why we were advised no to write a book about stuff most of you GetBiggers enjoy talking about.

Stunt,I used to hit AA meetings and just leave after ten minutes or less.
Instead of indentifying with the people there,I compared myself to them.....big mistake on my part.
After quitting many times on my own for various time periods....sometimes minutes or years at times,I decided to really give AA all I had because I would always start back drinking no matter how long I was sober.......usually triggered by a breakup with some chick.
I went to meeting 7 days a week,twice a day, then I realized that if I missed a meeting or two,I could still stay sober.
I went for about two years...............have n`t been to any in at least 11-12 years now..........just finally got it out of my system after drinking off and on for 33 years...............most ly on.
My moment of clarity came when guys that had 30-40 years sobriety under their belts still attended 30 meetings a week..................a crutch,or another addiction......who knows ???
At least they`re still sober,but once I kicked it,I wasn`t gonna` become Bill W. bestest friend.....he already has thousands of them.
These days,I just train and that seems to keep me going......never crave a drink or drug.
If I did,I would get my ass to a meeting pronto.

Just another fucking addiction,but it is better than being a drunk,but in many ways,it`s just replacing a positive addiction for a negative one but it`s still an addiction.
My wife,dogs,jobs,hobbies,training,and friends and family really help me to stay busy.

I would go on different nights sometimes and see the same people. I cannot imagine being that fucked up in the head to where if I don't attend a meeting I will be sucking a dick for a shot of H. I got to where I just enjoyed the meetings for the stories. ;D

4 years old. Was at Niagara Falls with my folks and baby brother. They were doing something with him, and I snuck away. Things were different back then....before they knew it, they said I had climbed over a small fence, and was standing inches from the edge of the Niagara river. Had I gone in, I would have gone over the falls or drowned. For whatever reason, I just stood and watched, then hopped back over the fence when I heard them yell my name.
Like all of us, I'm sure there were many occasions where I didn't even know I was close to death/murder/kill.

I am laughing at all you guys, non of this come close to my experience, I had literally someone with world power wanting to kill, I mean all he has to do is snap his finger, very scary, worse then having a mafia boss or an illuminati after you, lived in my closet for a month, everyone he has threaten has died, I guess I am lucky, hey you would be scared too if you had gh15 threaten you. ;D

The AA meetings were the easy part; dealing with the program's 1 on 1 evaluations was where I always had problems. The recovering nut-job trying to handle your case (and your $$$) quizzing you on meetings and the 12-steps - this crazy bitch made my program a living nightmare, adding weeks of additional counseling, because she couldn't read my file to see that it had been completed already. Charging me an extra $600 to pay for said counseling THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED.
I figured out the meetings fast. Take what works, dismiss the rest, and "just stop drinking." That part was easy.

hit by an 18 wheeler hauling mulch. entire mini-van sucked under the front passenger side of the mack truck. dragged a few hundred feet. he was going 65 or 70 mph and just ran the red. all 3 of us walked away. van completely shredded and flattened.

Me and a friend were held at gunpoint for the better part of an hour...I had a friend who was managing a Television store at I45 and Little York...I stopped in a half hour before closing so we could go to dinner after he closed and watch Monty Python at his place...Some guys came in shortly before closing and held the place up,...held guns on us and tied us up in the back room,...backed a truck up to the store and started to load...after about an hour past the closing time, the district manager called the store,...This scared the robbers away,...we were tied back to back and the only way to get to the phone was for my friend to lean back while I knocked the phone off the hook...The district manager asked for my friend,...I don't know why I did what I did next, but I said, absolute quote,..."He can't come to the phone right now,...he's all tied up!"
We laughed until the cops showed up...
and I am sure that we would have been killed if the phone had not rang...
Also as a result...I am never chosen to be on a jury.

I took a speed boat to the middle of nowhere at a NY State reservoir. I found myself near the bottom of a lake because the chick I was with, who was an accomplished college swimmer, kept kicking me down with her legs. I tried to swim around her to get back up, but became disoriented and just kept going down instead of up. I could see above me, and was about 15 feet below when I just couldn't hold my breath anymore. I exhaled, took water into my mouth, but swallowed before I could breathe it (disgusting). In a panic, I tried like mad to get above water before having to take a desperate breath. I made it back up, coughing and hacking and wheezing. If that girl kept fucking with me I would have drowned, no doubt about it. Very scary and tense.

No, not really. I rarely ever street ride and when I do I'm pretty cautious. I think that probably comes from having close to 50 high speed wrecks under my belt during my racing career.
The controlled environment of the race track is much safer than any big city urban commute.

My friend and I were in Berlin about 7 months after the Wall came down, and we were told to be careful in the former East Berlin because I'm half Asian (and obviously not German) and there was a lot of anti -everything sentiment there at the time. We couldn't find any youth hostel accommodation at all, except for some run down decrepit former communist hotel in the East, so we took it. On the way there we walked past a skinhead rally - hundreds of the fuckers. Some of them looked at us but said nothing. Fast forward a few hours and we heard noise outside the window. A pretty large group of skinheads were standing and drinking in the carpark, shouting "Auslaender aus" (foreigners out). They saw my mate looking out the window, produced a pistol and started shooting at the hotel, and then we heard them trying to kick the door in downstairs.
It went on for a good 90 minutes and they managed to shoot out 3 of our windows. We had everything we could get our hands on barricaded against the door. We noticed the door was completely destroyed the next day as we were leaving, but for whatever reason they didn't come in (or if they did they didn't find us!). I honestly don't know if I was close to dying or not, but it sure as hell felt that way.

Some of you GetBiggers are amazing critters.
Difficult to explain why, but my respect for some of you GetBiggers has increased a lot after reading some of the above submissions.
I've been through a lot of shit but nothing as personally serious as some of you have described above.
Most of my "death experiences" have been a result of seeing the demise of fellow Marines under battlefield conditions.
But there is only one I really ever talk about in public and I think it's worth repeating.
We were somewhere a bit south of Hue Phu Bi and a few NCOs were standing by the LZ waiting for a helicopter to pick them up so that they could start their 7 days of well deserve liberty someplace far away from NAM.
While they were standing around shooting the shit we got hit with a couple of 122 mm rockets and one hit the very edge of the LZ causing a blast which threw them in the air and broke some rib-cages resulting in the death of one Marine if I recall correctly.
The interesting thing is that one of those Marines was a hard-body, bodybuilder who was close to the impact area and took the blast full force but managed to stand up without the need of any help, brushed himself off and started helping his buds who were still alive but in pretty bad shape.
He was the only one to get on that liberty-bird that day but he couldn't hear a thing the entire time he was on leave. But he was Superman until the day his tour was up.
There was little shrapnel damage that particular day because the impact area was soft enough to allow that 122 rocket to sink deep enough to 'absorb' it. (So the rumors go).
It was concussion which caused the damage and the story went around that he was the only one that day who was hard enough to withstand it.
But in realty it was his flack vest that kept him alive or helped to keep him not dead nor seriously damaged.

Walked in on a weapons deal a long time ago when I was hanging out with the wrong krauts - was also the moment when I packed my bags and left for good.
Had a gorilla silver back throw an pineapple at my head - it literally exploded on the wall behind me and would have taken my head clean off.
Got dragged into a drug deal with the "wrong" people, guy runs away and I wasn't fast enough buyers wanted their money which I didn't have so they "made" me look for my "buddy" with a knife on my back walking through a busy train station and nobody did a fucking thing, just in the last moment I remembered were i've seen him smoking his cocaine and low and behold he was there.

Me and a friend were held at gunpoint for the better part of an hour...I had a friend who was managing a Television store at I45 and Little York...I stopped in a half hour before closing so we could go to dinner after he closed and watch Monty Python at his place...Some guys came in shortly before closing and held the place up,...held guns on us and tied us up in the back room,...backed a truck up to the store and started to load...after about an hour past the closing time, the district manager called the store,...This scared the robbers away,...we were tied back to back and the only way to get to the phone was for my friend to lean back while I knocked the phone off the hook...The district manager asked for my friend,...I don't know why I did what I did next, but I said, absolute quote,..."He can't come to the phone right now,...he's all tied up!"
We laughed until the cops showed up...
and I am sure that we would have been killed if the phone had not rang...
Also as a result...I am never chosen to be on a jury.

1. 10 years ago my appendix became very inflammed. Had 105 fever for almost 2 days. My peripheral vision was gone... it was like looking through a telescope. Shout out to my bud Steve for driving me the emergency room. The female Korean doctor who removed my appendix was a hottie.
2. While in the process of moving to another state, my car spun-out on the turnpike after driving into a heavy snow storm. I pinballed between the center divide and guard rail a few times before it was over. I wasn't hurt, but I saw my life pass in front of me during the whole thing... all in slow motion. Thankfully it was during the wee hours and no one else was on the road at that time.

I just sunk in the water and she was on top of me and never realized I couldn't breathe... I struggled and moved but she was on me and I could not do anything about it, I swallowed a ton of water and shit started to get hazy... my dad realized what was going on and jumped in the pool very quickly and pushed the fat girl off of me.

was driving in an ice storm, which was brilliant to being with.... my truck lost traction and did a complete 360 in the middle lane....didn't touch another car or the guard rails, and straightened itself out... me and my friend just drove on and didn't say a word to each other for 5 minutes.
i had my head suck in a hole of a huge sheet of glass in an abandoned supermarket, looking inside when some genius decided to put a cinderblock through it. the glass hit the back of my neck with such force it knocked me down, and didn't leave a scratch.
i was in a '70 camaro doing about 140 when we flew off the end of Sunrise highway, we were drunk and forgot where the construction ended. the car rolled more times then i can remember and looked like a piece of tin foil, and we climbed out without a scratch...i'll never forget the first words out of my buddies mouth were..."oh fuck, my mother's vacuum was in the trunk, she's gonna kill me!!"

I took a speed boat to the middle of nowhere at a NY State reservoir. I found myself near the bottom of a lake because the chick I was with, who was an accomplished college swimmer, kept kicking me down with her legs. I tried to swim around her to get back up, but became disoriented and just kept going down instead of up. I could see above me, and was about 15 feet below when I just couldn't hold my breath anymore. I exhaled, took water into my mouth, but swallowed before I could breathe it (disgusting). In a panic, I tried like mad to get above water before having to take a desperate breath. I made it back up, coughing and hacking and wheezing. If that girl kept fucking with me I would have drowned, no doubt about it. Very scary and tense.

I forgot this one .... I hear it happens frequently but maybe not.
I was real young and scooped a spoonful of peanut butter in my mouth and swallowed it but it lodged in my throat and wouldn't go down and prevented me from breathing.
Luckily my dad was also in the kitchen and saw what was happening and grabbed some Arm and Hammer
Baking Soda from the fridge, threw it into a glass of water and made me drink it which made me puke that peanut butter up immediately.
You guys and gals with kids might want to remember this.

Was beaten up really bad once by Polish and one guy wouldn't stop kicking me in the head. I managed to get up from the ground and throw a few punches to get them off me. My face was in BITS. He even bit my face when I stood up. I had bite marks on my face and still have scars above my eyebrows.

Car accident. Passenger. Driving fast in the early spring on a road heated by the sun, in a steep downhill part of the road we entered a dark, shadowy area and it was pure ice. Car started sliding, rotating and we hit the rocks. Car was smashed in both the front and back, like an accordion ;-). A large truck approached 30 seconds later. Had we hit that, we'd all be dead.

Moderately funny "close-to-death" story that is kinda "noir-funny".
My little brother and I, like any two boys aged 5 and 2, were always scoping out for candy. That shit rules the world when you're a kid.
Anyways, our "treat" as mom always told us, everyday, was a Flintstone vitamin. We'd get one in the morning. That's about as close as we ever got to candy.
So, one day, mom comes back from the grocery store, and my bro and I know she picked up some flintstones, because we'd just run out. Sure enough, she had. She put them on the top shelf of the cupboard like she always did. But this time, we get the idea that we'll snag 'em. We rig a few chairs, climb the shelves, and grab the bottle.
Then, I get on another chair, grab a knife, and we head downstairs. Tell mom we're going to watch cartoons. She stays upstairs and is gabbing on the phone with a friend. She talks for hours on the phone, so we knew we had some time.
For what seemed like forever, my five-year old ass is downstairs on the couch working that butter knife under the child proof lid (quite ironic), until finally, I pry it off. Mysteriously, without severing a finger.
So my bro and I start munching away. The bottle had 100 flintstones or so, and we ate em all. Now, today, that would be cause for concern, but not "freakout" time. Flintstones are pretty benign these days. But back in the 70s/early 80s, they had Iron in them.
Doesn't take a nutritionist to figure out what comes next.
My bro and I hide the bottle, and go about our merry ways. Meanwhile, we've just set ourselves up for iron poisoning. Late that night, we both start puking and shitting like crazy. Mom thinks we both got the flu, which is pretty common in kids.
The next morning, things are getting worse. We're trying to eat breakfast, and mom goes looking for the flintstones to give us one. We're sick, so kinda makes sense. Except she can't find the bottle. She starts grilling us, and my brother eventually cops, tells her I ate the whole bottle. Then I turn on him, and say he ate the whole bottle. Scene ends with mom freaking out, doing 80mph to the hospital ER.
We both get booked in, sent to the poison center, both diagnosed with acute iron poisoning. Some ulceration in the stomach, and some iron leached into the system. But, it's caught about 12 hours before permanent damage sets in to the liver, and death would have ensued.
Since that day, no more flintstones in the house.
Note to parents: your kids are never safe.

It was very difficult times for me, im a very strong dude ( talking mentality), nothing ever bothered me, nothing external would ever bother me, so once i was poisoned, and everything happened to me INTERNALLY, i lost control, and was on the brink, i became my own worst enemy mentally... some tough times, they wanted to give me every anti anxiety medication under the sun, i refused it all, reads books, learned relaxation techniques, and overcame it... im talking about going from the deepest and darkest place in my life ( minimum 20 panic attacks a day and contant PTSD/anxiety), to zero panic attacks in like 18 months, and no stress, and living life happily again...
but man, all i can say is i truly dont wish that upon my worst enemy.. it made me a better person though...

some times when im free and have nothing to do ( i travel alot) , i sometimes look up support groups and shit in the area, i go there, tell them mystory, show people that there is a light at the end. because during my deepest and darkest hours, i didnt think there was a light...im not shy to tell my story ( as much as im allowed to say), so any chance i get to help, i want to do it, because i can understand how any man weaker than me might consider suicide..

Back in the early 80`s I took over 75 sleeping pills with beer and booze..............never fell asleep, just halucinated for 24 hours.
Saw peoples feet under my door when the door was flush to the floor,killed giant bugs,hands coming around my door,(it was closed),talked to my sister for hours until 5 AM............she wasn`t even in the house,choked a guy on my steps........nobody was there at all.
I had a good mind to write the company and bitch them out about selling an inferior product!! :)
