It depends a whole lot on the tester itself obviously to test the same way each and every time. But the most accurate way of testing bf is the underwater test from what I've heard. I wonder how much that thing costs...
-
The more points the more accurate. But it depends quite a bit on the tester. One needs to pinch the skin and pull it- hard. I remember reading on Lyle's forums it takes at least one hundred correct caliper tests before someone can considered experienced.

There's another method where they put you in a small pressurised chamber.

Just out of curiosity which one is supposed to be the most accurate?
-
Mirror only, doesn`t lie..........you know this anyway niko, just fucking with you! :D
-
I think they're +/- 3% or so at best for an experienced tester.
-
mirror is best ofcourse.
hey wes, yeah i know, but i still find this an interesting topic, might be valueable to some.maybe some permabulker monsters will caliper themselves and find out theyre classified as obese ;D
that is, if the caliper is big enough to be able to measure.im not joking, i dont think this thing wouldve worked on "fatpanda"
oh btw, i measured myself on a pharmacy scale where you put hands on handles, it allegedly measures height and bodyfat for about 1 british pound, and it clocked me at 33% ;D ;D
LOL :D
-
hm , a friend was measured at 3% with the underwater method, but he looks like 8% realy.
not sure if its so good after hearing that.
he is a soccr player and his club paid for it, so i dont know what it costs
I guess the important thing is to use these things as a gauge of your progress and use the same method every time. Like Wes said the mirror is probably the best since the way you look is better than some apparatus giving you random numbers.
-
wow, that can be 6% off, thats quite terrible.
however, as soon one has abs showing and lower than that, its not so hard to say anyway, and anything where theres no abs whatsoever in sight is too fat.
from say 13-18% men look pretty much the same, the calipers would be very useful in that range
I think you could give classes at a university on this subject ;D
-
not sure the accuracy, but if done consistantly and at precisely the same points; you will know if you have gained or lost bodyfat from the last test.

FUK BEAT ME TO IT WES,,,

I'm shocked no one has mentioned the classic Getbig meme about Jim Quinn. You know, how Flex Wheeler tested at "zero point zero" at Gold's shortly before the Olympia :D
-
Didn't the underwater method once say Ronnie was -1%?
-
Who cares what their bf is anyway, it's only a number. as long as you look and feel good, that's what matters.

Exactly. Why bother with that stuff? Just look in the mirror God damn it... Never understood that calorie counting either. Waste of time... ::)

agreed, just eat less and train harder

i recall Billy Smith testing Flex Wheeler at negative bodyfat, which is stupidly impossible.

Explains the retarded claims where someone has told me so and so was measured at 0% body fat.

it's like when Homer ran for mayor. he got 1% of the votes, Quigley got 100% of the votes.
and there was a one percent factor of error in accuracy!!!

Anything in life can be referenced to a simpson's episode ;D

It's not quite that bad. The +/- whatever % numbers are usually the extremes of some sort of statistical distribution, meaning it's possible but pretty unlikely to be 3% off in either direction. Most of the time it's probably off by 1 or maybe 2% with good equipment/conditions and a good tester. I don't think it's the "average" error.
Also the +/- doesn't mean it could be off by 6%, it means that the error is bi-directional (i.e. it could be too high or too low) but the measurement itself will be off by an absolute error of within 3%.
I could be off on the +/- 3% thing though, I haven't looked this up for a while.

The +- is the variance in data. You explained it well....just means that the results will be as much as 3 percentage points above or below of the actual value. Something like that...it's been a while for me too ;D
-
they are ok to test progress/degress imo, but how accurate are they on a honest self measurement?
opinions?
I like the Parillo 9 site reading. In theory, more sites means more accurate reading. But I've also read there can be a +/-5% chance for error. I use it pre contest just as an extra tool to track progress...but nothin beats the mirror bro.

Lots of athletes will say they were at 4% or 3%, sometimes 1 or 2%
I don't know what methods they're using... But they are either exaggerating or have had a misleading measurement of bf% done
These individuals may be lean, but nowhere near shredded
4% is as low as you're gonna get, and that's shredded to the max onstage amdulah aykutlu/munzer like conditioning
