Looks to me like the birds wanted to watch a good fight, so they turned the cats on each other. 

Or maybe it was a territorial fight between the birds and the cats.  Knowing that they were no match for the cats, the birds turned the cats on each other. 

Hence the thread title "Divide and Conquer."  Smart birds.    ;D
