Title: Kobe Bryant: "We'd beat the Dream Team"
Post by: Parker on July 11, 2012, 01:42:49 AM
What, Kobe thinks the current Dream team would beat the original 92 Dream Team? Arrogance...

Fuck Kobe and King Bastard Child!

Their team has streaky outside shooters.  The size of Jordan's team would clog the middle and force a game of 25 ft jump shots.  Plus Jordan would get either one of those asses in foul trouble.

Fuck Kobe and his Mexican bride of Frankenstein!

Kobe and the rag tag band of gansta wannabe clowns couldn't beat the original Dream Team at anything and against the literal force of nature that was a  young Wilt Chamberlain would wet his depends.  I come from a time when basketball was not a travelling circus and the rules were followed.

Sadly, that is no longer the case.  I hate what the game has become and no longer watch.  Not even the Olympics.   Football is heading down that sewer as well.

Every competitive athlete should think they're going to win.

And every champion athlete should shut up about it and go actually win.

Defensively, put Lebron on Jordan and Jordan would get shut down. I know its blasphamy and if you search you'll see I'm a Lebron hater, it's pure truth.  Lebron can play defense on anyone.

None of those "best defenders" was a Lebron.  Dude is on another level defensively when he wants to be. 6'8 260 Lebron would successfully nullify 6'6 220 Jordan. Jordan is still king but if Lebron guarded Jordan, Jordan aint scoring over 20. There would be nothing Jordan could do to stop Lebron despite all his 1st team defense awards. Lebrons too big to fast to strong. Lebron would score 30 or more on Jordan every night.

He was also quoted as saying he doesnt understand how Durant can be friends with Lebron , that if Kobe lost to Lebron he would be Destroying him every day at practice  ::) ::) ::)

Wait.  Lebron defended Durant who averaged over 30 points a game yet you think Jordan couldn't get 20 if Lebron guarded him?  HAHAHA.  Have you ever seen the old Detroit Pistons and how rough they were yet Jordon still scored on them.  Lebron would have cried like a school girl playing against Rodman, Dumars, Laimbeer and Thomas.  yet Jordan played like a champ.  Come on man.

Sorry but you are talking utter shit.Last year Lebron averaged 17 points in the finals being defended by a 39yr old Jason Kidd and Deshawn fucking Stepheson. The best Jordan ever got defended was by Gary Payton, who would be the best perimeter defender in todays game by a large margin, and Jordan still scored 27ppg and won finals MVP in that series.

Stop this nonsense fella. Of couse you would pick Lebrons statistacally worse year to prove your point. ::)
Yet this year, the year he won he average 29pts, 10 rbs, 8 assist.  A number not seen since Wilt...Hahaha...
As I've said, Jordan is still King but if you put Lebron on Jordan, Jordan's going night night.

BTW fellas 90% Durants points are jumpshots or free throws, not in the paint,  This is why he still scores.  Jordans points were in the paint, this is why Jordan would get shut down by Lebron.  Lebron owns the paint.

I'm not a Lebron fan I call it like it is.  I'm a San Antonio Spur fan... :'(

I LOVE this team and USA basketball playing worldwide Olympic competition absolutely pawns NBA basketball.

I think it would be a decent game but in the end I think the chemistry and sheer talent, toughness of the 1992 would overcome and they'd pull it off by 10 points or so. I would say that this current team has the better athletes though.

It's tough for alot of fans, myself included, to take the NBA game seriously today if you also watched during the 1980's and early 1990's. Those guys were in a whole another league when it came to toughness and just the way they played the game.

Your forgetting Lebron plays 4th quarter ball, Jordan played ALL for quarters ball. Also, Jordan wouldn't hesitate to take a shot, or the last shot. Lebron gets scared and hesitates. And Jordan, no matter how good the defender was, would find a way...plus, the way Jordan would set up the defenders, using head movements, dude would get so far into Lebron's head, it wouldn't be funny. Lebron plays basketball, Jordan was a student of the game. From Dean Smith on up to Phil Jackson, he had people who taught him the game.

It almost got comical there for a while. EVERYBODY in the arena and watching on television knew that Lebron needed to take the shot within the last 2 minutes or so and there were times where he would pass the ball just as soon as he received it.

Jordan was the most protected player by the refs ever. At one point of his career, you just couldn't touch him. 1993 Eastern Conference Finals was pure BS. Jordan might still have scored against the Pistons but he lost like, what, three times in the playoffs before he could beat an aging and injured riddled team.

Lebron cried his ass out of Cleveland and out of the running as the greatest ever. Jordan Prime would will the Bulls over that bullshit down in Miami, and of course, he'd take it to the hole on LeDumb.  Jordan would have him in foul trouble by the 3rd qtr and would make Wade invisible.  Pippen's assigment would be Lebron while Jordan would glove Wade.

In the same generation, there would still be Air.  I highly doubt LB23 would be in existence.

Shaq was a one dimensional player---post up, then dunk, maybe have a little 10-15 footer. That's about it.  He only played on his height and weight...but even Dennis Rodman gave him trouble.

Exactly, this "build a team around Lebron" and Lebron hesitates to take a shot? Please, he doesn't have the heart, he has the talent---but, I'll take heart and talent over Lebron's "athleticism" anyday of the week.

Lebron is what is marketed to people now---image. When you get down to his core, him vs Jordan, Jordan wants to not just beat you and the team, but he wants to humiliate you. Something Lebron can't comprehend. Most of the players today, only turn it up on the 4th quarter. Play hit and miss the first half, to guage...then about the end of the 3rd quarter start to get serious.

Lebron maybe has 4 more years where he can bring the ball to the net at will. That body is going to break down. And if his outside shot stays the same way it is today, he is going to be in trouble. Although i'm sure he will adapt, he's just not a pure shooter like Jordan is/was.

Jordan took the same shit lebron took before he won a title..."when is he going to get over the hurdle and win?"

I believe Lebron won his first title younger than Jordan. You people are doing the old "back in my day".... everything that is older is better. Jordan was the greatest player ever, and lebron COULD have the same title when he's done in 12 years.

Jordan was just as much a media creation as he was a basketball player, he was the first mega-star that had his own brand and all that shit, and the refs let him get away with murder

Jordan also refused to play on the '92 team if Isaiah thomas was on that team.

Jordan was just as much a media creation as he was a basketball player, he was the first mega-star that had his own brand and all that shit, and the refs let him get away with murder
quite true, but Nike and the media have been searching for "The Next Jordan", the only one to really fit that mold and mentality is Kobe-- Lebron is hollow market-exercise...all image. He lacks heart to me, and let's face it, Lebron was a high school phenom, Jordan wasn't. One could say he came into his own at  UNC, and that his skills developed later, or one could say, he wasn't as blessed as Lebron, but he made up for it. And let's not forget a certain U of Maryland basketballer who if he didn't die, quite possibly there wouldn't have been a Jordan.

To me, this "build a team of three pointers around Lebron", just means that Lebon can continue the same "pass the ball when things get heated".

Well, it worked out pretty good this year. they crushed the thunder, who are the young, talented team of the league.

and i hear you on the "next Jordan" shit...Jordan was like Arnold, right place, right time...perfect combination of  talent and charisma. You can't manufacture that, although Nike still keeps trying, and ruining Basketball in the process. Lebron is Lebron, he's not Jordan... but what's he supposed to say, "no"... to hundreds of millions of dollars and being treated like the second coming from the time he was 16 years old?

Defensively, put Lebron on Jordan and Jordan would get shut down. I know its blasphamy and if you search you'll see I'm a Lebron hater, it's pure truth.  Lebron can play defense on anyone.

You could say it the other way around prob more so Jordan won defensive player of the year(87-88)while still having one of his best offensive put outs.lebron hasn't won one of those yet and he's still 5 championship short to even have this conversation. Plus the way lebron limped off with 2 min left in the game this past series shows no heart, Jordan would turn into a beast take the game over and never miss the game winning shot lebron always misses.

Jordan's Hall of Fame speech is a looking glass into why there probably will never be another Jordan. The guy literally took what anyone ever said bad about him and used it to fuel his passion for the game and everything he does in life. A lot of people say they will use negativity to propel them. But very few actually stay the course. The guy simply is some sort of machine. Your classic sociopath who will never get out of his own head. I believe Tiger Woods was the same exact way before his meltdown. Jordan is and was simply awesome.

No way Kobe and the rest of today's pansies could hold a candle to the dream team.  They are legends. And while I think Lebron plays great defense especially for a superstar whom usually focus on offense, I will have to disagree with Wiggs that he could shut down MJ. Jordan would find a way to score. But yeah Kobe must be high to make a comment like that.

Charles Barkley already commented on this after tonight's espy show.

Basically called Kobe an ass clown, kobe was quoting as saying the 92 team were all old players, Barkley responded with "isn't Kobe  like 36??? (34yrs old) I was 29 and MJ was 29 as well, so kobe is the old man here, besides Kobe , James and Durrant, nobody else would even make our 92 roaster"

I'm not arguing whether the 92 or 12 team would win.  I'm saying Lebron would nullify Jordan.

I agree with the poster on page 2.... the pistons were WAY rougher on jordan than the heat were on durant.

barkley said it best - aside from kobe, lebron, and durant... I don't think any of these guys would even MAKE the 1992 team ;)

it's true.  Yes, today's team has "speed".  But the 92 guys played in a more physical league.

Hakeem Olajuwon wasn't eligible for the '92 Dream Team because he wasn't a U.S. citizen at the time.

Hakeem would out class Lebron IMO.

Ha! Jordan's points were in the paint? Ya in 1986. He was a deadly jumpshooter and always mixed up it. Shooting, driving, passing. Lebron is the one-dimensional one, he can't shoot to save his life

That's the trouble.  The "when he wants to be".  I am no basketball fan, but Jordon had that 'winner' mindset that Lebron will never have.  Barry Sanders was like that.  A friend of mine played for the Lions during that time.  He was saying that during practice, with running plays Barry would run it to the end zone.  If any other RB would do that, the coaches would go ape shit.  I actually have more respect for Jordon after watching the documentary on the Dream Team.  He was an absolute machine.

It almost got comical there for a while. EVERYBODY in the arena and watching on television knew that Lebron needed to take the shot within the last 2 minutes or so and there were times where he would pass the ball just as soon as he received it.
No aathlete has ever had the pressure that Lebron has had to win a tile! It sttarted the day he was drafted to the Cavs! Watch what happens now that he has his title!

No aathlete has ever had the pressure that Lebron has had to win a tile! It sttarted the day he was drafted to the Cavs! Watch what happens now that he has his title!

What pressure?

The pressure was to take Cleveland from the depths to the best the way Jordan did with Chicago.  He failed at that!  It's that plain and simple.

So, he won a championship with an all-star team of his generation.  Shit, when Chicago was getting kicked by LA, Boston and Detroit, Jordan should have join one of those teams, so he could get his easy ring before his time.

Even if he wins 7 rings, he didn't take a dweller to the promise land.

Oh, was it the pressure to be the first billionaire athlete, as he says?  Someone forgot to tell him Woods has been there and done that, but I guess to him Tiger isn't an athlete.

Fuck Lebron and his oddly named shoe, LB23!

Air Forever and the REAL 23!

Its reported Jordan was laughing hysterically when a reporter asked him about kobe's commnet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Michael Jordan says there's no way Kobe Bryant and this year's USA Olympic basketball team could've beaten the 1992 Dream Team.

Jordan told The Associated Press Thursday that he laughed, "I absolutely laughed" when hearing Bryant's comments that the squad training in Las Vegas could take Jordan and company.

Jordan says there was "no comparison" which team was better, adding that Byrant comparing the two teams "is not one of the smarter things he ever could have done."

Jordan spoke prior to a celebrity golf tournament in Charlotte.

He says the 1992 team, which included 11 future Hall of Famers and won its six games by an average of more than 43 points en route to capturing the gold medal, may not have been as athletic but was definitely smarter.

A few things:
1. I don't know why people say Lebron can defend all positions. He can defend 3 positions at the most (which a lot of wing players can do). Whenever he gets put on a center or power forward he gets dominated in the paint and they shoot layups over him continually.

2. Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant are far, far better basketball players then he could ever dream of being. He is all power and athleticism and that's about it. Combined with his overall size that is what makes him great right now. Pure basketball skill he is good but not even close to their level. As soon as he loses a step as he gets older, he will go downhill fast as he doesn't have the skills otherwise. Put him at their height, etc. and his pure skills would quickly be shown to be lacking.

3. Also, by going to Miami and combining with 2 other top ten players (Bosh was considered top ten before but his skills are not utilized in Miami too much) he will/should never be considered the greatest of all time. The fact that they ever lose is laughable and shows that he isn't that "great". I found it quite funny how analysts were saying that he needed more help and that the supporting cast was just not enough when they were having issues. I am sorry but if you have 3 top tier players on one team you don't particularly need a "supporting cast".

You clearly know nothing or just have a passing interest in basketball.Lebron has been to 3 finals, in the other 2 apart from the one you mentioned, he got outscored by Jason Terry in one, and Tony Parker in the other, winning a whopping 2 games total in both games combined. His series against the Spurs in the finals in 2007 he avged 22ppg on 35% fg%  :-\ The finals last year where he averaged a whopping 17ppg he lost to a team with a worse record all while obviously having homecourt. The previous 2 years he lost with homecourt advantage, all while flaking out under the pressure, practically giving up in games.

Jordan is 6 for 6 in his finals appearances, Jordan NEVER lost to a team with Homecourt advantage, meaning he never lost to a team with equal or worse record than his.Jordan was also never outscored in a playoff series by any player on his own team or the other.

Jordan has already retired, so his later years where his ppg went down some factor in to the ppg, he still has a whopping 33.45ppg avg for the playoffs, leading all time.
Lebron, whose PPG will evidently go down for the playoffs as he gets older, his avg 28.48 per game.

He's so off about them being old. Jordan was in his fucking prime! Barkley too. Kobe is the one past his prime, he's 36 I think. Jordan was maybe 28? Bird and Magic were the older guard on that team but were still a hell of a lot tougher and smarter than anyone on the current team.

I think pretty much the only one "old guy" on the sideline getting his back iced down during that time was Larry Bird but damn, if you look at the highlights even that guy was cashing pull up 3's during 2 on 1 fast breaks... had to of been absolutely demoralizing for the other team seeing those types of plays being made. That team was the best of all time and it's hard to see it being duplicated any time in the foreseeable future. 11 Hall of Famers on one squad is just unreal.

This^^^Kobe is an old man compared to the key players in the 92 team. It's so easy to spot a sociopath. Kobe just can't jump outside of his own head and look back at himself.

The dream team won by an average of 43 points per game.

Let's see what Kobe can average against these japs, brits, Cubans and Russian , I bet they struggle thru a game or two during their gold chase

You are insane... Kobe is 33.

Jordan was 28 or 29 in 92... Bird and Magic were both done... Magic had actually been retired a year.

I actually agree with Kobe... I believe the current guys could have beaten the 92 team... I don't think it would be a blowout on any level, but I think they could be the 92 team.

I mean... Of course the current team doesn't have Christian Laettner, so I'm sure that's a deciding factor.

Now in their prime... Of course this team couldn't beat those guys if they were ALL in their prime... but at their state in 92?

I think Kobe is right.

Jordan was 28-29 in 92, not 38...if he were 38, what he did after 92 would have put him beyond mythical status, it would have put him into Paul Bunyun, Peycos Bill, John Henry Status.
Plus, as is pointed out, 2012 has no real centers---
the only thing the 2012 team would have beat the 92 team would be in bruised egos.

Yeah, It was a typo... But the TEAM isn't better in 92.

Jordan was amazing at the time... no one is going to deny that, but damn... You think the rest of that team is Jordan?

They just aren't.

Of the 12 players on the Dram team, 10 would be named in 1996 to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, the NBA's official list of the 50 greatest players of the league's first 50 years

of the 12 dream team players 11 future Hall of Fame  , unfortunately Christian Laettner  didnt make the HOF

besides James, kobe , and maybe durant, their is only 3 HOF players on that roster

And let's get the ref's involved, who'd get more calls to go in his favor, Jordan or wannabe Jordan?
Jordan of course, because he Knew the game, he loved the game, the rest (today's guys) are in it for the money.

The 2012 team is new so they would definitely beat the old-ass 1992 team, except for people who were bigger fans of basketball in '92 than they are today...then the 1992 team would win.  It's so obvious that I can't believe that I have to explain it.

Lebron would hold Jordan to zero points and Kobe would make Magic look like a sluggish acromegalic.  Unless Jordan found a way to "will himself" to victory and do whatever was needed to win while Magic had too much "court sense" for Kobe to handle.  Plus "real" centers on 1992 team and "athleticism" on the 2012 team.  If you can't see this then you don't understand the game of basketball.

Dude, re-read my post dog.  I said that Jordan would "will himself to victory." Dude just KNEW how to win....that's what he did.  Magic would have too much "court vision" for Kobe to handle.  Plus the 2012 team has more athleticism....WAY more skillz and shit.  The 1992 had legit centers...those big men make a difference down low, for real.  You can't tell me Jordan ever had to deal with an ATHLETE like LeBron....6'9" 285lbs at 3% body fat and faster than a fucking wide receiver!  LeBron can shut down fools on defense too...he's just too much athlete.  Plus, Jordan didn't win 6 championships by relying on dunking.  He's NEVER afraid to take the last shot and Bird was a VERY good shooter...name one other white guy who could hang with these two teams!?

Obviously you don't take into consideration the fact that no one really cares about exhibitions.

Let's not forget that Basketball around the world is better than it was in '92 and the fact that the "Dream Team" was the first time that Pro players could be in Olympic competition, so they felt they had something to prove.

I doubt there's much to prove here.

I don't understand why everyone refuses to understand how old the Dream Team was at the time... Minus Jordan and a couple of other players, the team was really pretty old.

Remember now, they are playing by international rules.  They wouldn't be able to play that nasty Detroit Pistons Bad Boys style at all.  Also, Bird and Magic were on the verge of retirement and on the ass end of their careers.

The current team would demolish the original Dream Team by at least 20.

Skillset vs skillset, the 92 team are better. No, the game wasn't as sped up as today, but thanks to Jordan and others, today's game is fast paced. But, what happens is that the players, don't take the time to set up, think about the play---they just launch. You see too many blown plays. Bird knew the floor like the back of his hand, Magic, would know that today's players are too impatient, wanting to hurry up, playing into his hands---hurry up means "makes mistakes".
Jordan, well that's Jordan. They would control the tempo of the game, make it more defense than run and gun, thus it would be more grinding it out.
The 2012 team has athleticism---but that is moot if you are impatient, and bullheaded.

In that respect, comparing it to the current team yeah you're are right. They were def older but Jordan, Barkley, Mallone, Ewing, even Robinson were all either close or in their peaks career wise. Of course Jordan is the first player on the team you think of but Barkley was an absolute monster. He would have knocked the shit out of the young bucks playin today.

I am not disagreeing that they were all great players... Hell, anyone who would say otherwise is ridiculous.

I'm also not saying that the Dream Team couldn't beat todays team... I'm saying that todays team certainly has the ability to beat the 92 team.

Also, While I'm a Barkley fan, he was in fact, a lazy player... Jordan said his laziness was the reason he never won a ring... I can agree with that.

When Barkley was being beast, he was a beast, but he had a poor work ethic... Of course each class is going to say they can beat the other class... I think they are both right.

Neither team would just bowl over the other.

Sure 2012 could take a game in a 7 game series, but 92 frontcourt is so far ahead of 12 its ridiculous.Nigeria didnt even try, i could have scored 10 against them with the 5 feet of space they were giving on defence.

So you're saying that in a 7 game series they would go down 4 games to 1.

a single game in a 7 game series sure, a knockout game in an Olympics maybe a 1 in 10 chance, if that.

I don't think I'd agree with that, but hell, it's all conjecture anyway.

X2

This current team is far too sloppy. Give me Magic Johnson and John Stockton to run an offense over anything they have.

This current team has no real inside presence. Give me Ewing, Robinson and Malone.

And leadership?? Lol this team is a fucking joke as far as that is concerned. I'll take Jordan, Bird and Magic any day, week, or month of the year.

Again, When your only legit big man/5 spot is Tyson Chandler you are not going to beat a dream team with the inside presence of barkley, malone, robinson, and ewing!!!

I don't even follow this goofy negro sport and know Dream Team 1 had ZERO competition...They split up the Yugoslavia Team due to the war, so that Team with Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoc, and that dude that died in car accident that averaged over 20 a game in NBA, plus Dino Radja and others who were on NBA teams. Then the Russian Team who won gold in 1988 with Sabonis was torn apart after collape of Soviet Union. So they played a bunch of teams equivelent to fucking Nigeria.

Since you don't follow the sport you are admitting that you don't know what you are talking about and your entire post is garbage.

But, for argument sake, let me accept your stupid excuses. Even if those teams had not been broken up, USA would still have won the gold. Maybe the only difference is that instead of winning by an average of 43 points, it would have been 30 points.

USA wins GOLD.  They didn't bother turning it on until the 4th quarter.

HEHEHEEH!

Spain proved that this team would never defeat the Dream Team of 1992. They had a very difficult time against a team who had lost twice in these Olympic games.

This "dream team" has no presence in the middle, weak defense, sloppy play, too many turnovers and they settle for too many 3 point shots. The 1992 Dream Team would destroy this year's version. No doubt.

If that's the case, then that is another reason why the 1992 Dream Team is superior. They didn't take any quarters off.

Salley is right; people talking about how everything is fixed by the powers at be for this and that player (LeBron, Kobe,...) to win titles but exactly the same happened back then with Jordan. The guy was marketed to be a superstar and he got his ass handed to him by the not-glamorous-enough Pistons. By the time he won his first ring, he was the most protected player ever, he could do anything and Basketball had become a game for pussies. There's more contact at Jewish Orthodox weddings then in this sport thanks to him. Fuck, the Conference Finals in 93 against the Knicks was embarrassing, thank God the refs made it sure the Bulls didn't lose their title.

Complete BS, Jordan came in to the league in 84, missed practically a whole season breaking his ankle, his team fucking blew until 88 when they got Grant and Pippen as rookies. They should have won the title in 1990 but the whole team APART from Jordan decided not to show up in Game 7, with the rest of the team going something like 7-40 from the field.

The next year with the exact same Pistons lineup and Jordan finally having a more mature supporting cast they swept the Pistons in 4 games and went on to win the title, and this is with Daley still using the Jordan rules which meant they tried to force Jordan left every play and double or triple him, and were told any-time he left his feet to try to get to the rim to take him down.He dethroned the champs.

Sure Jordan shot bad in the 93 series against the Knicks, but he didnt play bad, he realised his shot was off because of a wrist injury and did other things to help his team, he came through when it mattered. The fact you bring up one series as embarrassing and only one is a testament to how good he was, he was always the best player on the floor in a series, always had the highest ppg, never lost in an nba finals, never lost to a team with equal or worse record, never lost with homecourt.

Its well known Salley has an axe to grind with Jordan, he's always making stupid comments, more than likely Jordan treated him like the scrub he was when he was at the bulls. Also Salley is trying to make himself relevant and heard in the media, and no better way to do this than say outlandish things, heres Salley saying Jordan is the best ever in another interview.

The Pistons were done by 91. An aging team. The thing in that 93 series was the refs were basically playing for the Bulls. That game 5 in NY was ridiculous, Horace Grant should have been out in about 12 minutes. He did everything but headbutt John Starks. I'm not saying Jordan was not an outstanding player, one of the best of all times but he's probably the first player (and now this has become standard) for whom they taylor-made the whole thing for him to win.

Daly admitted they threw the game.  Held MJ out, coached for a loss.

they played 36 hours later and Dream Team literally won by over 100 points once he unleashed them.
