Boston Globe To Team Romney: Sorry, No Dice

The Boston Globe will not be issuing a correction to its report on Mitt Romney’s departure from Bain Capital, according to Politico. The Romney campaign formally demanded a retraction earlier today, maintaining Romney was CEO in name only, delegating all day-to-day operations to 26 managing directors at the firm from February 1999 on.

“We received your request late this afternoon for a correction regarding this morning’s Globe story,” wrote Globe editor Martin Baron to Romney communication director Gail Gitcho. “Having carefully reviewed that request, we see no basis for publishing a correction. The Globe story was entirely accurate.”

Bain Says Romney Kept Ownership After Leaving in 1999
Last edited Thu Jul 12, 2012, 05:22 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1)

Source: Bloomberg

Mitt Romney remained the sole stockholder of Bain Capital LLC even after leaving in 1999 to run the Winter Olympics, the private-equity fund said after questions were raised about when the presumptive Republican presidential nominee departed the firm.

Bain, based in Boston, said in a statement today that it took a while to transfer ownership to Romney’s successors “due to the sudden nature” of his decision to run the Olympics in Salt Lake City. Until the ownership situation was resolved, Romney continued to be listed as the sole stockholder and in various executive positions in Securities and Exchange Commission filings, the company said.

“Mitt Romney left Bain Capital in February 1999 to run the Olympics and has had absolutely no involvement with the management or investment activities of the firm or with any of its portfolio companies since the day of his departure,” the company said.

The statement followed a Boston Globe report that he was listed as chief executive officer, among other positions, in SEC filings after he left to take over the Salt Lake City Olympic committee. The paper said documents filed with the commission through 2002 listed Romney as “sole stockholder, chairman of the board, chief executive officer and president.”

He has about a dozen gimmicks that he uses on here from time to time, even going so far as to converse with himself between them. Whork is the one he has been using most recently. You'll find many threads where he talks to himself for 3-5 pages. Sad little life he's leading but par the course for Getbig.

The problem is that it is blatantly false and a lie.

well, romney's name was on some documents showing some companies were created after he left - he was responsible as the name on the dotted line.

Now, we can agree he wasn't RUNNING them.  But saying he was completely REMOVED from the firm and had ZERO responsibility is also false.

He left bain but still had a hand in things.  Unless, of course, you believe he was stupid and naive enough to keep his name on the legal responsibility for newly created firms - long after he was gone.  This is not the case, of course.  He didn't run things, but he sure as fuck oversaw them.

Or - to be clear - if he is stupid enough to accept legal responsibility for these 5 firms and their actions (which in the SEC's eyes, he absolutely was by having his name on the line - then his judgment and understanding of the law is beyond incompetent.  He leaves but 'accidentally' leaves them power of attorney to do business in his name for 3_ years?

Derp.  Again, it's okay to admit he misled us on those last 3 years (when his duties were minimal but did exist) cause that was a dark 3 years on Bain record.  Just say "Hey, sure he didnt want to admit it and lied, but I sure still prefer him to obama".

Say that.  Don't embarass yourselves with "I do think bain was legally doing new business in his name and that he was connected in zero way at that point".

Documents: Romney didn't manage Bain funds

FORTUNE -- Mitt Romney did not manage Bain Capital's investments after leaving to run the Salt Lake City Olympic Games, according to confidential firm documents obtained by Fortune.

The timing of Romney's departure from Bain became a lightning rod earlier today, when The Boston Globe published an article suggesting that Romney remained actively involved with the firm longer than he and his campaign have claimed. The sourcing is largely SEC documents that list Romney as Bain Capital's CEO and sole shareholder through 2002 -- or three years after Romney officially left to run the Salt Lake City Olympic Games.

These claims are very similar to ones made last week by David Corn in Mother Jones, which we disputed at the time.

Now Fortune has obtained new evidence that supports Romney's version of events.

Bain Capital began circulating offering documents for its seventh private equity fund in June 2000. Those documents include several pages specifying fund management. The section begins:

Set forth below is information regarding the background of the senior private equity investment professionals of Bain Capital. Also listed are certain investment professionals responsible for the day-to-day affairs of the Brookside and Sankaty funds, which are affiliated funds of Fund VII.

It then goes on to list 18 managers of the private equity fund. Mitt Romney is not among them. Same goes for an affiliated co-investment fund, whose private placement memorandum is dated September 2000.

Then there is Bain Capital Venture Fund -- the firm's first dedicated venture capital effort -- whose private placement memorandum is dated January 2001. Romney also isn't listed among its "key investment professionals," or as part of its day-to-day operations or investment committee.

All of this could prove problematic for the Obama campaign, which has spent the day crowing over the Globe story...

he didn't "manage" the funds, he claims.

But he sure as fuck didn't sever his ties with the company.

had they decided to break X, Y, Z laws, he would have been accountable, as he was the name on the sec dotted lines.

He's smart enough not to be the fall guy for that.

So no, he didn't manage the day to day operations, but yes, his ass was still a part of Bain.  Undeniable.  And the 'bigger ticket' things, like exporting hundreds of thousands of jobs, it's hard to believe you accidentally do that without consuling with your ceo and ONLY shareholder.

Define "left".

Cause he sure as fuck didn't sever ties.  He still owned it (sole shareholder) and he still was the chief executive officer.

did he relinquish all decision making and control when he 'left', 33?

Pagliuca, a Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for Senate in 2010, told CNN: "Mitt Romney left Bain Capital in February 1999 to run the Olympics and has had absolutely no involvement with the management or investment activities of the firm or with any of its portfolio companies since the day of his departure."

In explaining the SEC documents filed in 2000 and 2001, Pagliuca said, "Due to the sudden nature of Mr. Romney's departure, he remained the sole stockholder for a time while formal ownership was being documented and transferred to the group of partners who took over management of the firm in 1999. Accordingly, Mr. Romney was reported in various capacities on SEC filings during this period."

Another Bain Democrat who did not want to be identified by name said Romney had no role after taking the Olympics post.

"Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. He was just gone. And it happened very suddenly. ... After that, he was not on calls or writing memos. He was gone."

Haha. They can't even get Democrats to toe the line on this moronic story.

Yes, because when companies are facing new taxes or regulations, they jack the cost up in order to deal w the hit they are gonig to take.
