TOM PRINCE UPDATE

A couple weeks ago, I got a surprise visit of my old friend Tom Prince at the Max Muscle store in Venice. I had not seen Tom in a really long time except maybe for a quick minute on Sundays here in there at Gold’s Gym Venice where we would cross each other quickly on our way in or out of the gym. That day, Tom was on his way back home and instead of being stuck in the LA traffic, he decided to pay me a visit so we could catch up properly. He pulled up in a beautiful new grey Mercedes and park right in front of the store. As he got out of the car, he had a big smile on his face and right away I could tell he was a happy man. Tom retired from competitive bodybuilding officially after the 2004 Ironman due to kidney failure. Since then, he has been doing dialysis treatments 3 times a week for 5 hours, from 4am to 9am to clean up and purify his blood so he could stay alive. But on Sunday, June 17th, 2012 Tom received a kidney transplant and the operation was a success. Tom does no longer require dialysis treatments and after a couple months of follow ups to make sure his body is taking the new kidney without any rejection, he will be living a normal life, he’ll be able to travel even in Europe if he wants to. Tom said “Since bodybuilding, I have been living a charmed life, I am very happy” I asked him if he missed bodybuilding and he thought about it for a minute and said, “Not so much the competing, but the relationships and the friendships I forged over the years, that’s what I miss the most” “Since I retired, I have been working everyday with my wife Rebecca and I love it. She started her own Property Management company and today we manage 82 buildings. It’s crazy, I never thought I would find something I would enjoy doing more than bodybuilding but I have to say that this was a very smooth transition for me, I never skipped a beat. I am also happy that after years of being my rock and supporting what I wanted to do, today, I get to do the same for Becca and support her business and be her rock, it’s great!” Well it looks like life after bodybuilding isn’t so bad Tommy. Congrats on all your good fortune, we are truly happy for you.

Tom used to be quite the douche, on the internet. More so that most of you know. Not many pros who have posted over the years actually deserved vitriol, Tom was one of them (in my opinion). Some may read that as being par for the course, consider the way people are, here - but we're talking about over at MM, which was extremely policed - often, by the man, himself.
But, having been around at that time, actually witnessing him being a dick, I still say, the guy has made the best he can from the cards he's dealt himself. Of course he looks like a scarecrow, he's been on dialysis for 8 years and he's actually had the guts to stay away from the bodybuilding world ::). Think of all the leeches, currently still trying to hold onto their former drug addict lives. Think of the train wreck who still comes to this board posting his all capitals, foolishness. Reality won against Tom, but at least he admitted it and has moved on. He set a good example. I won't bag him.
I'm sure Luke Wood would have been the same, but sadly, that was not meant to be (and Luke was never a douche, he was a top fellow).

Wouldn't there be other people first in line to get a kidney transplant? After all, bodybuilders choose to destroy their own kidneys by abusing diuretics etc. Very strange that he was eligible for such a transplant.

Unfortunately the majority of human ailments, 70-80%, are self inflicted and preventable. Bad eating habits, alcohol, drugs, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle etc., all contribute to health problems which could have been otherwise avoided. Who's to say a person who injects themselves with various steroids should be any less eligible for a transplant than an alcoholic?

Good for him. It's cool of him to stop by for a photo-op despite his busy schedule. He probably earns over $250,000 a year! I bet he's on that phone making deals ALL the time...especially when he meets friends for lunch or dinner. That's great news. He's probably wanted to stop by for a pic with his nice clothes, freshly-washed Mercedes and frequently-in-use cell phone since FOREVER but just hasn't had time because he's so happy and busy and wears a button-down shirt without a tie (unless he's in a meeting).
I know guys like that at the tall building with the parking structure downtown. Those guys are always talking business on their phones without a tie and they drive used Audis or Mercedes with a navigation DVD that they can put in the CD player. Glad to see Tom doing so well. He's come a long way from veining coke and 'bain in that big ass left (and ONLY in the left arm) arm vein before he could even leave Kendell's apartment in Colorado. I always knew he'd be driving a car that needed new breaks every 10,000 miles some day...so cool to see him happy and talking on the phone in pictures.

The way i saw it, at the end when he was melting and saying... "i couldn't be under 250 if I wanted to !!".....is that he was flipping the fuck out and realizing he that he was seriously fucked, and he didn't handle it so well. anger, denial..typical emotions when you undergo something that life-changing. can't blame the guy for blowing a gasket. His whole world was being taken away from him
I thought he was underrated, and one of the best white BBers of his time. he was as fucking thick as a gigantic veiny penis, and had good lines.
Good to see him doing well. and who cares if he was a drug addict. we have thread after thread here where half the members talk about the drugs they have used.

Managing 82 empty, foreclosed properties so they don't get vandalized from a leased car = not exactly living the dream.
I've been somewhat fortunate/lucky in business dealings and as a result, have been able to purchase some nice vehicles. Not a week goes by where someone doesn't ask, or offer money, use borrow the cars to pretend they're theirs. I've been offered as much as $5k to "rent" a car for a two day high school reunion.
