Question:

What causes urine to smell like formaldehyde?
It has been like this for approx 2 weeks.
Should I have something checked?

Dear Antoinette,
The ingestion of methanol, also known as methyl alcohol or wood alcohol may cause urine to smell like formaldehyde.
Taking creatine supplements may cause urine to smell like formaldehyde.

Bacterial infection is a common cause of a mixture of amonia and formaldehyde smell in urine.
Infections of the urinary tract are considerably more common in women with over half of all women experiencing at least one urinary tract infection during their lifetime.
Sometimes a strong urine smell can be caused by medications, vitamins or nutritional supplements, or even something you've eaten.
Asparagus is notorious for causing a disagreeable urine odor.
Certain compounds in asparagus are metabolized giving urine a distinctive smell due to various sulfur-containing degradation products, including various thiols, thioesters, and ammonia.
