Title: Favorite Sub-compact?
Post by: Voice of Doom on July 27, 2012, 05:49:50 PM
I'm comparing 9mm for CCW:
S&W M&P Shield, Sig p290, Kimber Solo, Kahr pm9,  Ruger LC9 (in that order).  Not looking at Glocks.
Thoughts?  Experiences?

This is bodybuilding related because...I like to work out and shoot.   ;D

I'd go with a Kimber 1911 or a Sig P226 Navy, but then again, Im not big on Sub-compacts.

This is something for the wife.  She won't carry it unless it's small and light.  And uncarryed weapon is a useless weapon.

I like the Smith and Wesson model 36, small and very easy to handle. I have seen some women not gel to well with automatics, the revolver makes things a lot less complicated for them. Thats important because women are half retarded to start with.

While I prefer Smith & Wesson, I have heard of some small issues with the Shield lately.  Check out the Springfield XD subcompact.  Very nice shooter in 9mm.

I'm definitely getting a Kimber 1911 when I'm back from Germany. I've heard only good things about Kimber.

S & W shield: I would stay away from. They have never been know for making decent semi auto handguns. Their revolvers are great. One good point is that they rarely jam but the accuracy is not good compared to others.

Sig P290 I assume is their little 380 that's works like a Colt 45. Sig makes quality firearms. If you are comfortable and have training to carry cocked and locked it's a good choice. It's not for the casual user.

Kimber is over rated. The finish on their guns tells you all about their quality control. My friend had a compact .45 that would jam every magazine. Sent it back and it still jammed.

Kahr is an excellent firearm. Really light and accurate. When they first came out they were a little tricky to take apart. I don't know if that has been addressed in current models.

Ruger: Has a horrible trigger. If you have any experience shooting you know a bad trigger makes a gun hard to shoot accurately.

The
The M&P line are the best handguns i have ever seen. Love them. If you are only buying one, get the M&P. The shield is single stack tho, look in the sub-compact version before buying. Some prefer more ammo vs concealability.
I used a sub-compact XD for CC because i like the grip safety. (I bought the M&P before you could get one with a thumb safety.) It doesn't compare to the M&P tho.

go with a revolver then. Low to no maintenence and high reliability.

Have you ever read a bad review from a major gun magazine writer? I haven't.  Pick up any gun magazine and read what they have to say about any gun. Always fantastic reviews.  I have sold many guns because I brought them on glowing reviews to find out they are junk. I only give opinions on guns I have shot or owned.

The J frame Smith revolvers are outstanding. I have carried one for 29 years. They are really accurate for a little gun. Major problem is the tiny sights. If you have excellent vision it's a good choice. As I age it's tough to pick up the sights in poor lighting conditions. Many will argue most shooting distances are pointing distances not aiming but I want to aim unless it's 5 yards.

Kimber's quality has gone way down in recent years.

A lot of better 1911s out there than Kimber.

i.e. Colt & Springfield Armory

Exactly.

I've owned a few guns in recent years that i bought because of marketing & biased gun reviews. But the novelty of a new gun wears off quick when it jams up all the time.

There are plenty of tried & true firearms out there that have been produced for decades that IMO supersede any innovations made recently.

Shotguns: nothing beats Remington 870 or Mossberg 500
Single bolt rifle: Remington 700 all day
1911s: Colt & Springfield
Semi rifles: Have an AR-15 built from ground up that's made with decent parts

Bottom line is that a gun has to go boom whenever you squeeze the trigger out of the box with off the shelf ammo for me to be a fan. But there are plenty of cleverly marketed guns out there that fail this basic criteria ...but they look cool!

I personally don't own one but few shooting buddies of mine have them.

They're built with quality parts, tough as shit & accurately go boom each & every time.

Remington 870 is a tried and true gun. Many copies of the AR 15 are outstanding. Remington 700 is outstanding but all that talk about the trigger problems are scary. Massive law suits about that. Colt and Springfield are safe bets in 1911's.

Love that firearm.

As far as someone saying Kimber is junk, the few I've fired have been exceptional.
The USMC has gone to Kimber 1911's for their Force Recon and MARSOC teams.

I'd go with the sig personally. I can vouch for the trigger on a ruger also as I have a sr22. This is the first ruger pistol I've owned and I have no complaints besides the trigger.

Great feedback!
I ended up getting a sweet deal on a new Kahr cw9.  The wife is comfortable with autos...she also has a Glock23...but it's too large for CCW.  She likes the size and feel of the Kahr as do I.  I threw in an extra 10oz silver bar to the seller and got a Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special DAO in the package for myself!  I'm pumped to fire that hand cannon.

One stop got both of our CCWs.  Will take them out to the range tomorrow.   ;D

Kimber isn't junk...it's not as good as of the past few years.

New models have feeding & ejecting issues.

With a little gun smithing they can be made flawless.

My point is there are many models of firearms that are decades old that out if the box will go boom with every trigger pull with off the shelf ammo. The firearms market is like any other Where fads happen & it seems like marketing takes place of quality & reliability. This can be seen with the new " zombie " branding on all firearms & "tacti-cool" fads.

Don't fall into fads & go with the proven brands/models!

When you are 6'6 and 350 lbs with abs, the Desert Eagle becomes a sub-compact.
