Title: Race that shook the world
Post by: crownshep on August 01, 2012, 11:14:50 AM
Brilliant documentary about the 1988 Olympics 100m race, especially the bit about positive tests in 1984 being "lost" and the introduction of GH that year.

Called the dirtiest race in history. And, if memory serves, six out of the eight tested positive.

Even though its nearly an hour long its well worth a watch, you find out the chief doctor doing the testing talking about how GH came into the sport and everyone started wearing braces on there teeth. Then you notice Lewis wearing Braces.Plus the same Doc saying that he kept all the samples from 84 and tested them with todays equipment and all of them tested positive. You find out Lewis tested positive before 88 but was let off and allowed to race and the jamaican in the race was caught in 2010 supplying drugs to the athletes he coached.

While Kevin did get beat, that's impressive for someone of his size and training background. Also, that sprinters quads are no joke either, goes to show the type of training that goes into it.

So was his time faster than usain bolt?

His time was 9.79 s which was not bettered until Tim Montgomery ran a 9.78 a little over 14 years later, which is an amazingly long stretch for a sprint record.  Montgomery's record was later disqualified because he was a juicer too (as if they all aren't, haha).  It wasn't until 2005 that someone beat Johnson's 1988 time and wasn't caught for using PED (or hasn't been yet; Asafa Powell).

Johnson's time in 1987 when he first set the record was 9.83 s, which beat the existing world record by 0.10 s.  That's an incredible margin in a race that short.  It was almost the same margin as what Bolt did with his 9.58, although he was beating his own existing record.  In the course of a year Bolt improved the record by 0.16 s and if anyone approaches that for the next 15 years or so I'd be stunned.

Phelps supposedly signed up for extra drug testing in 2008 and passed like nine tests during the Olympics.  Maybe the tests are better this year so he lowered the dosage.

Carl got caught for using stimulants or something (or maybe it was some sort of masking agent) but nothing ever came of it.

He also never got any big endorsement deals because people thought he was a homosexual.

carl got done for pseudo ephedrine, so did christie.

GH is tested for now, using biological passports, in fact this year, some athletes got banned for last years world champs due to HGH indications.

Ben wasnt using the best drugs, he was stupid and got done for using them up to and during the comp.

Anyone who knows can go through these athlete's progression and decide for themselves who was taking stuff and who wasnt.

Carl improved only a tenth of a second in a career of over 10 years at the top. Ben suddenly got much better after being an also ran, and improved from 10.2 to 9.8 in a  span of about 3 years...

Flo Jo went from an 11.1 runner to a 10.5 runner in under 2 years...at a mature age too.

It was hardly the dirtiest race ever...the 1960s and 1970s and early 1980s were just full of doping athletes. and they took whatever they wanted.

I sort of agree (assuming you're implying Lewis wasn't using PED).  He was a phenom at a young age and never really improved by big leaps, just steadily got a little better and maintained that for a while.  He was dominant in the long jump though well into his 30s against younger athletes who were all probably using drugs, which makes me think he probably used a little something to extend his career that long.

He was caught for using some banned stimulant though.  Not really on the same level as equipose or whatever Johnson was on (although maybe Carl's stuff was some masking agent, I don't know anything about that kind of thing).

When we all heard him say that on TV, we looked at each other. . . fell on the floor. . . and rolled around laughing for hours.

Carl Lewis doped too.

Get over it.

What is indeed telling, and is something anyone seldom hears about, is that diuretics turn samples into "water".

Who would've fucking thought! (At least back in the 80s).

This goes to show that any one-balled schmuck with a ¼ genetic advantage can become a phenom, provided he's got a "guru" who knows how to turn urine samples into "water" (this later sentence proves to me that the anti-doping agencies aren't neutral).

Is it me or... being a non-African American, hasn't Carl always sounded like The House Negro pointing the finger at the (and more genetically gifted field) darker folk? Just sayin...

That surprised me as well,i mean,i know diuretics are used to excrete water,so i`m thinking by taking them before urinating for the test meant mainly water was just excreted.

Wasn't there an interview in Bigger, Stronger, Faster with a former drug tester who claimed that Lewis had teasted positive just prior to the 1984 Olympics? They let him off because of the national shame it would have brought to the host country or something like that.

I'd like to know what Michael Johnson was on. No guy can run that fast naturally with such an unnatural stride and take so much off a 200m record which had stood since 1979.

Ya Lewis deserves to go to the deepest depths of Hell for eternity. He was doing everything Ben was doing but was paying people off. Look at his little schmo trainer in the documentary. Guy looks like he was some kind of horse racing jockey or something. Those guys know drugs and diuretics. Lewis wearing braces was pretty funny.

They weren't gonna bring her down. She was the female Carl Lewis. She was protected. The only reason Ben was brought down is because Carl's people payed large sums of money to make sure they didn't look the other way with Ben sample. If you really believe Flo Jo was clean then I bet you also believe G4p doesn't exist in bodybuilding. Come on dude. And Jones got brought down because they couldn't hide it anymore. Too many people were coming forward. Jose Canseco's book really got the ball moving.

Dude she had better times than a lot of men sprinters who were juiced to the gills. And guess what, that 16 year old Chinese girl swimmer who had faster times than the Olympic men is doing some shit we haven't even heard of yet. Flo Jo was cool as shit though. And your right, she doesn't really belong in a thread with the douchbag Carl Lewis.
