Title: Do you know a WWII Vet?
Post by: Princess L on August 01, 2012, 07:59:48 PM
My husband will be escorting this fall, our friend and neighbor who served.  I wish I could go, but space is very limited.  I returned home last year from a trip at the same time an honor flight was coming in and the crowd at the airport to welcome them home was absolutely incredible.  Very moving.  If you know of anyone who should take advantage of this opportunity, please encourage them to get their application in.  The cost to escort a vet is $500.

See links:

Time is of the Essence

Based on recent 2011 statistics, we are losing World War II veterans at the rate of approximately 900 per day. Honor Flight Network will continue do whatever it takes to fulfill the dreams of our veterans and help our heroes travel absolutely free.

Subsequent to the World War II veterans, our efforts will then focus on our Korean War and then Vietnam War veterans, honoring them similarly. (Note: Some hubs are now accepting applications from Korean and Vietnam Veterans. Please contact your local hub to see if they are accepting these applications.)
http://www.honorflight.org/about/
Honor Flight Network will also pay tribute to America's other heroes who served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, followed by veterans of more current wars. They, too, have given so much and it's time we show them that their efforts are not forgotten. Honor Flight Network has learned a lot over these last four years and one point that stands out is that our veteran heroes aren't asking for recognition. It is our position that they deserve it. Our program is just a small token of our appreciation for those that gave so much.

"There's a real sense of urgency,"  "We've got 900 World War II veterans nationally that die every single day... these guys are in their late 80's and 90's.

I had a great uncle that was  a pilot in the RAF, but he`s been dead 14 years.

It`s been 66 years since the war, so the youngest vet is like 83, most are much closer to 90, it`s dam sad the people that have defined the modern western world are almost all gone.

It seems like the VFWs were filled with these guys still raising hell, drinking beer and telling amazing stories back when I was a kid in the 80's.

Now they are passing away at such a prodigious rate. Father time...he never lets up.

My grandpa died in 08.  He was a hell of a guy, went to almost every country in Europe except Luxemburg and Scandanavia.  Great uncle was on a boat in the Pacific, he's still living.  Healthy as hell

Yes, it's a day trip to D.C.  They leave in the morning and return in the evening.

If you feel moved to help out, I'm sure your local chapter could use volunteers.

It is free for vets (all donations).  The chaperone/escort is $500.

Personally, I think that a lot of people would do it just for the honor, but the $500 thing will prevent/detract a lot more from participating.  Before you think this is anti-vet, my late father was a vet of korean war, my brother is retired AF, my late uncle was on one of the more famous battleships of WW2 (I will be damned if I can recall which right now).

A former neighbor, who died a couple of years ago, was in the 101st Airbourne during WWII. Lot of combat action and was in the Battle of the Bulge. First time he ever saw snow was then  (SoCal native). Liked it at first, hated it later. Really cool guy to talk to, though never about what he did in the war.

His grand son joined the 101st Airbourne (Fort Campbel,Ky)l and was killed in the first gulf war. The reason I use 101 after the JPM...giving due respect to a childhood friend.

It is on that day that i realized we must deal with the jewish menace.

My grandfather turned 91 only last week. He fought in India, Australia, and the South Pacific during WWII. He also worked as a codebreaker and used to use these old Enigma machines. He's told me loads of stories and showed me loads of old photos about the war which as a kid I used to find incredibly boring because I was too naive to know what it was all about but now as an adult I find fascinating.

Bodybuilding related because I've seen a photo of him in 1941 with his top off and he had a decent six-pack and shoulder-to-waist ratio for those times.

"Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America's veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill."

"Sadly, despite our best attempts at fundraising, Honor Flight Network Network receives no national, government sponsorship. Our funding comes primarily from individuals across the country who recognize the great accomplishments and sacrifices of veterans and want them to see their memorial before it's too late. Other significant contributors have been fraternal organizations like local American Legion, VFW, Am Vets, DAV, MOPH, posts and chapters, as well as various corporations on a local level. "

Honor Flight would not be successful without the generous support of our guardians. Guardians play a significant role on every trip, ensuring that every veteran has a safe and memorable experience. Duties include physically assisting the veteran at the airport, during the flight and at the memorials. Guardians are also responsible for their own expenses (airline fare, etc.) For further information, please contact us at 937.521.2400 or http://www.honorflight.org. Thank You for your support.

The more I dig into this, the more I'm thinking my husband won't be going along.  Although our friend is in his 90's, he's healthy as can be and doesn't need any assistance.  Dude walks 5 miles everyday, rain or shine,  still drives, still maintains his 36 acre property.  He quit hunting years ago, but still kills any undesirable critter he (or we) catch (raccoons, opossums, skunks, etc).  His wife gets pissed at him when he and I polish off a bottle of wine  ;D

Do the Guardians have to pay $500 AND their own air fare and expenses?  WTF?

It's very easy to be a non profit organization.  All the shareholders have to do is set up a service contract and take the surplus revenue as a fee and BINGO   no profit.

Very Noble I dont think.  Most "Charities" rip the arse out the income. The Vets are a front to line the owners pockets.  Non profit of course. ::) ::)

No.  I believe it's a flat fee to simplify things.  I have no problem with the $500 although after reading the websites, I'm a little confused as to the difference between a volunteer and a guardian.  It looks like guardians go on the flights and volunteers are stationed at the airports for departures and returns.  The guardians don't appear to be assigned to a specific vet, but rather to be overall assistance to any vet on the trips who need assistance with anything ~ wheelchairs, walkers, oxygen, medications, etc.  I'm waiting to hear back from headquarters to clarify things.  It appears there is one "guardian" per 8 vets going on each trip.  I think both hubby & I will sign up to be both volunteers and guardians.  That way at least one of us at least should get selected for something.  Apparently, preferential selection goes to military personnel and those with medical training for the flights.

its always about the $$     Military men are “dumb, stupid animals to be used” as pawns for foreign policy.

Henry Kissinger,
National Security Advisor to Nixon, 1973.
(War Criminal, Freemason, Zionist, White House Advisor during the Iraq and Afghan wars).

The quote is found in “Final Days,” a book by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Kissinger has never disputed it.

He wouldn't do it. He's a different kind of man. He doesn't really talk about the wars and he has had no desire to relive any part of them (his own words). Going so far as to change the channel any time a serious war movie is on.

We took a trip to DC when I was a kid and visited all the Smithsonians and Memorials, it was fun. But he never really seemed to be one of those guys that got anything out of the memorial.
Then again, he never really showed much emotion, period, that I can remember.

...omly thing he ever said was that the best friend he made over there died in his arms.

My husband will be going this weekend with our friend/neighbor on an Honor Flight.  110 WW2 vets will be on this flight.  There are still hundreds more wait listed to go.   Fortunately, enough money has been raised to send 2 more charter flights in November.
