I must say, "The 9th company"

Movie is about USSR's war in Afghanistan.
Very good and touching film about men who sacrificed so much for peace and justice.

City of God

Le Cercle Rouge is a top notch old crime crime along with Le Samurai.

Takeshi Kitano has some great ones with my favorites being Hana Bi and Kikujiro being my favorites. Outrage and Brother are a good start if you're just getting into them and you want a lighter film.

Un Prophete is a great French Arab crime film.

Most productions from Pedro Almodovar

"The Skin I Live In" was extremely well written, directed and filmed. Not as shocking as the media attention could lead one to believe but the surprise was how well it was crafted. I'll definitely watch more of Pedro Almodovar's work.

Just like most Southern European films, the conversations go very deep and fast, esp when you don't speak Spanish, LOL
Make sure you see his productions with Penelope Cruz like Volver, she's like heaven...

"La Haine" (meaning "hate") - great French film which came out in the mid-90's.

It involves a cop-hating Jew, an afro-caribbean former boxing gym owner, and an arab.

Basically something there for every Getbigger.

As long as this has been brought back up to the top, add me to the folks recommending the Pusher films. I've heard about them for years, but honestly didn't expect much, but they're very good. The second and third films are very strong, with the third being the best of the batch. If you watch them close together, it feels like you're watching a good mini series.

I'd also recommend a British film called Shifty, similar feel to it.

Un Prophete .... A GREAT foreign film.

Definitely gonna watch for The 9th Company and The Pusher.  THANKS!

Have not heard of either of those before.

I think I have seen more movies than WES even though he got his first payroll check from the Biograph Company while working with D.W. Griffith.

But I gotta admit that I know less about movies than Dr Chimp whose best Hollywood pal was some guy he nicknamed "Cecil B".

But to be perfectly honest I did prevent an OSCAR from being used as a murder weapon once.

While I held that heavy little critter in my hands ....  I delivered an impromptu  acceptance speech  to no one while two Hollywood personalities battled it out in the living room.

When the battle was done, the OSCAR was replaced on the mantle and we all departed peacefully .... Much quieter than when we initially entered.

In my humble opinion the best foreign movies are superior to the best Hollywood productions although that statement can be argued in either direction.

So many! Putting aside, as others have suggested, Bergman, Fellini, and Kurosawa:

Le retour de Martin Guerre

Jean de Florette

Manon de sources

Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes

Fitzcarraldo

Andrei Rublev

Stalker

Seen  Herzog's "Aguirre: The Wrath of God" and "Fitzcarraldo", not that familiar with Andrey Tarkovskiy or Claude Berri but will check some of their stuff out.

Awesome! I love Herzog, and I hope you like Berri and Tarkovsky:

"It is perfectly clear that the goal for all art—unless of course it is aimed at the ‘consumer’, like a saleable commodity—is to explain to the artist himself and to those around him what man lives for, what is the meaning of his existence. To explain to people the reason for their appearance on this planet; or if not to explain, at least to pose the question." (Tarkovsky, Sculpting in Time; my italics)

Volver is on my Netflix queue. Is saw "Tie Me Up Tie Me Down" yesterday. There seems to be a theme, at least between "Tie Me Up Tie Me Down" (very well done as well) and "The Skin I Live In".

Almodóvar, from what I've seen so far, is very Hitchcock-like, especially "The Skin I Live In". It will be interesting to see more starting with Penelope in "Volver".
